Frivolous use of "God" offends people of faith

It is written in the Ten Commandments that we should not use God's name in vain. I would ask that people not exclaim "Oh my God" when surprised or frustrated by something.

The expression "Oh my God" was never heard very much in our popular culture throughout the 1970s, '80s and '90s, but within the last few years it has become very common. This use of God's name is very offensive to people of faith and people who seek spiritual understanding. To me it is no different from saying "GD."

God's name, and the concept of God that its use gives voice to, should not be used in such a frivolous manner. Many people who say "Oh my God" out of habit may say that they are not "religious." That's fine. Why don't they think up something of their own to swear with instead of using a word that has such serious connotations to so many of us?

The concept of God should not be disrespected. The common use of "Oh my God" is another example of how coarse popular culture has become in the last decade or two.

I would suggest "Good grief" or "Oh my goodness" or silence.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. .. OH MY GOD that is so GD right! What the Hell are all these people thinking?

At least we're not drawing images of Mohammed - we've kept that sacred, and there is nothing like a likeness of Allah, originator of the heavens and the earth." Wait .. maybe was that God? I get confused some times, especially when IM'd in the middle of a face-book thought.

I think Jesus looks handsome - least in all the photo's I've ever seen, like around Church and such. Doesn't he ... and never married? Something's wrong there, don't you think? Of course he needs a hair cut, but heck He was so busy saving people and all that.

Now Moses ... the spitting image of Charlton Heston.

Good grief and oh my goodness do not mean the same thing as oh my God to me. While I usually associate a negative thought, ie frustration, with the first two terms, I think of the offensive term as meaning surprised to the point of being unable to think of any other words to express one's surprise.

Steve, I hope your expression of a pet peeve in print helps as it is doubtful people will stop using the term. Personally I think you have a very blessed life if this minor habit of others bothers you so much.

JDR, there are now those of faith who think that Jesus may have been married...and to, of all people...MARY MAGDELINE!

Yvonne, I think if the minor habit of others bothers Steve, he really needs to get a life, either that or get his head out of his a$$ and look around at the REAL world!

funny how many people who don't believe in God use that expression. the expression is actually laying claim to God. i.e. oh "my" God - when accordding to them, in actuality He is not " their " God at all. (maybe they should change it to ' oh your God ')...............
i understand what the ltte is alluding to though. when we invoke Gods name it should be done with reverence and fear (imo). i also think the ltte writer must live a blessed life if this is their major life annoyance.

Hey, Steve Patton...How about everyone replace the statement you hate with OH S--T, or F--K IT! They work, don't they? Wow, I hope it don't get kicked off this gossip line for this post! Steve, you need to let us know what you wear everyday, so all of us can dress just like you. Then, we'll all be the same! Dad-gum, can I get any sillier? This world has a lot of problems, but an expression with words is not one of them. The Dog's outa here.

What? It wasn't? Like, omigod! I am sooooo sure! Like, that is so totally wrong!

Ok, sorry. I was a teenager in the 80's, and many of my classmates decided that they should speak valley girl. Omigod was a very popular expression...it was definitely common in the 80's.

You know, my 70 year old aunt, who is a nun and has lived in a convent for 50 years says Oh my God on occasion. And I have heard some priests who could put sailors to shame!

I've rarely heard anyone use a possessive pronoun alongside someone's name. "Oh, my Steve!" "Oh, my Lisa!" "Oh, my John!"?

I don't think they're taking God's name in vain. They may be referring to Him as their own personal deity, but I don't think that was ever prohibited.

"Oh, my Jesus!" might be different. "Oh, my Yahweh"?

"Holy shit" works for me, except around the kids. I guess that term would be considered blasphemous as well.
