Presidential deception blamed for war in Iraq
In Elizabeth Jones' letter (Jan. 26), she says that President Bush is doing a wonderful and moral job.
I believe to deceive is a sin. No president has deceived the American people more.
She also condemns liberals for withholding the needs of our troops. If the president did not deceive the American people about WMDs, we would not have troops in Iraq to support.

Paul, You are singing the same old song without actually thinking. You give the President a lot of clout when it isnt there. He is -the Commander-in-Chief of our Military but even then he acts with the approval of Congress. Congress had the intel and they agreed there were WMD. Bush should have immediately invaded instead of giving them time to move their stuff across the border into Syria.
Im not saying Bush didnt make mistakes and isnt still but I am saying we were on the same page when we did go in.
Posted on February 1, 2008 5:31 AM
Deceiving is a sin? Seems that is exactly what you are doing! Clinton also said there was wmds. Congress said there were wmds. And how were the folks gassed if there was not wmds.
Posted on February 1, 2008 7:48 AM
Dog,
Clinton didn't take us into Iraq! Seems to be a bit of a distinction there. He rightfully decided containment was the sensible strategy.

Looks like the infinite monkey theorem works for Letters to the Editor too...
Posted on February 1, 2008 8:44 AM
Rock,
Re: Infinite Monkey Theory.
That reminds me of an experiment that they did in Crawford Texas a few years ago. They postulated that they could run an infinite number of monkeys for president and one of them would get elected. The amazing thing was that they got lucky the first time.
Whudathunkit?
Those Shakespeare monkeys better get on the stick!
Posted on February 1, 2008 9:05 AM
Arkansas did the same with baboons and they could get lucky with both sexes...

Holden, I too believe various voices and opinions should be heard, that is what makes the blogs interesting. With all due respect, please reread the 1:25 post from Nitpicker. "Polite" is one thing, persistent personal attacks are another thing.
Would you enjoy being 'diagnosed' with mental illness, called a "blithering idiot", told your cerebral capacity is limited, called stupid, ignorant, etc. etc on a DAILY basis Holden? You state his posts are "even coarse"? That is an laughable underestimate.
This is but one month of insults Nitpicker listed, the exact same thing has been going on for years. May I provide a few additional examples:

These are but a small example of attacks directed at me, they are consistently directed at others as well, every single day. I ask again, would you enjoy these responses to your posts on a daily basis Holden?
Mr. Robinson, I would ask that the N&R post it's terms of use on the LTE blog as done previously and enforce them. It would also be appreciated if Mr. Johnson would reply on the Letters to the Editor blog. If he wishes one blogger to persistently attack other bloggers at this level then that is the what we can expect from the LTE blog from now on. If he has objections to these constant personal insults it would be worth noting.
Thank you.

According to John Robinson, Editor, he notified Allen Johnson of concerns regarding the personal attacks by THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE that I posted here and on the Editor’s Log yesterday.
Still, not a single word. The silence speaks VOLUMES!
People have been kicked off of this blog for their crude attacks on other and their hate-filled speech.
One person received this email from Allen Johnson when they were booted:

Yet, a blog bully is allowed to run rampant stating that a fellow blogger's priest is a pedophile.
THE EVIDENCE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!
I'll post it again below.
I'd like to challenge my fellow bloggers to see how many are willing to sign beneath my post to request action against someone who is so obviously "intent on ignoring our taste guidelines".
Whether it is to kick him off or just to condemn those kinds of personal attacks, action is definitely warranted.

