Publish only good stuff Leonard Pitts writes
My! How refreshing to read Leonard Pitts' column on April 14 involving corporate branding of professional sports stadiums. Finally I could actually read his column in its entirety. Finally he made sense. Finally he championed a valid cause and backed it up professionally.
Why did I enjoy it so? Because, for once, he didn't spend his time whining and spinning trivial issues into racially motivated tirades.
I'm a white conservative Republican, and I hold no bias toward those of other persuasions. I will listen to arguments from either side of the political spectrum, so far as the debate remains professional. Therefore, I don't watch the slugfests Fox News airs, nor do I listen to children like Bill O'Reilly or (normally) read Pitts' boo-hoo sessions where he blames racism as an underlying cause for every sociological problem.
I understand racism is real, and that is sad. But to provide a balanced point of view while frequently printing the words of a man with an obvious chip on his shoulder is an oxymoron.
Please, News & Record, filter Pitts' columns and only print the ones that meet the caliber of his column April 14.

Mr. Oklesh, I am in agreement with you regarding the general tenor of Mr. Pitts' columns.
However, your cure ... asking the News & Record to filter the columns and print only the suitable ones ... is worse than the disease.
The N&R editors would most likely choose the WRONG ones to print if their syndication agreement would allow it. And if they DID manage to pick the ones you find valid, you would eventually begin to think of Pitts as a REASONABLE man rather than the "whining and spinning ... chip on his shoulder" writer that you know and loathe.
Let Mr. Pitts continue along. He reveals his "bitter" self better than could be managed by the N&R staff.

I read Pitts columns occasionally. Eli is correct, sometimes he can write some jewels, however the majority of his columns are fixated on race. You are correct too Jack, neither the N&R nor any newspaper should filter a column.
O'Reilly interviewed Jesse Jackson Jr. last night. The interview was focused on politics of course. Mr. Jackson Jr. supports Obama yet didn't once bring up racism, he was very impressive.
Speaking of politics, there are some really good political LTEs in the print N&R section today. Alas, the N&R has taken it upon itself to censure these letters from the blog.

Strange that they would censor political LTE's.
Isn't that half of what we see here anyway?
What are they worried about?

I find it odd that you can respect and enjoy Pitts' column when he writes something with which you agree but when he makes you uncomfortable then he is whining and spinning. I agree with you that it is far better conversation and more informative when discussions can be kept on what you call a professional level. Much better for a conversation to generate light rather than heat. Do you not think it rather strange that a columnist who can right such a professional column would spend most of his time whining and spinning?
I have found Pitts columns on race to be eloquent and perceptive. He has the ability to help readers of far different backgrounds and experience to walk a mile in another's shoes. That is a gift.

Dan, as you point out, I've noticed recently that some LttEs are missing from this forum. Are they all political in nature? To what end would the N&R editors publish letters in the print media, but leave them out here?

Jack, that would be a good question for Allen Johnson.
There were three goodies in today's paper, all political in nature:
1) Obama will be the right leader at the right time.
2) The winning ticket: :Clinton and Obama.
3) Democrats beginning vile attacks on McCain.
I'll post this in his blog and see what the response is.

Just flew in from a trip and laughed my arse off at this sentence:
"I'm a white conservative Republican, and I hold no bias toward those of other persuasions."
Talk about oxymorons!!

"Talk about oxymorons!!"
Yeah that sure brought back memories:
THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE said:
"I could never be a Republican, because I would have to hate black people, Mexicans, and gay people."

You wouldn't believe it, we went to a Mexican restaurant tonight and there were Mexicans there!! Speaking Spanish!!!
Gotta go back to being bitter and clinging to my guns, religion and antipathy towards those who are different.

Danny,
You make the matrix of my comments manifest! Thank you!

Today's 'conservative' Republican quote of the day comes from a HERO of the "conservative" movement, Jesse Helms.
Jesse once called UNC, 'the university of negroes and communists'.
Did he EVER apologize for it? Nope.

From reading posts from our little "conservative" Dan, it appears his brand of "conservatism" is nothing new to this state. Oh, but just like Jesse, we'll hear about being a "Christian". Too dang funny for words! : )
Dan, your comments prove, the more things change, the more they remain the same.

ox·y·mo·ron:
A figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, self-contradictory effect, as in “Liberal Conservative.”
Don't know about the "oxy" part ... but the rest of the word certainly fits.
Well ... back to the necropolis!

RIP Jack, no intelligent life from Demon Deacon since you passed. He's still using the wide paint brush as usual, all conservatives still hate black people, Mexicans and gay people.
Another beauty, there are so many to choose from:
Denzien,
He (Dan) does not read, and is a homophobe of the worst kind--

I was truly appalled to walk into a Mexican restaurant last night and see Mexicans working there. As Obama and Demon Deacon would say I just bitterly shook my head with antipathy. Oh and I had to work with more black people this week, the horror. On top of everything my gay buddy sent me a sales lead today and I had to respond to his email.
I truly feel sorry for conservative blacks, Mexicans and gay people. The self-loathing must destroy them from within.
RIP Jack, you don't have to worry about it anymore. BTW, who are the folks in the afterlife pulling for, Obama or Hillary?

Wow!
Danny, you show your ignorance by "re-posting" my words--you are validating everything I've ever written.
I'll have to admit, I am flattered to see that I was accurate to the inth degree even back in 2006!
Danny, thanks for the proving my points and 'exposing' your lack of depth to an entirely new audience.
