Tax increases for schools steal from pension income

Regarding your opinion (editorial, Jan. 19) saying I have a unique obligation to rebuild Eastern Guilford High School: You mentioned the insurance would not cover the replacement costs of a 32-year-old building. Why was the insurance not upgraded? Why should the taxpayers pay for something that was deliberately destroyed by arson and negligence on the part of Guilford County? I do not feel obligated at all! Property owners are paying for everything! Since 2001, my property taxes have been raised $500 and I have a modest home.

It is ridiculous how the Board of Education is always begging for money for schools and what have you. School taxes are already out the roof. Retirees cannot afford all these bonds that are being asked for. It is taking all of our pensions just to pay property taxes. I am thinking very seriously about moving out of Guilford County and a lot of others have the same agenda. With gas, grocery and utility prices raised, we just do not need more tax hikes, period. That goes for all the other bond referendums that are going to be on May 6.

It is disappointing how much money is spent on education .. with the results seeming to be inversely proportional to the spending.

There's gotta be a better way that assures ALL kids get the needed skills and knowledge ... and motivation.

In its "political essense" schools are a government employment program for adults --- highly organized adults I might add.

Politics is these adults' lifeline. If they can "take care of" their politicians, they have nothing to worry about in terms of performance. For example: Just try to introduce any sort of measure that would allow parents/children to opt out --- exit the monopoly --- without severe financial penalty and you will find out just how good these adults are at protecting their lock on a captive children.

This --- 800-pound-gorilla-style political clout --- explains school systems' ability to constantly increase funding independent of their performance.

These highly organized adults are political giants, no doubt. But are also no slouches in terms of public relations. Example: Each of our 50 state schooling monopolies have their own testing system -- whose scores can be jiggled, adjusted, abandoned, administered, scored, reported, etc. --- as their discretion. This prevents meaningful comparision with other state schooling monopolies.

Haven't you read Paul Dye's letter Earline? Democrats control the purse strings in Guilford county. This is how they create an economic shangri-la...by taxing old people out of their homes, then blaming republicans for it when the woes set in.
Think of it as an 'investment in our shilldrun', then go to Wal-mart and hope they have 'Progresso chicken noodle' on clearance.

Earline,

I'll be voting a big fat NO on all bonds. My home insurance automatically updates for increase in value. Seems strange that the school would not update theirs.

Let me know if you need a ride to the poll.

Odd how THE LIBERAL CANADIANETTE finds fault with anyone who questions the powers that be when they raise taxes. She has GOT to be suckling off the government teat in some form or fashion. Perhaps a janitor down at the courthouse or dishwasher in the public zoo system? A close family member who lives off the largess of the taxpayers?
Something along these lines is usually what you find when you finally uncover the truth about blowhards who question everyone else's ability.

I too will vote "NO" on any and all bonds that the democrats try to shove down our throats...shilldrun or no.

Nitracist,
Your post was no surprise. Unless they could craft a bond that only helped white people, I knew you would not support it. You are pathetic.

Is it true they are building a new school in Randolph County to house there influx of ILLEGALS?

nitpicker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Bonds, by their very nature, hurt white people.

TDBB, there is a new HS set to open to take the overcrowding off of Randleman and Eastern Randolph High School's; Pleasant Grove. It opens this Fall. RC is also building Wheatmore HS on Finch Farm Rd. This will help ease overcrowding at Trinity HS. I believe that there is another one in the plans as well, however, I cannot remember for certain.

Nitracist,
You have NO idea what you are talking about!

Bonds are issued so that people today can enjoy the projects as well as the people of several generations--highways, sidewalks, schools, parks etc. The cost is spread over twenty years or more so that today's population doesn't shoulder the entire burden of debt that was issued--for projects enjoyed for 40+ years!
In turn, bonds purchased by investors provide TAX FREE income....which is why the borrowing costs are much lower.

People who say stupid things, like you said above, have no clue about municipal finance.

Back when Guilford County could borrow money at 2.5%, Walt Cockerham was running for County Commisioner saying "Bonds mean higher taxes" which showed how little he knew about things. Upon his election he had to change his tune!! He then realized that he had pissed in the well and now had to drink from it!
So, instead of posting your ignorant remarks, why don't you try to understand things more complicated than turning on your computer and dishing out your racist rants.

You could argue the same for the national debt. You are borrowing money to squander today that future generations will have to pay off.

Those future generations will likely be property owners.

The white thing was just for fun and to watch you twitch.

Nitracist,
AGAIN--You are an IDIOT!

It is nothing like the national debt!

Bonds are continually being paid off and General Obligation bonds cannot be for more than 20 years with bonds maturing from one to twenty! North Carolina has the highest number of bonds rated triple A by both ratings agencies, which means we enjoy the lowest borrowing costs! Back when Hector Rivera was the County Manager, and Steve Arnold was the Chair of the Co. Commissioners---Rivera tried to tell Arnold and company that Guilford County was on the cusp of having a AAA rating, which would have lowered our borrowing costs substantially. But instead of listening, Arnold and Cockerham said, "Spend the Rainy Day Fund down to build schools--don't issue bonds!". Well, guess what? They did! They raided the rainy day account and Guilford never reached triple A status.

Oh, and so that little "nancy boy" Dan understands, it was a Democratic majority that had to begin squirreling away money to rebuild the rainy day fund---the one the "conservatives" squandered!

Now Arnold is personally bankrupt, and people like you believed he was such a good "fiscal conservative"!

Your posts are ignorant and devoid of any value. You are pathetic! Stick to things you KNOW about, like rednecks, tattoo parlors, and monster truck shows.

Wasn't the lottery supposed to solve all of our educational financial needs?
I bought a ticket once, I think. Maybe it was in South Carolina.
Speaking of people who seem to be immune from repercussions, should we not hold the County Commissioners culpable in that basic property insurance was not maintained?
I don't care who was responsible for insurance three years ago, whoever had the job last year should have noticed the underinsurance problems.
Has anyone checked on the status of other schools? Are THEY properly insured?
We could save money by dismantling the bloated bureaucracy created by the nearly-departed Grier.

neocon and others,

As I read L.C.'s comments on school bonds, it seems that she is quite familiar with them. I recall that there was a school board member that actually headed the school bond campaign in 2003. L.C.'s acerbic and biting comments also are strong reminders of that board member. She demonstrated her nasty disposition regularly with constituents with which she disagreed. She also considered herself an elite, and making derogatory comments about rednecks would fit her style nicely She certainly earned the label "Liberal" during her tenure on the board, and she had no love for the county commissioners. She would also be an individual that dearly desired for the school board to have direct taxing authority. Interesting match.
