Living in different times

In reply to Paul Adams’ letter (April 18): Times are different now than in 1600. There are too many people in this country. Our resources are being used up fast.

Illegals are breaking the law, and their free services should be taken away so they will leave. In 1600, immigrants worked and learned English.

I am a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokees.

In 1600, the immigrants already knew English ... and did not bother learn the native languages, including Cherokee.

Unfortunately, the Cherokee never asked for an I-9 form, and not only accommodated the English speakers, they enabled the immigrants to survice. We all know where the Cherokee ended up .. and the Jeopardy answer is" "Not on Capital Hill"

Hum, JDR seems to be adamant pro-illegal immigrant today reading these lte's. He doesn't want any rigorous enforcement. Perhaps, he should go down and visit the border for a few days and he might have a different view of it.

Mass immigration from Europe and other parts of the world didn't start until much later and many of those folks did not come from English speaking countries. Yet, they all manage to speak something close to English now.

We need to make sure that we encourage our modern immigrants to also adopt English as their first language. It can't happen overnight but we do need to make English the official language of the United States and not go the way of the Canadians. Printing everything in dual languages does not encourage learning English. Then again, controlled immigration would not tax our resources like the Taco Bell (Run for the Border) immigration we now have.

Just my opinion of course.

How you reached that conclusion my silly [but accurate] remark is beyond me, ORR. Since you excel in follow-up I'll await your visionary response.

James,
I see you're still wating! He's too busy out there raising money for the Jeremiah Wright ad, so it can air in North Carolina.
