Working students need help from government
Adult working students are not given a fair chance at an education. The majority of adult students attending college work full time and many have children and family obligations. As a working student, I have only been offered financial aid in the form of student loans, which require repayment. Ten percent of UNCG's student enrollment is adult students.
Throughout my college career, I have come in contact with students privileged enough to not need to work while attending school. Most, however, do not and will not have that opportunity.
I have also noticed that certain minorities often get offered financial aid that doesn't require repayment. This seems unfair to non-minorities.
If the government would offer more funding to students, there would be more adults attending college. It appears that those of us who do not fall into one of the previously mentioned categories are forced to work full time while incurring debt in order to support ourselves through college
.
Our legislators should take a hard look at students who put themselves through school and how much debt they incur while doing so.

This letter is absolutely astounding in it's revelation of our contemporary generation of college students. I read it in the print N&R at the kitchen table and nearly dropped my cereal on the floor.
"As a working student, I have only been offered financial aid in the form of student loans, which require repayment."
Yep...uh huh....that would be the definition of a loan. You borrow money and then pay it back. Imagine that.
Let me get this straight Stacie, the govt. is supposed to give everyone free money for their college education? Where does this money come from? How about your food, transportation, shelter, books, clothing and other needs during your education. Since you don't want to be "forced to work full time" perhaps the govt. should offer these free as well. That way you can focus only on your education.
Our American experiment has failed as Neo mentioned earlier. People want the school system to tell them when to drive or not, now Stacie here is repulsed by the idea of borrowing money for her education and actually paying it back.

"Our legislators should take a hard look at students who put themselves through school and how much debt they incur while doing so."
How about our legislators taking a "hard look" at my power bill, my grocery bill, and while they're at it, I'd like to upgrade my satellite system. Oh, and I still want that new Tahoe, but every time I approach a salesperson about it, they always come up with these annoying 'loan contracts'... expecting me to sign them. What's up with that?
Stacie, it's victims like you that created the welfare state which has bankrupted the country.

Dan , Neocon right on the money. I worked a full time job and a part time job and went to school. My wife worked and raised our two children. So Stacie excuse me if I do not give a green apple, about you expecting something for nothing. Seems I heard JFK say ask not would the country can do for you, but what you can do for your country! And those privileged students, you may find that these students came from folks that worked to get where they are. Sadly the word work as been replaced by GIMMIE.

Dan,
Tread lightly...she is a student at YOUR alma mater.

I'm going to be branded a sexist for even mentioning this, but I've never been one to care what people think. When I was in school, I saw literally thousands of scholarships... for women. Never did I see any scholarships specifically for men. Ms. Hazelwood already has plenty of free money. She just needs to know where to look for it.
Like TDBB, I worked several jobs while in school and used Federal Stafford loans. It was hard work, but I think having to do it this way made me appreciate it more. Folks in this generation seem to want everything handed to them. I suppose they'll never know the satisfaction of working hard to achieve their dreams.

When i gradyeated fourth grade, my pa told me i could either mow for a livin or pick up cans by the side of the road. Now i kan't spect the government to by me a new snapper mower, i just gotta come up with a few more hundered thousand cans to get my own.
ya'll wave when you go by...

I worked the entire time I was in school. I still had time to study and do quite well.
Was it easy? No, it wasn't. But work helped me stay focused and it also helped me decide what things I liked and didn't like in the area of employment.
It also gave me a sense of accomplishment.
It took me about a year longer, but when I graduated, I had not one penny in student debt.
Hard work won't hurt you. Instead of Stacie expecting taxpayers to make her college life a breeze, she needs to buckle down, work her butt off, and prove something to herself.
What's hilarious to me is that she will insinuate that the financial aid process is giving hand-outs to blacks but that it's okay for her to get them.
"I have also noticed that certain minorities often get offered financial aid that doesn't require repayment"
I'm not saying that's incorrect but it's my understanding that much of that aid does require repayment. It just never gets paid back and many times the student never gets a degree.
The government is tightening those rules, however.

According to John Robinson, Editor, he notified Allen Johnson of concerns regarding the personal attacks by THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE that I posted here and on the Editor’s Log yesterday.
Still, not a single word. The silence speaks VOLUMES!
People have been kicked off of this blog for their crude attacks on other and their hate-filled speech.
One person received this email from Allen Johnson when they were booted:
"As you seem intent on ignoring our taste guidelines, we are banning you from commenting on our letters blog"

Yet, a blog bully is allowed to run rampant stating that a fellow blogger's priest is a pedophile.
THE EVIDENCE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!
I'll post it again below.
I'd like to challenge my fellow bloggers to see how many are willing to sign beneath my post to request action against someone who is so obviously "intent on ignoring our taste guidelines".
Whether it is to kick him off or just to condemn those kinds of personal attacks, action is definitely warranted.

