Obama team also playing the race card
Although Barack Obama "decries" the way race is dividing the Democratic primary, his own (white) strategist, David Axelrod, has been fanning the flames by misquoting, de-contextualizing and deliberately misinterpreting statements by Hillary Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro and Bill Clinton to suggest they are racist. Even after these suggestions are debunked by media critics, they continue to circulate and cause real harm.
It is devastating to see professional spinners run roughshod over people who have worked so hard to heal the divisions of race in America, and it is irresponsible of the media to repeat negative interpretations without first going to the original source to get the exact quotation and complete context of controversial statements.
Ferraro, for example, never said that Sen. Obama is "lucky to be black," but rather said, in response to a question, that he is "lucky to be who he is." "Who (Obama) is" -- his identity -- is complex: he is male, biracial, was raised in multiethnic Hawaii by his white mother and grandparents, and has an Ivy League education.
Some folks have felt that he "transcends race" because of "who he is." But you can't transcend race and spin it at the same time.

Hate to break it to you, Elizabeth, but supporting government sponsored racist programs like affirmative action doesn't go very far "to heal the divisions of race in America". It only serves to keep the race pimps in business.

Neo,
You have to remember why affirmative action came into being. Once upon a time (not too long ago) blacks didn't have access to a lot of paths to success. AA was one metric used to track & correct that situation. I believe those days are largely past us thanks partially to AA. AA needs to be used as a metric and only a corrective of last resort. Yes there are people that pimp for racial division in this country just like there are folks that pimp for Halliburton. The goal of a society that has open opportunities for all peoples is a good one and AA has been an important tool for moving us in that direction. Does it need to be rethought, probably. Thrown out, probably not.

neo,
Your comments, once again, are at the least insensitive and probably the result of being reared by and among racists. You foment hate, vitriole and divisivness on every post.
Your hate for people of color is palpable and you seem to find your voice everytime someone seems to share your base opinions. I note that you did not post on the Bill Beerman letter before this one--why? Was it because that letter was not only well thought out, but very centrist in nature? My guess is that you knew how foolish you would look when compared to Mr. Beerman's letter.
While many may voice their opinions and many disagree with one another, only you and "nitpicker" rise to the level of overt racism. Nitpicker is gone, and you must feel empowered in his absence to spew your hate filled venom.
As a white male, who has lived his entire life in the South, I can honestly say that you are dispicable in your thoughts and words. Your views do not represent America, rather they represent what is wrong with America. You give ALL white Southerners a bad name and you show yourself to be a vile human being. Please go away and take your hate to the Rhino Times, or just watch FoxNews instead of posting. For those of us who not only love America, but love Americans too, I beg of you.
Serious here, neo. Very serious. An opinion is one thing, but to spew racist venom unapologetically should have you banned from this site.

"AA has been an important tool for moving us in that direction. Does it need to be rethought, probably. Thrown out, probably not."
This sounds more like an apology for the science of victimology than the belief in equal opportunity. The irony with programs like Affirmative Action, is that they are not "equal opportunity" programs at all. They are, by all definitions, "equal outcome" programs.
Affirmative Action, and programs like it are little more than Marxist socialism at work, lifting up one or more classes of people at the expense of another. This is the very reason that movements like civil rights, feminism, and recently the men's movement will all turn out the same way. While they are necessary in the beginning, nobody knows when to stop.
As sure as civil-rights racists and radical feminists do not know when to call it quits; radicals of the men's movement will undoubtedly become skilled victimologists as well. They will surely seek the same "protected" status as all the other "victims" of our culture, and demand the same socialist intervention.
Neocon is right, government sponsored racism and sexism is not the way to unite people. As long as citizens of this country want to define themselves with hyphenated names and *isms we will always be a country divided.

That sounds somewhat like something I've read here before.

That coming from Demon Deacon, who has already received a warning from the N&R to clean up their act or be banished for eternity, is hilarious.