neo and Dan drink from the same swill of FoxNews. Poor Dan has no clue how stupid he appears to normal people, but I think neo knows he's off his rocker but not to the actual extent! 1/5/08
Dan attacks the messenger. It is the extent of his cerebral capacity as he is quite limited in that area. 1/5/08
As I've said many times, he's an inch deep and a mile wide. 1/5/08
Tell us "WHY" we should respect and wallow in his excrement as you do 1/5/08
Rather than post your usual drivel, just answer the question. See if you can do that this time.1/5/08
I could never be a Republican, because I would have to hate black people, Mexicans, and gay people
Bottom line is they are mostly like Dan, no substance, just armchair ideology.1/5/08
I just love it when our resident Partisan, Tony Mostschitti comments. He probably goes to church, parties, family gatherings etc, and separates everyone into "LIBERALS" and whatever his idea du jour of "CONSERVATIVES" is. The man has no idea what a joke he is, but rather thinks of himself as the ONLY way.
Like I said, I do love it when he opens his mouth and removes all doubt! 1/5/08
Wow! Like we couldn't have predicted that kind of rubbish coming from you. How about posting your highest level of education, neo? Based on your posts, my guess would be "some high school". Sheesh! 1/3/08
That's because the people you hang around with have no clue. Your small gaggle of friends wouldn't know culture if it bit them on the arse and you are the mirror image of that group. Maybe you can answer the question posed about your highest level of education received?? 1/3/08
So, neo, was the third grade your high water mark?
Or, could it be you are just an armchair bigot, who feels betrayed by the "system" and therefore you blame your failings on others???
Or maybe, just maybe, your alligator mouth got way ahead of your mental faculties??? 1/4/08
Why are you such a coward?1/4/08
you just an armchair critic with an alligator mouth and hummingbird's ass?
Well, it appears 2008 will continue to have the far right wingers yacking like always. 1/1/08

I'll second the motion.
It may just be that Allen IS the liberal-conservative!
Posted on February 1, 2008 10:23 AM
Liberal/conservative, is that similar to moron/idiot? Why even pay attention to one so mentally unbalanced? Don't respond to his lunacy.
As for Bush's deception, the BDS crowd obviously missed the "60 Minutes" interview with the CIA operative who interrogated Saddam for many months. Saddam admitted he had gotten rid of the WMD in the late 90's. He than said, in order to fend off any potential threat from Iran, He continued to let the world think he still had tha weapons. When asked why he stilll kept up the ruse when we were making threats to come after him, he replied that he didn't believe us. I guess he thought Slick Willie was still president! Saddam said he thought there would be a few days of bombing raids (on the Chinese Embassy, or an aspirin factory I guess) and he could live with that.
That's how a president, weak on defense, can cause major problems. Bin Laden attacked us in large part because after the Somalia debacle when Clinton, as Demo-Rats are wont to do, cut and run, and Bin Laden thought we were cowards.
You Bush Derangement Syndrome loons need to have a check up, and soon. There are more than enough things to criticize Bush for, so there is not need to keep inventing things!

If the United States of America did not take this war to the attackers of our nation.....At what point would we have to fight these mindless humaniod killing maniacs from the front doors of our homes?
They hate everyone on this earth that's different than themselves, and they want everything that lives to be killed in the most horrible way, possible.
This is not a war of military gain. This is a war for our very right to live. These slimy low-life bastards of hell will attack this nation, again, if they have any part of a chance.
This is not a choice of any President. It's the American choice.
Fight them in their backyard or fight them in your backyard. CHOOSE!

