Edwards is an also-ran; why all the coverage?
Please help me understand, News & Record. Barack Obama (55 percent) trounces Hillary Clinton (27 percent) and John Edwards (18 percent) in the South Carolina primary, yet the News & Record headline of the event is "Edwards camp remains upbeat despite setback"? A setback? How about a resounding defeat?
John Edwards narrowly won second prize in Iowa but placed a distant third in New Hampshire, Nevada, and now South Carolina, his home state. He couldn't carry North or South Carolina for John Kerry as a vice presidential candidate.
I've noticed many News & Record articles featuring Edwards, who is lagging a distant third in most national polls. Why all the Edwards press? Perhaps due to Edwards living in a nearby Orange County palace or serving a brief stint as a U.S. senator on the way to a perpetual run for president? That's irrelevant.
Please focus on the true contenders for the Democratic nomination, Edwards is history. Before anyone assumes I'm a Barack or Hillary fan, I'm a conservative and would never vote for either of them.

"I'm a conservative and would never vote for either of them."
So no voting for McCain, 'cause ya know he's a radical, the bane of the "R" Party, Romney is a flip-flopping polygamist, Huckabee is a leftist on everything but abortion .. but don't worry ... McCain will be the next President.
Posted on January 31, 2008 3:30 AM
You got that right Rockhead, no true conservative would vote for John (open boarders ) McCain. In my opinion we have a poor crop of candidates. I am for none of the above. Watch John fight for checks to the ILLEGALS, I think it comes up for vote to day.
He will show his true colors.
Posted on January 31, 2008 6:20 AM
Scuttlebutt is that he wants to be Obama's AG.
Posted on January 31, 2008 6:52 AM
JDR,
That's a pretty strong charge to call Romney a polygamist. Look out, because your religious bias is showing or your just running your mouth again to get attention.
Posted on January 31, 2008 7:56 AM
What a weird letter. Chastising a paper for giving the public too much information. Perhaps they should decide which of the candidates is eventually going to win this thing and only cover them.
Edwards ran a good campaign that would have gotten him a lot farther in a lot of years. He is a native son. The major criticism has been that the press didn't cover anyone but the top 2 "historic" candidates.
Mr. Imbus is probably happier now that he doesn't have to skip over the line or 2 that Mr. Edwards was getting a day.

Mitt Romney married his high school sweetheart Ann Davies on March 21, 1969. They have five sons and are still married. Couldn't find anything about him being married to anyone else or any infidelity.
Rudy closer fits a polygamist.

"This letter has been rendered moot.."
Ghost, considering there is a lag time between writing, approval and printing of an LTE, the author's prediction was correct: "Edwards is history."
Edwards isn't moot, he'll be cozying up to Hillary or Obama for a cabinet position if either of them win.
Yesterday Edwards said he passed by a bridge where 100-200 homeless people slept at night. Anyone ever seen a bridge with a few hundred homeless people underneath? I haven't even seen that in 3rd world countries.
Edwards should return to Chapel Hill, take care of his wife, and open a homeless shelter in the west wing of his mansion.
Good riddance.

Been to New Orleans lately? Oh, that's right. You are a GOP hack--"You're doing a heckuva job, Brownie".

Tom,
If this is the extent of your worries, life must be very good at your house. Incidentally, the N&R has the freedom to print what they see fit. You are equally free not to read it.

McCain???
Guess most of the GOP mouthpieces who post here can't remember the Keatiing Five. Yep, old "Savings & Loan John McCain" cost us all a fortune, before wrapping himself in the P.O.W. flag to insulate himself. He's a real doozy.
We started off with a bright group of candidates and its been whittled down to who has the most money on the Dem side and whose turn it is to run on the GOP side. Sheesh!
Posted on January 31, 2008 9:21 AM
I'm afraid your last sentence is right, J.D.R., and I'm bothered by the idea of a McCain presidency almost as much as a couple of the others. Fortunes can be lost and gained again (and now's the time, fwiw), but speech, once compromised and given away, is a greater loss than we can comprehend.
I can't speak for any of the rest of the site this links to, but here is a voting tally for McCain-Feingold and for who believes in our Constitution and who doesn't. Spin as they will, politicians passing rules mandating what can and can't be talked about 60 days before an election is nothing less:
http://www.mentata.com/ds/retrieve/congress/vote/VC107S22
And most would admit that if something doesn't happen the week of an election than the public won't remember it, or won't remember how lousy it was when it did occur (Kennedy is the best example, but there are plenty on both sides of the aisle).
The idea of having a president with an active mind towards silencing opposition through use of the law is...
I can't even come up with the word. Horrible, but in a slow and secret way. And we'll have legislators willing to work with him if the time comes again.
We reap the whirlwind.