Remember when this line was added to each letter? Right after you received your warning Demon Deacon.

"But you can't transcend race and spin it at the same time."
Sure you can Elizabeth. After this story broke, Obama first denied hearing any of "Rev." (I use the term loosely) Wright's fiery hate filled statements. He wasn't present when any of this trash was uttered. Yeah right.
Later he spun it into yet another incantatory speech for the swooning masses (that's what he does best), tagged his own grandmother and, in a later interview referred to her as a "typical white person".
Personally I don't think Obama despises his country and white people as does his pastor. However he made his own bed in associating with this guy for 20 years It may cost him dearly as he spins his way through it, yet his oratory skills may bail him out.

Dan's right: it's proving pretty easy for Obama to simultaneously spin and transcend race--at least to the mainstream press. I'm not sure it plays so well in Peoria: certainly there has been a racial shift recently (whites toward Clinton, blacks toward Obama). And let's face it, anybody who can drive the Clintons insane can't be all bad.

Dan says,
"That coming from Demon Deacon, who has already received a warning from the N&R to clean up their act or be banished for eternity, is hilarious."
News to me! Guess FoxNews channel carried that story too.

" And let's face it, anybody who can drive the Clintons insane can't be all bad."
That's a good point Brian. It's fun to watch the Clintons squirm.
"News to me!"
Selective memory does have it's good points, one can live happily in their own world devoid of facts.
Ask any of the other regulars, you were admonished and put on probation.
Don't think your admonishment was worthy of cable news, local news, or even a corner greasy spoon newsletter Demon Deacon, Allen Johnson's warning was more than sufficient in your case. It must be difficult to hold back.

Why is anyone who disagrees with you always a 'racist', TL Canadianette? For some reason, this seems to be a very touchy subject for you. You have black in-laws, or perhaps your daughter is dating an African-American? No? Then it must be just sucking up to the powers that be who control this blog. This is the only logical explanation. If you have a better one...enlighten me.
You do-gooder, touchy, feely liberals have created an entire class of 'victims' with your government sponsored racist programs like AA. Must really be a great confidence builder for a person of color to get picked for a particular position after several white people have been passed over because they have government quotas to meet.
As for you calling me a racist, that's what liberals come up with when the truth about this subject is laid out for them. They can't justify the government mandating someone be hired based solely on the color of their skin, so anyone who questions this gets a tongue stuck out at them and called a 'racist'.
I really don't care what anyone thinks of me, but YOUR opinion of me means about as much to me as what my dog left behind on our last walk.
Oh, and as your being a 'white male'...we have it on pretty good authority this is not the case.
Rufus,
Do you liberals think minorities so inept and incapable of caring for themselves that they need an edge in the job market?....I don't. I think they're perfectly capable of achieving their goals without you liberals leading them around by the nose and telling them they need SOMEBODY to look out for their best interests because, apparently they cannot.
There is no greater insult.

"Why is anyone who disagrees with you always a 'racist', TL Canadianette?"
neo, it doesn't bother me when someone disagrees with me, but you are one anger filled human being. I not only disagree with you, I find your presence on these threads offensive, vulgar, and full of hate. While I disagree with many who post here, they do not spew hatred toward people of color as you do.
-------------------------------------------------
Dan, you must have "cried to the paper" and were placated. Otherwise, I have no idea what you are talking about. Happy Easter! :)

"Why is anyone who disagrees with you always a 'racist', TL Canadianette?"
Don't limit it to racist Neo:
"Denzien,
He ('ol Dan) does not read, and is a homophobe of the worst kind--
Posted by: DemonDeacon at November 25, 2006 10:54 AM"
If you disagree with the "progressive" proponents of "tolerance" you are labelled a racist, homophobe, misogynist, Neanderthal, etc, etc, you name it. Not too tolerant. It's playbook, much easier than actually refuting an argument. Unfortunately even the normally most respectable Carol Dunn succumbed to the same tactic this week in stating that many people just can't support a black man for president. Not her exact words, but the same meaning nonetheless.
Your point to Rufus rings clear. It is insulting to tell black people, or anyone else for that matter, that they need special privileges for because they are unable to take care of themselves and it helps a quota.
Good Lord I work with so many different people as clients, including many very intelligent black people who started their own successful companies with good old fashioned entrepreneurship rather than dependence upon quotas.