ToMo,
Good news! I hear BDS is down to about 32% of the population. Sanity seems to be returning but there are a resistant few.
One thing that you didn't seem to notice about the 60 min. interview is that Saddam got rid of the weapons in the late '90s. You're right. He must have thought that Slick Willie was still President.
OBL attacked us because he had an opportunity. Al Quada has hit London & Spain hard since the Iraq invasion (2 of the most stalwart members of the Coalition of the Billing).
Posted on February 1, 2008 11:00 AM
Nit,
Enough already! Why you or anyone else would give a second thought to "personal attacks" from someone you don't even like, much less make a major production out of it, is beyond me. If you gave a rat's butt about TLC's opinion it would be different.
BTW, where was your indignation when people were calling me a whore, a commie, an idiot, stupid, cruel, lazy, insane, deranged, a bitch, questioning my integrity, my morals, my character? This partial list is but the tip of the iceberg.
I don't remember your outrage then. Perhaps you did defend my honor, just not to the degree you have Dan's and just not in print. As I recall, Steve was the only one who consistently did that. And then I was accused of f---ing him! Only people did not use the dashes then.
My point is not to defend TLC. I do not agree with the way he expresses himself when people post things with which he disagrees. That is not my style. Just as I vehemently disagree with all this bickering. I do not enjoy opening up the comments and having to scroll past a bunch of bull. I come here to read and learn something of value.
I'm suggesting that all who disagree with this tug-of-war stop participating in it. If someone attacks you personally and you don't want this to keep snow-balling, do not respond. I know you are aware that TLC is trying to engage you. Why are you humoring him by becoming engaged?
I used to spend hours on this blog defending my position. It brought me nothing but loss of sleep (I would read and post after working 12-13 hours at my real job) and frustration. Then I realized I had absolutely no control over what anyone thought of me or my POV. That is when I stopped responding to attempts to pull me into the gutter to fight. If one agrees with me, fine, if not, fine.
Thank you in advance for reading this with an open mind and a forgiving spirit.

Yvonne,
Nit's intentions are not only to have the liberal conservative reprimanded, but to have the hypocrisy of the n&r brought to light.
If nit had not been so demonstrative in his call for action, nothing would've been done. Allen Johnson has promised to address this today.
The liberal conservative's omnipresence haunts these comments on a minute-by-minute basis, and without a reprimand, it'll never stop.
The squeaking wheel gets Allen's attention...
Posted on February 1, 2008 11:59 AM
Rufus,
Excellent response. It just proves folks can read the same info and see completely opposite meanings. My response was much the same.
I posted in 2003 that Iraq had no WMD. It was just plain old common sense that made me draw that conclusion. If Saddam had them, he sure as heck would not let the US bully him and his country to the point of allowing an attack, the killing of his sons and the loss of his empire.
Bush had his own agenda and ignored all advise to stay out of the ME, even his own father's advise. This bull-headed failure to listen is why we are in Iraq. This is why I say all the blame for our current state of stagnation can be laid squarely on his shoulders. He lied, manipulated and manufactured to start this war. Who else to blame?
I also said, after the 2004 election. that Bush would involve us in another war before he left office, probably with Iran. He has tried to make a case for this. Thank God that 32% is not a majority!
Posted on February 1, 2008 11:59 AM
I wish half of the people pounding their chests in here would just sign up and go fight. Age is not a limit---go work for Haliburton or Blackwater if your butt has not grown too large.
If you have kids and you support permanent war in Iraq, I hope we reinstate the draft. That way, those of us whose children are bearing the brunt of the war can get a break. My kid is on his third tour (2BCT, 82ABN). He has spent 14 months of the last 44 outside of war zones. His 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd birthdays have all been in combat zones. How about a little BACKUP here?
I know we can't just pack up and leave Iraq, but we have already built permanent bases (just now "negotiating" for them). Let's either wind this down appropriately or start the draft so everyone can share. Everyone with a "I Support The Troops" bumper sticker oughta be marching their kids down to the recruiting office on graduation day or signing up themselves. THAT would be support.
How many congresspeople with kids in Iraq? Hint: you can't divide by this number.
Oh and LibCon, try being civil. nitpicker does not always agree with me but since I am civil, so is he and always has been. Same for neocon and so far everyone else here. Not the same for you as you have attacked me a couple of times, as well. Try courtesy, argument and respect it is much better than just being righteous. You seem genuine but a little too ardent.
Posted on February 1, 2008 12:03 PM
Verelse,
May God watch over your son. I pray for a quick and safe return for him and all of his compatriots.
I hope all of us in our back and forth squabbling remember that behind all of these policies that we either support or despise, there are real flesh and blood people that have to live with the consequences whereas most of us get to sit around in our nice safe comfortable homes and pretend we know what we're talking about.
Posted on February 1, 2008 12:31 PM
Yvonne,
I don't think you're cruel....
Posted on February 1, 2008 1:22 PM
Yvonne,
I remember your viewpoint being attacked years ago and even some personal attacks. I think I was one of the few that came to your defense at the time. Then again, that was several years ago so my memory isn't what it used to be.
If you remember, Steve was booted from this blog. Why wasn't TLC? Why wasn't he even warned?
We've always agreed to disagree and I can't remember a time where you personally attacked me. I certainly don't remember personally attacking you 50 times in a month.
My position was not a defense of Dan. If you'll notice, the personal attacks were not just on Dan and Neocon. They were on me, Oak Ridge Runner, LilBean, TonyMo, and others. Basically, anybody he disagreed with most of the time.
I disagree with you more than not when it comes to national politics. But I'm not gonna call you names or infer things about your mental abilities, your education, your priest, your wife, etc.
I'm relieved to see Allen's response.
"If someone attacks you personally and you don't want this to keep snow-balling, do not respond."
That doesn't work with some folks. I've seen people smeared in posts where they didn't even comment.
Have a great weekend.
As I said to Allen, I look forward to the changes.

