Aren’t Americans still free to seek new employment?

The last time I checked, Americans were free to be employed by anyone who wanted to hire them. Imagine my surprise to find out that John Cawthron, TIMCO CEO, seems to think otherwise.

I understand that Mr. Cawthron is upset about the exodus of his highly trained engineers, but for the News & Record to cover this in a front-page, above-the-fold story (April 25) is ludicrous. What’s next? A Burger King employee who decided McDonald’s offered better wages and benefits?

There is nothing illegal about hiring someone who is working for another company. It happens daily. That’s how business works. Does TIMCO hire all of its employees fresh out of college? I’m fairly certain that one of the largest employers in Guilford County hires people who are, in fact, working elsewhere during their job search. Mr. Cawthron himself has worked for several different companies.

I guess I just don’t get it. Where’s the “news” part of this story?

Technically there could be. It depends on if there was an NDA that was signed, and what exactly was in that NDA.

Mr. Cawthorn probably treats his employees to the same maniacal rants that he demonstrated in his “them or me” extortion letter to the citizens of Greensboro. It is no wonder that his best employees are jumping to work for someone a little more mentally stable.

I feel for Mr. Cawthron. However, I imagine he will rue the day he publicly threatened to take Honda Aircraft to court for hiring TIMCO employees.

Some day, a TIMCO employee will be turned down for a better job at Honda and will call in the NLRB to file a grievance against TIMCO for intimidating other potential employers with lawsuits. Then the fat will be in the fire.

Just wait til McDonald's and Wendy's hear about this . . .

Isn't there other things to report on?

Jennifer,

That's not a fair comparison.

If McDonald's is getting huge tax incentives and savings from our local and state government and Burger King isn't, then that leaves Burger King less cash to offer new hires.

Does that sound fair? Let's consider that Burger King had been operating and providing jobs for the area for 20 years and McDonald's has just opened it's first store.