Just to refresh your memory Demon Deacon, from Allen Johnson's blog:
http://blog.news-record.com/staff/outloud/archives/2008/02/throwing_cyberm.shtml#more
I can't take credit for this jewel Demon Deacon. Nitpicker was the man. He compiled your numerous insults just for January as you can read in the post. Only one months worth!!
Then someone named Billy Hamilton asked the following question and Johnson replied:
Billy Hamilton said:
So, since Liberal Conservative, previously posting as Demon Deacon, is a repeat offender (many, many times for a long, long time), are you going to ban him/her or not? You haven't said.
Posted on February 3, 2008 9:29 AM
Allen Johnson said:
No. I'll do as I've done with all others and issue a warning first.
If the off-color commenting continues, yes, he/she will be banned.
As always, please alert us in such cases among any commenters and we'll look into it. Thanks.
Posted on February 4, 2008 10:25 AM
Does that refresh your memory Demon Deacon? Glad to be of service. Happy Easter as well.
Posted on March 22, 2008 10:27 PM
PS, I'd love to see you spin the Johnson link.
Posted on March 22, 2008 10:32 PM
No answers, no explanations...just more "you are a racist spewing hate" babble and drool.
Are we there yet?...
"There" being the point where TL Canadianette "refuses to fight an unarmed man" and tucks tail an...er uh...leaves us with a link to the Huffington Post or Daily Koz.
Posted on March 23, 2008 9:07 AM
Dan,
You expose yourself and still have no clue. Where is nitpicker today? I'm right here. Happy Easter! : )
Posted on March 23, 2008 9:10 AM
oxymoron, you said :
it doesn't bother me when someone disagrees with me.
If this is true, why do you always put them down.
For example you refer to me as an racist, but mostly you call me ingorant.
You always have nothing but negative comments on anyone that does not agree with you.
Also, I too remember the rebuke for your attacks on this blog. You seem to be the only one who doesn't recall this.
One more thing, please, do not presume to speak for me as an white southerner. I am quite able to do so for myself.
Posted on March 23, 2008 10:40 AM
You have no clue Demon Deacon, this might jog your memory from Allen Johnson. In fact you are mentioned personally.
What would your mothers think?
Some of you have complained about crude comments on this blog and have provided some examples in particular from the poster, The Liberal Conservative.
I'm not sure I would classify all of his recent comments as objectionable, but many clearly are.
He is not alone. I continue to be amazed at how the Web seems to prick some of our baser instincts.
And, try as we might, we continue to have trouble convincing some people that adults who behave like children do little to enrich civil discussion on the blogs.
In one case, we traced a series of offensive comments to a teenager who had assumed his parents' sign-on during summer vacation from school.
In another a poster threatened to blow up the civil rights museum and made himself the object of an SBI iinvestigaton. (He publicly apologized on my blog.)
In still other cases, it appears that grown-ups seem somehow emboldened by the Internet to throw mud and insults.
We try to keep an eye on all of the comments but it's hard to do around the clock on several threads per day, seven days a week.
Please behave. Please remember that name-calling does not substitute for a logical argument, nor is it witty or entertaining.
.
Please remember that you don't flatter yourself -- that such comments are the blogger's equivalent of saying something about somebody's mama because he's at a loss for anything substantive to say.
And please report objectionable comments and we'll delete them as soon as possible.
In the case of repeat offenders, we will ban them from commenting altogether.
PS. No, I am not The Liberal Conservative.
.