Dan attacks the messenger. It is the extent of his cerebral capacity as he is quite limited in that area. 1/5/08
As I've said many times, he's an inch deep and a mile wide. 1/5/08
Tell us "WHY" we should respect and wallow in his excrement as you do 1/5/08
Rather than post your usual drivel, just answer the question. See if you can do that this time.1/5/08
I could never be a Republican, because I would have to hate black people, Mexicans, and gay people
Bottom line is they are mostly like Dan, no substance, just armchair ideology.1/5/08
I just love it when our resident Partisan, Tony Mostschitti comments. He probably goes to church, parties, family gatherings etc, and separates everyone into "LIBERALS" and whatever his idea du jour of "CONSERVATIVES" is. The man has no idea what a joke he is, but rather thinks of himself as the ONLY way.
Like I said, I do love it when he opens his mouth and removes all doubt! 1/5/08
Wow! Like we couldn't have predicted that kind of rubbish coming from you. How about posting your highest level of education, neo? Based on your posts, my guess would be "some high school". Sheesh! 1/3/08
That's because the people you hang around with have no clue. Your small gaggle of friends wouldn't know culture if it bit them on the arse and you are the mirror image of that group. Maybe you can answer the question posed about your highest level of education received?? 1/3/08
So, neo, was the third grade your high water mark?
Or, could it be you are just an armchair bigot, who feels betrayed by the "system" and therefore you blame your failings on others???
Or maybe, just maybe, your alligator mouth got way ahead of your mental faculties??? 1/4/08
Why are you such a coward?1/4/08
you just an armchair critic with an alligator mouth and hummingbird's ass?
Well, it appears 2008 will continue to have the far right wingers yacking like always. 1/1/08

Nit, DD spouts the PC talking points that are the meat of the N&R agenda.
These editors get paid to push their point then deflect and dismiss any criticisms directed that way. A "maybe we were wrong" is the closest I've ever seen them admit to being imperfect, with the exception being retractions of irrefutable, inaccurate facts in articles when they are challenged.

Bishop,
I remember being called a sexist also, for my defense of a woman's right to make her own decision regarding her own body. Life goes on and we are not hindered by what others think, especially when we are right (smile).
Since I was the recipient of federal aid for my education, I feel qualified to offer a different POV than most of you have posted. As most of you know, I found myself, at age 28, out of a job (my plant closed), divorced and raising three sons. I had no parents, grandparents or husband to help me. The CETA program was in effect then so I applied. (This program was open to men also, Bishop.)
I worked a public job and went to nursing school while struggling to raise my sons with solid values. For every hour I was in school, I received minimum wage. CETA also paid for my textbooks and my mileage back and forth for clinical (I think 32 cents/mile).
The help I received did not come close to making ends meet. That's the reason I also worked a public job. But that small hand up made the difference between me becoming a real good taxpayer and a permanent drain on the taxpayer. The investment the government made in me has been paid back many fold. A private investor could hope to make such a profit!
My kids wore clothes from the thrift stores. I made menus and shopped, sticking to my list. We did without frills and had skimpy Christmases. That was about thirty years ago and I can't see where it hurt us.
My point is, unless you have walked a mile in someone else's shoes, don't judge them. Government aid is not always a negative, especially when there are motivated individuals. And it sounds like the letter writer is motivated. She just needs a hand up. Frankly, if we can hand all this money to illegals, why can't we make an investment in our adult citizens?

"My kids wore clothes from the thrift stores. I made menus and shopped, sticking to my list. We did without frills and had skimpy Christmases. That was about thirty years ago...."
For me, that's right now, girl.
Been there and still doing that. Not eligible for any aid from the government, though.
Yvonne, you succeeded in the system as it was. Just goes to show how tough and strong you are. You are right that sometimes the system is designed to keep people down. However, people don't have to give into it. They do have a choice. And sometimes, self-respect is worth putting in the extra effort. Just my opinion.
Posted on February 1, 2008 2:12 PM
Yvonne,
"The CETA program was in effect then so I applied. (This program was open to men also, Bishop.)"
I never said there were no programs that men could apply for. What I said was: Never did I see any scholarships ***specifically*** for men.
There are thousands of women ***only*** scholarships that exist. Men aren't even given a shot at these funds. While there may now be a handful of scholarships that cater to men, their numbers pale in comparison; and usually women can apply for the aid as well.
Posted on February 1, 2008 2:45 PM
... Oh, and when I'm told that I don't have the "privilege" of choosing whether my child is born or not, yet am expected to cover every red cent of his/her development I'd say that's a bit sexist. Perhaps you should take some of your own advice and walk a mile in someone else's shoes before passing judgment.
Posted on February 1, 2008 8:44 PM
I don't recall making a statement like that Bishop. But whatever.
You sound bitter. I hope a better day will come to you soon. This is a sincere wish for you.
Posted on February 2, 2008 3:42 AM
You must have a selective memory. If pointing out that father's have responsibilities yet no rights makes me bitter so be it.
If pointing out that; it is somehow politically correct to have a female only scholarship but male only scholarships are sexist; makes me bitter, so be it.
It blows my mind the number of women who will cry sexism, yet have no problem when men's rights get trampled.