"Been to New Orleans lately?"
Link a contemporary photo (nothing immediately after a natural disaster) of 100-200 people sleeping under a bridge in the U.S. and I'll take it back.
BTW, I agree with your statement on McCain, Demon Deacon, I'm not at all thrilled with him.

Here's a great story on McCain that was probably before folks like "little Danny" were weaned from breast milk:
Is John McCain a Crook?
Chris Suellentrop
Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 2:35 PM ET
---------------------------------------------------------------
The controversial George W. Bush-sponsored poll in South Carolina mentioned John McCain's role in the so-called Keating Five scandal, and McCain says his involvement in the scandal "will probably be on my tombstone." What exactly did McCain do?
In early 1987, at the beginning of his first Senate term, McCain attended two meetings with federal banking regulators to discuss an investigation into Lincoln Savings and Loan, an Irvine, Calif., thrift owned by Arizona developer Charles Keating. Federal auditors were investigating Keating's banking practices, and Keating, fearful that the government would seize his S&L, sought intervention from a number of U.S. senators.
At Keating's behest, four senators--McCain and Democrats Dennis DeConcini of Arizona, Alan Cranston of California, and John Glenn of Ohio--met with Ed Gray, chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, on April 2. Those four senators and Sen. Don Riegle, D-Mich., attended a second meeting at Keating's behest on April 9 with bank regulators in San Francisco.
Regulators did not seize Lincoln Savings and Loan until two years later. The Lincoln bailout cost taxpayers $2.6 billion, making it the biggest of the S&L scandals. In addition, 17,000 Lincoln investors lost $190 million.
In November 1990, the Senate Ethics Committee launched an investigation into the meetings between the senators and the regulators. McCain, Cranston, DeConcini, Glenn, and Riegle became known as the Keating Five.
(Keating himself was convicted in January 1993 of 73 counts of wire and bankruptcy fraud and served more than four years in prison before his conviction was overturned. Last year, he pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud and was sentenced to time served.)
McCain defended his attendance at the meetings by saying Keating was a constituent and that Keating's development company, American Continental Corporation, was a major Arizona employer. McCain said he wanted to know only whether Keating was being treated fairly and that he had not tried to influence the regulators. At the second meeting, McCain told the regulators, "I wouldn't want any special favors for them," and "I don't want any part of our conversation to be improper."
But Keating was more than a constituent to McCain--he was a longtime friend and associate. McCain met Keating in 1981 at a Navy League dinner in Arizona where McCain was the speaker. Keating was a former naval aviator himself, and the two men became friends. Keating raised money for McCain's two congressional campaigns in 1982 and 1984, and for McCain's 1986 Senate bid. By 1987, McCain campaigns had received $112,000 from Keating, his relatives, and his employees--the most received by any of the Keating Five. (Keating raised a total of $300,000 for the five senators.)
After McCain's election to the House in 1982, he and his family made at least nine trips at Keating's expense, three of which were to Keating's Bahamas retreat. McCain did not disclose the trips (as he was required to under House rules) until the scandal broke in 1989. At that point, he paid Keating $13,433 for the flights.
And in April 1986, one year before the meeting with the regulators, McCain's wife, Cindy, and her father invested $359,100 in a Keating strip mall.
Next question?

Yep! Ol' John McCain carries a lot more baggage than his stance on immigration.
Like clockwork, here's where little Danny will step in and say, "Looky, looky, looky!!!! The four others were Democrats! They did it too! Look! They did it too! Not just McCain...Democrats too!!"
Well, "GOP Danny" --before you show your ignorance AGAIN, those four are NOT running for President of the United States of America!
Now, Danny, tell us how you like him because he says he's "conservative"! LOL!!

Funny how Demon Deacon gets all hyped up by predicting what he thinks I might post. More funny that I actually agreed with him in the first place and he still tosses insults.
Just relax, take a deep breath, swallow one or two of your LOLs, and reread my 10:04 post Demon Deacon. I'm not thrilled with McCain at all. He is basically "Democrat light".
Not sure yet but if he's the nominee I may stay home on election day.

