Facts about water supply will promote conservation

We have been fortunate to receive some rain recently, but the drought continues in the Piedmont and throughout the state. Gov. Easley was quoted saying he runs the shower for only 26 seconds in order to conserve water. WUNC-FM recently said that Durham has only 50 days of water remaining.

What is the status in Greensboro? It's really difficult to find out how soon we will run out of water. My question is why we're not hearing more about this in order to keep awareness high.

Water restrictions are nice, but many people would do more to conserve water usage if they knew the facts.

The News & Record should print the number of days of water remaining at the top of the first section of the newspaper each day, in the weather forecast page at the back of the local station, and on the home page of its Web site. Local TV channels should mention this during their weather forecasts. This attention would, I think, help reduce water consumption further.

Constant headlines of : "LESS THAN 90 DAYS OF WATER LEFT FOR GREENSBORO" are frowned upon by the Economic development and city government folks.

Who in their right mind would consider relocating to Greensboro if they knew the true depth of the crisis?

Glad others have noticed that the Greensboro water situation has become "back page news" instead of being kept front and center to keep awareness high. If people aren't constantly reminded, they forget! Constant headlines such as Hugh has mentioned or perhaps a daily countdown warning people that "Mandatory water restrictions will begin in ____ days if water use isn't decreased." need to be on the front page each day and in every local television newscast.

Bunny and Hugh .. how can you say that?

This is a Capitalist System. If I have the money, I should be able to purchase all the water I want. I'm gonna do my lawn, if that deprives some poor schmuck, well so be it. He should have been born wealthier or studied harder in Bully class, or start working more than 60 hours a week. It's not my problem. He probably owns a 64" TV anyway, so for what purpose does he even need water?

With my money and agression, I am allowed to drive the biggest gas guzzler .. and also buy votes in Congress .. all the same principle.

You two sound like a bunch of weak knee'd socialists, or worse, liberals, or worst of all, Democrats.

JDR, I've got a 2nd car, a 20 year old 4cyl 4x4 beater with a bad O2 sensor that's rusted in and I can't get it out--yet. It's cut my mileage to around 15mpg and it's killing me to drive it.

Is there a place I can enroll for a subsidy or help with gas money?

Yep. you Bunny .. at least until you 'xplain the difference (see my eariler post).

Sorry, Hugh .. you're on your own. Contrary to your perception, I'm the last place to ask for a g-man handout. Look deeper into my posts.

I think if you will look back through my various posts over time, it will prove that the nametags which you have pinned upon me are NOT justified.

I conserve water as much as I possible can, and I merely want others to do the same. I want to see the awareness of the drought remain on the front page so people will THINK before they use water. Sorry, but the ONLY thing I'm guilty of is wanting to have water available to me when I turn on the tap.

If I pegged you wrong, my appologies, Bunny .. but my rec-o-lection is you think it correct to turn America into swiss cheese as a way to get all the oil locally .. NOW .. all promoted as a way to make America less dependent on middle east oil but in fact a way to piss away what we have now rather than CONSERVE it for later.

You tell me.

Personally, I take offense at your labels. Why? Because your "rec-o-lection" about me is totally wrong! Not only do I not believe as you say I believe or do what you assume I do, I don't recall EVER posting anything about oil and/or our use and drilling for such.

Perhaps in the future, you will pay closer attention to my posts and find how wrong your assumptions have been! Might I also suggest that in the future, when you accuse someone of something, that you have something substantial on which to base your claim. Just a suggestion.

Unfortunately, Ms. Hoile, we won't ever get too much coverage on that. Hugh had it right on his first post, but it goes deeper.

Our municipal water supplies amount to little more than chips on a table, and they are gambled every year. Annually, we rely on hurricanes to bring more water. There is always a (fairly safe, admittedly) bet that hurricane season will replenish our lakes and keep us out of trouble. But ask any gambler- occasionally/often there has to be loss. And the value of what we wager is, in this case, more than we are willing to lose. That makes for a poor strategy. True sustainability was gone a long time ago in pursuit of big-city prestige and tax income. Somewhere in the basement of city hall sits a disassociated man with an "APPROVED" stamp and a dusty "DENIED" stamp, and he keeps stamping building permits while other city workers keep looking anxiously to the sky.

As for now, pray our coast will face the destruction that two or three hurricanes will bring next year. And remember- None of us is as dumb as all of us.

If one could readily search this blog, I'd have looked for a better example of your personal posts. I used the oil thing not because I recall you actually saying that, but because it seems typical of the "LIEburals" vs. "CONservative" divisive tone of modern talk. I should and do appologize for "adding" to that negative and stupid direction.

That said .. I find most have hardened positions, irregardless of facts, and without either the ability or the will to look at both sides of a given situation. Even worse is that most arguments are similar to about an apple sitting on table: one swearing it's round and the other swearing it's red.

You wrote: "I used the oil thing not because I recall you actually saying that"

First of all, I have NEVER posted anything regarding oil. You made hte statement, so the burden of proof is on you, not me. Since you can't provide proof of your claim, it tells me that you have no proof other than your (in)ability to accurately recall or comprehend things you have read.

Secondly, since MY thoughts are VERY similar to yours, it doesn't make sense that I should post as you say I have done. I have 2 children who will be greatly affected by the things that are done (or not done) now. It makes no sense that I should want to burden them with problems that could be avoided or eased by our actions now.

Lastly, you clearly can't and/or won't admit that you've mistaken me for someone else. You obviously refuse to be convinced otherwise. This is YOUR problem, not mine because it takes a strong person to admit they are wrong!

Perhaps as you notice future posts by me, you will realize that you are wrong, however I doubt seriously you would ever admit it or apologize. Take care.
