Well-educated immigrants will make better citizens
You move here illegally from a foreign country at 18 months old with your parents. They work hard, pay taxes and make sure you go to school. You graduate from high school third in your class, with many of your peers going to top colleges. But what about you? It does not matter how smart you are or how much savings you have. The best you can do is get a job as an illegal alien. There is no college for you.
Looking at the bigger picture, if we do not grant guest worker passes to those who are already here, what will happen? We will have a huge population of "Americanized" kids only allowed low-income jobs. Crackdowns on hiring illegals will result in more of what we saw in Texas on Nov. 14.
There are half a million illegal immigrants in North Carolina. Let's allow them to continue their education. Education has proven to reduce crime and create "good citizens." Since most Latinos already have fantastic family values, a real sense of responsibility and the desire to achieve their goals, I think making them legal, contributing visitors is more important than how many seats their children are taking. Let's treat them with the respect they deserve.

Bull Crap. I am not for rewarding law breakers.
There are only so many seats available in college, are you suggestion, that hard working working american families be left out to reward criminals. I agree we you on one thing lets treat them with respect, throw the law breakers in jail.
I wonder what you have to say if someone broke into your house, bet you be screaming your head off.

When the children of illegals become of legal age, they can start their own process to become legal. If they are as smart as you are portraying them, they will follow this process. Also, if these parents are so full of family values, why are they thinking of their children's education, especially before those children graduate HS? You'll find very little sympathy here. I had to worry, work and struggle to make sure my own three had an education. Now the process goes on with my six grandchildren who will lose out to some illegal because of folks like you.

...why are they NOT thinking.....

"Since most Latinos already have fantastic family values...I think making them legal, contributing visitors is more important than how many seats their children are taking."
The "family values" argument, a favorite of President Bush, is of the selling points used by the open borders side in the debate on illegal immigration. This is to rationalize rewarding those who enter the U. S. illegally with a de facto path to citizenship (and thus repeating the 1986 amnesty of 3 million illegal aliens that has resulted in 12-20 million new illegal aliens).
It's a plausible argument --- give Bush and Ms. Lamothe credit --- but it's statistically incorrect:
"Hispanics have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country. Nearly 50 percent of Hispanic children are born out of wedlock, a rate twice that of whites and three times that of Asians . . . To be sure, many Hispanic immigrants are industrious strivers who seize every opportunity available to them, but too many of their children are assimilating into the underclass and adopting its values. The incarceration rate of Mexican-Americans jumps eight-fold . . . between the 1st and 2nd generations, to a rate three and a half times that of whites . . .” (Heather Mac Donald, senior fellow, Manhattan Institute).*

No, these kids will have outstanding educations compared to the their peers when they return home their countries of citizenship.
We're giving them an advantage paid for by the taxpayers of America and they won't even thank us for it.

The writer says:You move here illegally from a foreign country at 18 months old with your parents.
The best you can do is get a job as an illegal alien.
No matter what job you get, it will be as an illegal alien, because that's what you are.
I think the only way to stop this is to "crackdown on hiring"these "guest workers".
I understand why they flock here, I also understand the reason they are hired. Profit trumps all else.
They claim to only take jobs no american wants,
I say, BS.

Once again a writer espouses kindness and generosity to illegal immigrants. Nothing wrong with that except these writers never express the same sentiment about their fellow citizens. Rather, they would take the money from these citizens and transfer it to foreign nationals.
Find a solution to the American education crisis before transferring our educational resources to foreign citizens. These writers love foreigners while not giving a damn about their own neighbors.

Verelse: "These writers love foreigners while not giving a damn about their own neighbors."
There's much truth in that statement. More than a few of "these writers" do not like the demographic make-up of the U. S. and will use any means to change it. They have a tremendous arsenal:
1) the 1965 Immigration Act, which made Latin America and, secondarily, Asia the almost exclusive source of legal immigraiton --- "family reunification" provision which produces chain migration of extended families and
2) the current misapplication of the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause which allows a pregnant foreign national to illegally cross our borders to gain American citizenship for her new born. Ten percent of all births today in the U. S. are to illegal alien mothers and
3) the greed of corporations seeking the cheapest possible labor whatever the costs to society and
4) the servants of corporations and ethnic pressure groups in the White House, Congress and in state legislatures.
Nations can and do unravel. Will there be a U. S. in 2050?

As has been noted already; Why give up the limited number of seats to an illegal alien instead of a poor smart student whose family has been in the US for more years than a family of illegals combined?
While this LTTE writer presents a noble case, it does not float!

i got an idea - why don't 11 or 12 million american citizen cross over the mexican border and enter into their work force, demanding health care, education and other government benefits. average american citizens must follow any prescribed path which our government mandates, i.e. forms, policies, proceures, paperwork, bureaucracy, red tape etc. but some would extend our resources (as verelse pointed out) to non citizens at the expense of true americans. i'm all for compassion and benevolence but it must be administered with some sort of intelligence.

All great points but Hugh took the words out of my mouth:
Writer says: "There is no college for you."
No, there is. It's just in Mexico or whatever country they legally belong to. Personally, I don't think they should be attending US Colleges at ANY tuition rate, IF they are in this country illegally.

Since I was getting ready to go to work at 0533 this morning (so I could pay for food vouchers for illegals and their next doctor visit...at the local ER), I didn't have time to expound on the "family values" BS. I can say it has been my experience Tom is right in his posting of 0728. Domestic violence is higher among the hispanic population here in Siler City than any other group. Of course since the population here is around 60% hispanic, I guess that is to be expected (not). More US citizens are killed in our area by (usually illegal) drunk hispanic drivers. Our incidence of TB admissions to the hospital are almost exclusively hispanic. We never have any other group of people come to the hospital and use someone else's ID and insurance card like the hispanic population (can you say insurance fraud?)
Lying, cheating, stealing, beating up on women and children, driving drunk, killing innocent people....yea, this is family values alright. By what gauge is Tracey making the claim illegals have "good family values"? Are we to forget about the lying, cheating, stealing, etc. just because most are hard-working? I think not!
