Nothing was surprising about Edwards quitting

Wow. Given the size of the front-page banner headline (Jan. 31), one would have expected a more tragic and unexpected situation. Many are disappointed that North Carolina favorite son, John Edwards, abandoned his bid for the presidency. But, "aghast”? How could supporters not see this coming? Poor showings in the various caucuses, low funding, the fact that he couldn't even carry his birth state of South Carolina.

Perhaps Pricey Harrison and others were not reading the previous editions of the News & Record. If memory serves, one reader complained about the lack of coverage for Edwards. The reason? His now-ended campaign was an afterthought. It's not front-page news.

Edwards' platform to address poverty issues was commendable. However, the voting public has been unable to rationalize this from a man who lives in a 27,000-square-foot mansion and gets $400 haircuts.

I started to post this as a joke .. but it ended up confirming my status!

First the joke part:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney beat McCain in a straw poll at the conservative conference ... even though the "War on Terrorism" the #1 "conservative" issue

.. and for a President - "Position on Issues" (which Romney has proved can be change like a babies' diaper) is Three Times more important than Leadership Qualities" ...

... and honesty is apparently not important ..

Then the "confirming my status" part. I'm so excited!!

.. and the final answer-reason for going into Iraq - you know the reason that actually stuck in the hearts and minds of the American People (I guess I'm not an American 'cause ialways thought it was crap): "Spreading Democracy Around the World" didn't rank high in importance. Hey - I have proof of my conservative nature!

.. and more proof of my conservative nature: They agree with me that g-man "intrusion" shoulf be taken out of the abortion discussions!

I don't think "the voting public" see this as a problem, Mr. Shaw. Look at the track record of countless multi-millionaire liberal politicians who have made a successful career out of dividing (and conquering) America using the class envy strategy. DC is full of them.

How many times over the last 50 years have liberals been elected to public office promising to 'end poverty' or at least wage a serious 'war on poverty', only to be succeeded by yet another liberal politician claiming that there is STILL "two Americas" and we should elect them so he/she can remedy that situation? The people who vote for these hucksters would make a good prospect for a bridge salesman...imo, of course!

Edwards would have been taken a little more seriously had he sold all his assets and donated the proceeds to charity, but that's not how liberals wage their "war on poverty", is it? NO, NO...it must be other people's money confiscated and passed along to keep the welfare state fully functional and to insure the poor dependant slobs on the receiving end of these freebies "elect, elect, elect"...

It's all BS .. Neo just wears color selective glasses

neo,
You make me smile with delight every time you post! I have no idea where you come up with the bizaare ideas, but they do qualify as "comedy", albeit, on a very esoteric scale.

FWIW, George Herbert Walker Bush claimed he lived out of a hotel room in Texas, a state with no state income taxes--but spent most of his time in Kennebunkport, Maine or at another family home in Connecticut. Ronald Reagan lived in a home that was worth millions.

But I guess those things really don't matter when it comes to slapstick comedians! LOL!

I guess it boils down to this cRock-o-...feller: If voting for someone on the premise that they will 'minimize government' as opposed to voting for someone who runs on the premise of increasing the welfare state by playing the class envy card is "wearing color selective glasses"... then I'm guilty as charged.

This "war on poverty" being waged in the "two Americas" has been going on since 1933.
How long does it take, and how will we know when it's won...when an Edwardsesque like president and an 11% approval rated congress impose a tax rate of 100% on the hated 'rich'?

Then wouldn't is be more honest to vote and promote some party other then "the lesser of two evils"?

surely there is a third alternative that would more suit your beliefs ... perhaps the Constitution Party or the Libertarian Party?

Seriously man, it's as easy to cut down clueless Dems as it is to cut up the hypocritical GOP.

I highly doubt Edwards will fade into the woodwork. Notice he hasn't endorsed Hillary or Obama. My guess is he's laying neutral so he can suck up to the eventual nominee for a cozy position. HUD secretary would be a good one as Edwards seems to know a thing or two about housing. Perhaps the IRS, now that's a scary thought. Nah, the White House kitchen would be the best. Since Edwards portrays America as a few wealthy people and everyone else in the soup line he could open a soup line right there on 1600 Penna Ave. NW.

Dan - have any thoughts on this:

The overall median personal income for all individuals over the age of 18 was $25,149 .. ($32,140 for those age 25 or above) in

That's $12.10 / hour for all .. $15.50 for "established" America .. interesting maybe .. especially when considering a couple billionaires and really screw the stats'.

Think also what you and most of your friends make .. and contrast the difference ...

My thoughts JDR:

Take a drive thru Greensboro, Boston, Raleigh, Atlanta, Wichita, Phoenix, Seattle, basically anywhere in the US. Each city will have some better and worse sections, namely better. Next, take a drive (or boat ride) through Tanzania or Brazil, I've done both. Then get back to me on the definition of poverty.

Perhaps if Edwards is REALLY concerned about poverty he should attempt to assist REALLY poor people in REALLY poor countries. Oprah did it in S. Africa to her credit. Let's see if Edwards can follow suit.

I agree with Neo's point but I also agree with the author, it's hard to take a politician seriously on the issue of poverty when he lives in a 28,000 foot mansion and gets $400 haircuts.

Dan,

You seem for forget everything is relative. We are not talking about nor living in Tanzania or Brazil. You keep trying to compare apples to oranges but get the same result.

BTW, why don't you sell your plane, your boat, your SUV and your house so you can donate more to charity? Seems we have a bit of EDS exhibited in this thread.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Sorry but we don't agree Yvonne. Census Bureau data:

Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.

The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

I bring up Tanzania and Brazil for a reason. Whenever I hear people like Edwards whining about how bad poverty is in the US I think of the people I met in those countries. Go there or any Third World country and you will understand.

Oprah sees it a relevant non? Her famous quote as to why she built a school in S. Africa instead of an inner city in the US:

“I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn’t there,” she says. “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”

"BTW, why don't you sell your plane, your boat, your SUV and your house so you can donate more to charity?"

Look who's comparing apples to oranges.

Edwards is an uber rich man who's cause célčbre is poverty yet he lives in a 28,000 sq. ft. mansion and gets $400 hair cuts.

Unlike Edwards, I am a middle class man who has worked hard, has had a passion for flying since childhood and saved money to buy a small 4 seat 35 year old airplane. It's funny how non pilots equate aircraft ownership with wealth. Most pilots and aircraft owners are middle income guys like me. One of my fellow aircraft owners is a state trooper, another a city clerk, another a teacher. Go out to the Siler City airport some day and you will find the same.

Now that Edwards doesn't have to waste money on a failed presidential campaign he can spend his millions on eradicating poverty.