There should be a block marked "none of the above" on any ballot. If this block gets the most votes, then leave the chair unfilled. We would be better off with an empty chair than some of the idiots that fill them. This presidental election is a prime example.

"There should be a block marked "none of the above" on any ballot."
Nah,
Some fool would have himself legally renamed "none of the above" and end up President.
Isn't that how Bush did it?

Dear Allen Johnson and News & Record Letter to the Editor monitors:
The following is a summary of personal attacks by The Liberal Conservative on other bloggers JUST for the month of January.
These type of attacks stifle real conversation or debate about issues.
The News & Record once had a policy prohibiting personal attacks on its blogs. There have been a few people banned from the blogs due to ignoring these warnings and taste guidelines.
I question how one blogger seems to continue with these attacks with no actions by the News & Record.
Please bring civility back to the Letters to the Editor blog. It has become a cesspool where folks who wish to offer their opinion often leave and don’t return due to being personally attacked and mocked.
In the spirit of equity for the others who have been banned from this blog, please act accordingly with this poster:

Speaking of ignorance and partisanship, it is ALWAYS nice to see Tony Mostschitti post!! 1/4/08
Tonymo is the most one dimensional person to post here. 1/4/08
He is the classic "blowhard" from the North who, like a painful hemorrhoid, came down and stayed. 1/4/08
THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS SHOW OF IGNORANCE IN QUITE SOME TIME! 1/3/08

Thanks for making me almost pee my pants at your ridiculous posts! 1/4/08

Geez Louise! Someone get these nutcakes back to their dorms. 1/4/08DING, DING, DING!!! A new contender for STUPIDEST POST OF THE DAY: 1/4/08
neo and Dan drink from the same swill of FoxNews. Poor Dan has no clue how stupid he appears to normal people, but I think neo knows he's off his rocker but not to the actual extent! 1/5/08
Dan attacks the messenger. It is the extent of his cerebral capacity as he is quite limited in that area. 1/5/08
As I've said many times, he's an inch deep and a mile wide. 1/5/08
Tell us "WHY" we should respect and wallow in his excrement as you do 1/5/08
Rather than post your usual drivel, just answer the question. See if you can do that this time.1/5/08
I could never be a Republican, because I would have to hate black people, Mexicans, and gay people
Bottom line is they are mostly like Dan, no substance, just armchair ideology.1/5/08
I just love it when our resident Partisan, Tony Mostschitti comments. He probably goes to church, parties, family gatherings etc, and separates everyone into "LIBERALS" and whatever his idea du jour of "CONSERVATIVES" is. The man has no idea what a joke he is, but rather thinks of himself as the ONLY way.
Like I said, I do love it when he opens his mouth and removes all doubt! 1/5/08
Wow! Like we couldn't have predicted that kind of rubbish coming from you. How about posting your highest level of education, neo? Based on your posts, my guess would be "some high school". Sheesh! 1/3/08
That's because the people you hang around with have no clue. Your small gaggle of friends wouldn't know culture if it bit them on the arse and you are the mirror image of that group. Maybe you can answer the question posed about your highest level of education received?? 1/3/08
So, neo, was the third grade your high water mark?
Or, could it be you are just an armchair bigot, who feels betrayed by the "system" and therefore you blame your failings on others???
Or maybe, just maybe, your alligator mouth got way ahead of your mental faculties??? 1/4/08
Why are you such a coward?1/4/08
you just an armchair critic with an alligator mouth and hummingbird's ass?
Well, it appears 2008 will continue to have the far right wingers yacking like always. 1/1/08

"Maybe instead of "Denying" there are homeless.."
One more time Demon Deacon, relax, take a deep breath. Breathe in......breathe out......there, much better.
Ok, let's get back to primary reading skills. You didn't read my post in which I actually agreed with you on McCain. Rather you shot back with some insulting nonsense about how I would respond. Gee whiz I can't win, even when I agree with you I'm insulted.
Please blast McCain all you want, he's not a conservative and I don't support him. Republican doesn't necessarily mean conservative.
*************************************************
Now you you claim I deny there are homeless people. Wrong still yet again, this is too easy. Here 'tis again my question, remember primary reading:
"Anyone ever seen a bridge with a few hundred homeless people underneath?"
Tell me how this question concludes I deny homeless people exist O Wise One. I know they exist, I've just simply never seen a bridge with a few hundred homeless people under it anywhere including S. America, Europe or Africa, much less here. Your link didn't show a the "bridge" either. The point is Sen. Edwards tends to exaggerate a bit.
**********************************************
As for those less fortunate, our church donates 10% of our offerings each week to community organizations that assist the poor, whether homeless or not. We also do additional fundraisers, donate food and clothing for them as well.

