Nation needs to get its fiscal house in order
Recently, our family was blessed with a healthy, 8-pound, 8-ounce granddaughter. Already I think of her future.
The United States is in debt today to the tune of $35,000 per person. The state of North Carolina has an unfunded debt for employee and retiree health insurance that equals $11,000 per North Carolinian. Meanwhile, politicians talk of lowering taxes for individuals and corporations. Something is wrong with this approach.
America and North Carolina must get their fiscal houses in order. We must understand that politicians tell us what they think will get them elected, fact-based or not. They talk of lower taxes, less government oversight on health and safety standards, pensions and health care. Then they inform us that corporations will police themselves.
Let us remember the savings and loan scandal, Enron, the current subprime lending crisis, Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and countless laws they choose not to enforce, including immigration laws already on the books.
In my prayers tonight I will seek help for changes in leadership that will give America back to its people, not the elite and corporations. This America will allow my granddaughter to be healthy, safe, well-educated and prosperous. It is possible, but changes are needed now.

"They talk of lower taxes, less government oversight on health and safety standards, pensions and health care. "
Depends upon the politician. Some talk of more taxes (only for the rich of course), universal govt. health care (mandated by Edwards), and every other goodie you can imagine. None of them clearly detail how this will be paid for except taxing the rich and smokers.
I do agree Carolyn that govt. spends....and wastes....entirely too much of our money and we are in a serious debt to China and other countries. I haven't seen any presidential candidates, including Rs, directly address this issue and what to do about it. Rs have jumped right into the spending bandwagon.
No only our govt., but individuals and families are innundated with debt due to poor financial decisions including the "credit card mentality".
Who has seen the Visa commercial featuring the city of New Orleans and the song "When the Saints go marching"? It shows numerous consumers charging anything and everything to their Visa cards. Along comes one guy who pays cash (oh the horror) and he is shunned.
Great illustration of the charge it and accumulate debt mentality we espouse.

So, shall we give our country over to the government of the People's Republic of Guilford County? Frankly, I feel that lowering taxes and governmental spending is the best for the people. I believe that I can make better decisions on how to spend my money than government bureaucrats.
As I go along, I am beginning to believe that Ron Paul isn't so crazy as I thought. The Paulpots are crazy about Paul, but do they really understand his beliefs? Hint: smaller government and greater personal responsibility.

I did see one presidential candidate directly address the issue. His name was William J. Clinton, and he went on to get elected, address the issue, and left his predessor with a surplus so substantial that it would have wiped out the entire federal debt if it had been left alone.
The "R's", as Dan calls them, never expressed any jubilation or even gratitude over the Clinton surplus. Rather, they spent President Clinton's entire two terms looking for one pretext after another to impeach him and turn governmental policies in a different direction. Naturally, when they finally gained control of the federal government, make their long-sought fiscal policy changes, and the results speak for themselves.

The nation needs to get its fiscal house in order, the title of this letter, is truly a must. Our national debt, our trade deficit, rising foreclosures, credit cards spent to the limit, the falling value of the American dollar in the international scene, jobs going over seas---I fear that we are truly in trouble.
There are some other areas that I could mention but this topic would get side tracked in a second.
We are fast depleting our ability to help other countries to say nothing about the trajedies that are happening day to day here.
There are those who claim that it would not take much to make our country go belly up.
I don't sleep as well as I used to.

Something to think about.
>> The next time you hear a politician use the
>> word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
>> whether you want the 'politicians' spending
>> YOUR tax money.
>>
>>
>> A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
>> but one advertising agency did a good job of
>> putting that figure into some perspective in
>> one of its releases.
>>
>>
>> A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
>>
>> B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
>>
>> C. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and
>> 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
>>
>> While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at
>> New Orleans It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division
>> . .
>>
>> Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the
Congress
>> for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number, what
>> does it mean?
>>
>> A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of
>> New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you
>> each get $516,528.
>>
>> B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
>> New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
>>
>> C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family
>> gets $2,066,012.
>>
>> Washington, D.C.... HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

"give America back to its people"
As Dan pointed out, that may not be a good idea. It's people are fat, lazy, spendthrifts who accumulate debt, whine about everything and wait for the government to bail them out after their poor choices.
And the government will.
First, it's subprime mortgages. What are they going to do when a couple hundred million folks finally and completely max out on ALL of their credit cards?
