Is decline of religion related to unjust war?

"We're losing our religion, survey says," it's reported in the News & Record (Feb. 26), and I'm wondering if there's any relation between this loss and the 87 percent of all white U.S. evangelical Christians who reportedly supported President Bush's decision to go to war against Iraq (for no readily apparent reason) in 2003 and those on your editorial page even today who support the torture of unindicted prisoners not long ago presumed to be innocent until found guilty by a jury of their peers.

Religion lost, indeed. And what kind of personal faith in what kind of mysterious deity or higher power has ensued?

The Rev. Charles M. Hawes
Greensboro

The long run-on sentence has confused me. What exactly is he saying?

I think he means that Evangelicals are the problem and reason for Bush love, and thus losing religion is a good thing. Not sure, since he apparently is a reverend.

I will be in church tomorrow and I have no love for Bush. My opinion is we no longer have family values. Another thing I think is that churches are no longer preaching the word of god. You will also note that this letter is not about religion its about bashing Bush. Also notice that he worried about unindicted prisoners, wonder where the hell he was at in the Duke case?

Dog, what exactly are "family values"? I hear that term all the time and wonder what it means to you. Our church preaches the teachings of Jesus. What do you consider the word of God?

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I'm not quite sure what one's personal faith in God has to do with a president or any human for that matter. You are correct dog, it's simply another Bush bashing letter with a different twist.

I would imagine family values means something different for each family Carol. For our family it means teaching our children to love God, love of our country, respect, kindness to others, discipline, and politeness to name a few. It also means attempting to shield them from the garbage on TV, movies, music, and the internet.

"George Bush sucks...praise the Lord".

Maybe it's your sermons that are driving them away, Reverend Charles M. Hawes.

Perhaps you would feel more comfortable over at the NG 'friends'?

I agree with you, Dan. That is what it means to me.

I thought this war was about religion! It's about a religion that believes all other religions do not have a right to exist. That all other religions must be exterminated from the face of the Earth.

And, I have learned that the term "family values" mean different thing to different families.

And, I've also learned that GOD is not hiding in a church. The warm and loving spirit of GOD exist in your heart. Unless you personaly chase GOD away.

Churches are areas for social behavior and social events. The Bible is preached in most churches. But, the preaching of the Bible are preached in each churches indoctrines.

And, why do so many people bash Bush? The president can not perform a bowl movement without a vote and support from the Congress and the Senate. The power of the President is balanced by these huge voting government bodies.

This is not Bush's war! This is a war for America's survival and pretty much survival of the rest of the world. Survival from a large army of hatefilled, violent predators that want everyone that does not worship their Prophet in the exact same manner as they do to be murdered. The Dog's outa here.

I think that the reverend is saying that you can't torture prisoners until they are indicted and found guilty. I guess it's okay then?

What happened to the News-Record's standards for letters to the editor? They usually rewrite your letters, so that they can be comprehended. One sentence with 83 words by my count. Where did he get his education, Guilford Country Schools?

that 'church' would be the new garden friends meeting correct?...
'preaching the teachings' aint gonna get 'er done and that is one of the cult attributes of the NGFM...

take a guy like JDR who once replied to me that he is attracted to and even further, educates himself to be a 'better person' with the teachings of Jesus, but he is not drawn in the least to Jesus as his lord and saviour...just to the teachings of the mortal man Jesus...

are NGFs born again? do those who come and hear the 'preaching of the teaching' of Jesus ever hear the teaching of the requirement to be born again?

also, is there preaching about Heaven and Hell at NGFM?

please dont reply that I should come and hear for myself....i am sincere in those questions and am only interested in your reply.

Shalom

Carol Dunn, I answered your question yesterday, for some reason it disappeared, I will try again. Family values to me is respect for your elders. How many times today have you heard children cussing their parents. That you are raised to moral and written laws. Stealing and lying are bad. I was raised in a mining town, we never locked doors ( your neighbor might need a cup of sugar while you were away) try that now. You as a family try to improve your life. After I left the army to get married, I worked two jobs and went to school at night, my wife worked and raised 2 children. Yet we found time to be involved in their life's. We taught them to work, and accept responsibility, yes they failed many times, we gave them love, but they were required to straighten up their own mess. So I guess to me that what family is all about, work, play ,and pray together. I only go to churches that use the King James bible, saying that , I do not down anyone beliefs.

Dan thanks, I went back and re read some post. We slammed the door on our grandchildren this week. We cancelled all movie channels, no more computer games, unless we installed them. Yes they screamed, and fussed. (tough) . One of them told me its not fair, I told him life is not fair. Get use to it.

I'm with you Dog. How fortunate we both were to have good parents. It makes us try to be good parents also. It just bothers me when politicians throw "family values" into their campaigns. Government can't and shouldn't determine family values.

While I am flattered to be thought a member of New Garden, that is not the case. I have never attended a worship service there, so I cannot tell you what they preach. I do know many wonderful people there and applaud their stands on the war and the rights of all God's children.

Reverend Hawes is one heck of a person and a tremendous religious figure. From Doggie and Dan's posts, they miss the point entirely. In fact they play right into Hawes' argument. Dan has consistently carried water for the Bush administration, (witness his quickness to call this "another Bush bashing letter) while pontificating his own "family values".
Dan, how do you explain to your children that the United States of America, for the first time in its over two hundred year history, has turned its back on civility and humane treatment of prisoners?
How do you explain to them that it is okay to spend $18 million dollars EVERY single hour of every single day to support a war that has no purpose and has killed an estimated 100,000 innocent Iraqi citizens, some of which are children like yours?

Frankly, I'd rather explain to them about a President cheating on his wife with an intern than explain to them how this President has turned our country into something our founding fathers fought to never ever have to face!

Yap all you want about YOUR "family values", but it rings hollow when you can't even address the issues in the letter. I don't know why expect you to even understand!