Nice work Nit, that must take some time to compile such a sheer number, just for one month only! Imagine doing a year of them. Did you email that info to the N&R?
Even some on the left are finally letting their voices be heard although too many are probably afraid to call him out. From NanP recently:
NanP said:

Dan,
I posted it to the Editor's blog and Allen Johnson's blog (Allen reviews things before they print).
Even though we see it every day, it is still astounding and eye-opening to see it compiled like that.
It's not that I am vengeful or want him silenced. It's just that I think they should be aware and handle these situations with fairness. I wish it would help TLC see how he comes across but that may be just too much wishful thinking.
Posted on January 31, 2008 2:34 PM
Saw it on the Editor's blog Nit. Your collection is astounding, kinda like if you see one piece of trash on side of the road it's no big deal but a huge pile of trash catches the eye. Good analogy imho as all of these insults are just that; trash.
Demon Deacon promised Yvonne years ago he would clean up the rhetoric, alas a leopard cannot change it's spots:
Thanks Yvonne.
I will watch my own words more carefully, as I have entered the gutteral areas heretofore held firmly by the right wing.

Nitpicker,
I'm sure Allen Johnson has seen all of your racist comments too. Guess being a racist is okay in your eyes?? Hum? Why don't you tell Allen about your thoughts on test scores, black people, and crime?
Oh, that's right! You've already posted them.
Posted on January 31, 2008 3:37 PM
I welcome Allen's opinions on anything I have to say. He'd probably have a completely different perspective than I and I'd respect that without name-calling and personal insults.
Everyone says things here that can be controversial. Even an occasional jab here or there can be easily overlooked as having been in the heat of the moment. Discussions of politics are never pretty.
Daily personal attacks and hostility towards fellow bloggers as noted above are of a different nature, in my opinion.
Allen has booted people from this blog for failure to adhere to N&R policies.
Considering the mountain of evidence, I'd be hugely disappointed if he didn't at least give you a warning to abstain from the personal attacks. If he allows these type of comments without any sort of action or follow-up, it really reflects a great deal on him. After all, this blog is his baby, not mine.
Failure to do anything would indicate approval of--perhaps even participation in-- the comments you've made.

Nit,
Calling you out for your racial insults seems to have struck a nerve. Maybe you should consider your comments and apologize for them, if for nothing else, on the basis of pure ignorance of the topic. Racism is deeply rooted in ignorance, and for you to say the things you have said about people of color shows your ignorance. It also shows a lack of understanding of racial sensitivity.
Hugh,
Sorry if pointing out racism causes you discomfort. It is sad that it still does to many white people.
Posted on February 1, 2008 8:21 AM
Look how nice libral conservationist can be. But the dirty end of the stick still don't point back at himself.
Til it does (and it NEVER will), i hope to see this paper reprimand his words and hypocrisy.
Come on Allen, why the double-standard?

Mr. Johnson, are you listening here? 7 posts from your example of how not to behave in these forums, all proving you to be very astute.
Dan, whatever you do, do NOT stay home on election day. No matter who wins the Republican nomination, if enough people sit it out because Mcain is the candidate, we will end up with eeither Obama or Hillary appointing Supreme Court judges. I'm not convinced Obama qould be a terrible president, but I think he needs more seasoning. A lot more seasoning. His comments about meeting with adversarial foreign leaders without conditions is way too naive. He has not yet called for MANDATORY universal health care, but he is right next to it.
As for Hillary, just think Travelgate, missing FBI files, Whitewater, cattle futures, selling secrets to the Chinese in exchange for contributions, etc, etc. The Clintons (and we would be looking at a dual presidency) have not stopped their slimy ways since leaving the White House. Note the story this week about a mining executive traveling to Khasakstan with Bill Clinton, ending up with a uranium mining contract, and Bill ending up with a several million dollar donation to his presidential library. And Bill's conduct during the campaign has been absolutely terrible. Remember "The Politics of Personal Destruction"? His lies on behalf of his wife are just as bad as the ones he told to get himself elected in 1992. "The worst economy in 50 years!") Do we really want four more years of scandal, and questioning the definition of the word "is"?
The GOP would not put up a worse candidate than either of these two.