Vereise,
I will pray for your son. He and the other soldiers have shown incredible bravery. For those supporters of the wars, it is easy to adopt a MacArthur or Patton like stance, when it not your blood or the blood of a relative that is being spilled. It is disheartening to see the roll call of the dead that is shown on the The Newshour program. Most of the dead are in their early 20's, from small towns and they are all fresh faced. I wonder if their deployments were their first visits out of the US. Crime Dog says if we were not fighting the terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, that we would be fighting them here in this country. The idea is so paranoid. Imagine hand to hand combat with a terrorist on the streets of Salt Lake City or Boise? The premise sounds like something that Orson Welles or Steven Seagal would come up with. By my recollection, 19 of the 20 hijackers were Saudis. Why aren't we there? We were there recently. The President asked them to lower the price for a barrel of oil and they said "no." So much is being asked of and taken away from the soldiers.
Footnote: the NY Times ran a series about 121 mentally scarred Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans who upon their return to the US, were accused of committing murders here.

:]
Posted on February 1, 2008 5:17 PM
Yvonne has a wife? :)
I do remember the personal attacks directed towards you Yvonne back in the earlier years. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen them lately, that is a good thing.
You and I disagree on many issues. Correct me if I'm wrong again but I always attempt to treat you with respect when I don't agree with you. Of course we are best buddies when it comes to illegal immigration :)
You are correct in your assertion that Demon Deacon attempts to engage "opposition" with insults and can be ignored. However, you were the target of such attacks in the past and I'm sure you didn't appreciate them. Well many of us are now the same targets on a DAILY basis, it's really getting old.
Verelse, my kids are 6 & 5 so military service isn't an option at the moment. If they choose military service when they grow up I will support and honor that decision.
As for now we have a volunteer military of which your son is a member and a patriot for his service. We may need a draft someday as it seems the threat of Islamic radicalism is growing rather than diminishing. Blame it all on Bush if it makes you feel better, but Islamic radicalism was around pre-Bush and will be around post-Bush.
The next president will deal with this issue throughout his/her 4-8 year term. I'll be very interested to see if Clinton or Obama, if either is elected, will hasten a pullout from Iraq and/or Afghanistan once they are privy to the situation there and how they will handle our nation's security.

Yea Congress had intel - intel the Bush administration gave them. Remember whom CIA works for – also NSA, Military Intell’ - the whole bunch of them. If “we were on the same page ..” it’s because "we" were only shown half the book.

“If the United States of America did not take this war to the attackers of our nation .. “
Agreed, that’s why there was universal support to do Afghanistan. Osama wondered publically why it took 6 months to avenge the 9-11 attacks (we waited until springtime the next year before we went into Afghanistan).
“… these mindless humanoid killing maniacs [that] hate everyone on this earth .. “
Agreed. Keep in mind there were only 3000 of them on 9-11.
Tell me how many there are now.
Tell me why today's count is so much higher.

