Columnist slams Helms, ignores his good points

This responds to Rosemary Roberts' scurrilous slamming of Sen. Jesse Helms in her Jan. 18 column. Roberts failed to mention that 1) One of Helms' legislative aides was civil rights icon James Meredith; 2) Helms and his wife adopted and raised an autistic boy; and 3) when Helms campaigned for Ronald Reagan for a few months in the 1976 primaries, he returned his Senate salary for that period to the taxpayers.

One of Helms' "no's" was opposing government funding for pornographic and obscene art. What's wrong with that? And so what if Helms lacked "compassion" by opposing many government programs? Is it really "compassion" for government to take money by force from one individual or group and bestow it on another? True "compassion" is when one voluntarily helps the less fortunate from her or his personal resources.

Roberts needs to learn what Reagan said nearly 35 years ago about historic figures — it's healthy to study them, warts and all, but when you dwell only on their "faults," it's irresponsible cynicism.

Only in liberal speak, Al...only in liberal speak.

We all know everyone really didn't like Jesse Hems, that's why he was never reelected to office after his first term.

opps! Helms, my l must have fell off.

I don't know if Sen. Helms employing James Meredith can be seen as an example of Sen. Helms being nice. Surely, Sen. Helms used Mr. Meredith's presence as a validation of his vehement opposition to civil rights. By that time in his life, Mr. Meredith had also come out against civil rights. Mr. Meredith also spoke out against: affirmative action, economic sanctions against South Africa and making MLK Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. Mr. Meredith also supported David Duke's run for governor in the state of LA. Basically, you had a seminal figure in the civil rights era, who in the end, was sounding exactly like Sen. Helms.

I have a question for you. Help me understand Sen. Helms' contribution to NC. What does the state of NC have to show for Sen. Helms' 30 yr. career in the US Senate?

Jesse Helms; What does one say when this divisive figure is mentioned?

At one point in my uninformed/uneducated life, I was a staunch Helms supporter. Then I learned to look at the broader picture and realized that Jesse was far behind in his thinking and ideology.

And to base support for dear ole misguided Jesse upon his support against pornography or taking "...money by force from one individual or group and bestow it on another?" is silly. To base support for anyone on one or two points shows the true attribute of an uninformed person/voter. How sad that those people are still out there and voting!

Does anyone realize that Jesse is now in a nursing home, being cared for on the taxpayer's dollar? Where is the injustice for this? Where is the outcry? Why should a politician who lives off of the taxpayer be allowed health care for life on the taxpayer? This is a travesty when many taxpayers go into retirement paying astronomical amounts for health care.

Some day people will really care about the issues instead of caring about a dinosaur who is living off of the government!

Shalom

One thing I can say about Jesse is was right on about NAFTA. We reap what we sow!

Jesse Helms, working for the election of a "conservative" over the "liberal" President of the University of North Carolina, Frank Porter Graham, called UNC "The University of Negroes and Communists".

In more intimate circles and at least once on the air, Jesse didn't mince words, saying UNC stood for the "University of Niggers and Communists".

So how do you defend this man?
How do you give such a racist a free pass?

Oh, and before "little Danny" weighs in with "What about Robert Byrd of West Virginia?", let me say that I didn't vote for him, nor did I defend him either!

Jesse Helms was and is a racist, homophobe, and downright dispicable person.

Some have said the caller into Larry King was a "younger, more overtly racist neocon"...? Could be!

Didn't know you lived in WV Demon Deacon.

If you are comparing Helms to Byrd, Helms wasn't a Grand Kleagle in the KKK and Helms is no longer serving in the Senate.

THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Dan,
You are so predictable. We can always count on you to dish out your usual, "Looky, looky!! There's a Democratic racist too! We're not the only ones!! Looky, looky!"

You are so shallow. I notice how you're silent on Helms' racism--guess that's your father's whisper saying, "son, he's one of us"! I remember how you told us you got your "conservative" bent from your father.
That's how most of today's racists got their credentials--straight from the cradle.

BTW, a North Carolinian cannot vote in West Virginia---I gave you credit for knowing that! My bad! Should have known you didn't know.

:)

Now:

"BTW, a North Carolinian cannot vote in West Virginia--"

Duhhhhh, glad you figured that one out, whew, I was getting worried. You attended a PRIVATE university, spent all that money, and I had to point out basic fundamentals of our political system. Hint, hint, can't do it in Virginia as well Demon Deacon.

Next time you post some elitist mambo jambo I'll resurrect that little jewel about NOT voting for Byrd. Thanks for the laugh of the day.

You are an idiot! Can you not read?

TLC,

I don't think UNC stands for University of Negroes and Communist but you're proving everyday that WF stands for white faggots.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I can read just fine Demon Deacon, you said you didn't vote for Byrd, and then backtracked to cover an obvious fact that you can't vote for Byrd unless a WV resident.

Here 'tis again:

"Oh, and before "little Danny" weighs in with "What about Robert Byrd of West Virginia?", let me say that I didn't vote for him...."

I'll let you slide, we all have bad days.

Nit, don't sink to Demon Deacon's level.

nitpicker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Dan,

You are right. By pointing out the stupidity of his post, I inadvertently made a stupid one of my own.

The comments by Helms were a great diversion. Maybe we should be talking about Richard Nixon, instead. He's about as relevant to current affairs.

THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

In case you two blithering idiots missed it, this letter concerns Helms--NOT Nixon!

Nit, you've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are just another low life bigot. Even little Danny won't publicly admit how he admires Helms. His discretion should be given a tip of the hat, but what lurks on the inside is another matter. Nit, you removed all doubt.

Well, now we know you are not only a racist, but you are a homophobe too! Better hurry along to your KKK meeting, Nitracist. We wouldn't want you to be late.....

I apologize for my use of the word 'faggots'. It was completely insensitive.

I also apologize for insulting Wake Forest. Wake Forest is a reputable school. My post was in bad taste and totally inappropriate and wrong.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Very touching indeed. I await your apologies Demon Deacon, you can start with the "blithering idiots" remark, I never mentioned Nixon in this thread. I won't hold my breath.
