Report the real stories about city candidates

Outrageous! Why is it front-page news that a candidate has the biggest coffers? Why is it front-page news that a candidate has loaned herself money? Why do you highlight candidates who have spent the most money to date? The News & Record is giving candidates free press for the wrong reasons — name recognition, fat campaign chests, or not voting for recall.

I worked for campaign finance reform, and I was in Washington in 2002 with "Granny D" to meet with congressional representatives and encourage them to support the Shays-Meehan bill. It passed. We need to recognize that campaigning is about far more than money; it is about the quality and character and leadership of the candidates.

I submitted a post to Allen Johnson's blog applauding the News & Record for expanding election coverage. Please honor that pledge. It's about time the News & Record gave press to the new faces, the qualifications and experience candidates bring, the debate over issues that matter to Greensboro, and the real reasons people are seeking office. We need City Council members who, regardless of campaign coffers, have the skill and leadership to move Greensboro forward.

Complaints abound that mirror your characterizations of the N&R council campaign coverage, Donna.

On your web site*, you promised to start a blog if you are elected? Why wait? You can start a conversation now with voters that doesn't depend on the misguided traditional media.

I have written and ranted on this subject many times. Politics is power! GOD-like power. There are so many politicians holding elected office that maintain very selfish agendas. So, it takes a lot of money to purchase that kind of power. Money buys admiration, popularity, great notice, and the ability to almost get away with behavior that the average and ordinary could never do.
All politicians makes promises of "milk and honey" if they are elected. Then, in their sneaky way, they weave their own financial gain plan. They always have their own special team of stooges that cover and hide the truth of what they are really doing.
Look at how many city, county, state and federal politicians are finally getting caught in their financial and sexual gain games in the past several years. That's just a slight amount of what truly goes on. From federal Senate seats to local council people to county Sheriffs, the greed of self promotion, selfish financial agendas, and exploding mean-ass egos is raging in the world of politics.
And, to get in the game, it takes cash. Gobs and gobs of cash. And, the more cash a politician garners, the higher on the heroic scale they climb. Bragging rights, so to speak.
When I think of what a lot of that cash that the Presidential candidates raise could do for average Americans caught in the financial crunch going on today. It pisses me off! Good average, salt of the Earth Americans who's only fault in life was work hard and honestly for all they had. And, then loose it all because the politicians in power could note harness their power egos in check. They set in place the systems that rob the average true American and then pay themselves more in salaries, benefits and perks.
If I could tell Barak, Hillery, Mitt, and all those other ego exploding Presidential wannabees what to do with those hundreds of millions they are grabbing to pursue their selfish power plays. I would tell them, help some honest Americans loosing their homes. Help honest elderly Americans get the medicines they need so badly. Help American students get the quality education they deserve. Boy, have I got a long list of American needs. But, it would never, ever penetrate the ego shell of the ones who should get the message. Now, that I've really pissed myself off with this going nowhere rant, the Dog's outa here.

If you live in District 3, watch out for Zack Matheny. He sooooo wants to be important and has an ego the size of Texas and will be Jim Melvin's puppet on the City Council. Melvin has helped bankroll Matheney's campaign and is hoping to put yet another one of his shills in power.

As an alternative, I have no idea yet. But for now, just know that you don't need to "Back Zack"! Unless you think Jim Melvin is God's Gift To The World!