Given that Daddy Bush – the WWII Hero - had declined to invade Iraq, given that Clinton the Dodger also did .. given that Bush was also a Dodger .. isn’t it reasonable to believe Saddam expected Bush the Puss* to stand down too?
Perhaps you think that FBI guy on ‘60 Minutes was a lying bastard?
==
Bush the Puss* .. he's real brave with other people's kids.
Why weren't (AREN'T - it's not to late) the Twins ever sent to Iraq to Entertain The Troops ala as Bob Hope? How many times has anyone from the White House been there? I can think of twice - minutes each time? (I really don't know - but even Nixon visited South Vietnam five times).

" ...my kids are 6 & 5 .. if they choose military service when they grow up I will support and honor that decision."
That's a far cry from "These slimy low-life bastards of hell will attack this nation .. this is not a choice .. " .... etc and all that stuff. If you really believe that, then you should raise them to join and fight the bastards - set an example, join yourself.
==
" ... it seems the threat of Islamic radicalism is growing rather than diminishing. Blame it all on Bush if it makes you feel better, but Islamic radicalism was around pre-Bush and will be around post-Bush".
See above. Better yet, and in dire fear of critizism from Neocon - read
"The Looming Tower"
"Imperial Hubris"
"The Assassin's Gate"
"The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell"
... all contermporary histories of Iraq, none with "bad" data (at least that I've been able to find out about - here's you're opening Neo).

These days, I think every one in America is relatively "privy to the situation" in Iraq and Afghanistan. Perhaps that's arrogance on my part - but I sense it's about 90% true. The problem is there are different ideas about how to handle "the situation" ..
In 2004 when "the situation"was obviously going badly, we heard "Stay the Course" - and "if you don't vote Bush / Cheney back into office, we'll be attacked!!!!" Have you ever read the Osama message - posted right before the 2004 elections - the one we were not allowed to hear because it contained ""secret messages" to Terrorist Cells RIGHT HERE IN THE USA!!! HELP -- OMG. What a bunch of political crap .. but it got the man re-elected. Ain't American lucky!
In 2005 when "the situation" was even MORE obviously .. we still heard "Stay the Course" but now you were a TRAITOR if you dared to speak out. In 2006 we heard not only "Stay the Course", but how Rummy was a National Hero for all his great work. A day later Rummy was kicked out.
Then we heard how the Iraqi Study Group's plan was just a bunch of crap .. until a few months later when they started to implement it .. quietly .. and WHAL:LAA .. things are going much better. We even talked directly with North Korea and Syria and all those other evil bastards.
I'm tired of typing. What a bunch of poop that has been fed to America. I hope you are sated.

"That's a far cry from "These slimy low-life bastards of hell will attack this nation .. this is not a choice .. " .... etc and all that stuff. If you really believe that, then you should raise them to join and fight the bastards - set an example, join yourself."
Not my words but I agree, radical Islamists are slimy low-life bastards and they are intent on attacking this nation again.
I will raise my kids as I see fit, I have already explained 9/11 to my 6 year old son in simple terms: Some evil (he understands the word) people flew big jet planes into buildings in NYC and DC (he knows where those are and has been to DC) and almost 3000 people died. We then went to a country called Afghanistan where many of these evil people were to keep them from doing this again.
Didn't get into Islam, too complicated for a 6 year old.
As for myself, at almost 45 I don't think I can join the military. I'm likely not qualified to work for Halliburton or Blackwater either.

"I will raise my kids as I see fit ... "
Fine. I'm sure you're a great dad, and I mean that sincerely, but for some reason, the rest of your post seems condescending. I can't lay hands on it, but suspect verelse will find little comfort.

btw - you may have been young enough in 2006 to join. On June 22, 2006, the Army has raised the enlistment age to 42.
“Experience has shown that older recruits who can meet the physical demands of Army service generally make excellent Soldiers. They are mature, motivated, loyal and patriotic, and bring with them a wealth of skills and experience to our Army .. [this] will allow .. the opportunity to serve the nation now .."
