Blame high gas prices on Democratic Congress

You reported that Senate Democrats are calling for a “profits tax” on oil companies. People should be reminded that the economy is more influenced by the laws passed by Congress than by the pronouncements of the president.

The Democrats took control of Congress in January 2007. At that time, the economy was doing pretty well. One of the first things that the Democratic Congress did was to “punish” big oil by reducing subsidies.

The result has been oil and gasoline prices at all-time highs. Regular gas went from about $2.50 per gallon to currently over $3.50 per gallon and is projected by some to approach $4 per gallon during the summer months.

The profits that oil companies make are not unreasonable when calculated as a percentage of their income. The Democrats’ plan to punish oil companies will only serve to increase prices at the pump further.

The Democrats are doing what they are good at, increasing taxes while spinning their actions in populist rhetoric.

Yeah! blame them . . . and the other guys and those three over there and those in the corner over there . . . arrrgh, uhmmmph, poot . . . also blame the earth for not farting out more oil so we can put it in our big fat cars and trucks and use it all up . . . rah rah rah . . .

Step back and address the problem . . . we are running out.

Don't be a fat head . . . help out . . . converse or invent propetual motion . . .

We are not running out. Far from it. We've got enough oil in Alaska to supply the United States for centuries. That's right... centuries.

I wince when I think about oil companies making record profits and being subsidized by taxpayers.

However, simply taxing the oil company more or removing subsidies does accomplish one thing...increased gas prices.

On the other hand, if we put price fixes on oil companies, do we end up rationing oil again and standing in line to buy a few gallons?

I don't have the answer but I agree with J Peterman that the supply is having a tough time keeping pace with demand. The supply side has more to do with refineries than available oil.

The demand side is the big problem.

If Congress wants to pass some laws, pass some that require MEANINGFUL fuel efficiency cuts on our cars and trucks.

Maybe even cut back on our use of plastic.

How dare they want to stop giving a subsidy to a multi-billion dollar corporation like Exxon Mobil.

They didn't stop. That's a mistake by Mr. Hahn.

MemberName, you took the words out of my mouth. I was going to link to Roch's post, too:

"The House of Representatives approved an energy bill in 2007 that would have reduced subsidies, but those provisions were rejected by the senate and the final bill, with subsidies intact, was signed into law by President Bush."

Also a point in Roch's blog: Mr Hahn's letter is factually incorrect (see above). I guess the N&R doesn't factcheck the LTEs.

As to Mr. Hahn's letter:

"The profits that oil companies make are not unreasonable when calculated as a percentage of their income."

Huh? If prices weren't so high, their income and profits wouldn't be so high. They go together. It's like saying that they make a lot of money because they charge so much. Duh.

Ironically I was cleaning up some old files today and found a letter to the editor I wrote in 2000 in response to people whining about gas being $1.50 per gallon.

Funny, when the Replublicans were in control it was "Congress can't control prices it's a free economy" yada yada yada. Stop blaming and fix it. Drill more, move away from oil, do anything just get it done. As soon as people realize that ALL PARTIES ARE RESPONSIBLE the sooner we'll be free from having the leader of the free world beg a king for more oil like a kid begging for candy. It's PATHETIC!

WHERE HAS THIS GUY BEEN LIVING FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS???

Mr. Hahn,
Nixon is no longer in Office with wage and price controls. Ford is no longer touting "WIN" or Whip Inflation Now. Carter is no longer turning down the thermostat, or appointing the likes of Paul Volcker to the Fed. Reagan is dead. George Herbert Walker Bush only had one term, and Bill Clinton has been out of office for almost EIGHT years!
Now that I've pulled you through the past six occupants of the White House--you can catch up on the last 8 years from old newspapers, magazines and the History Channel. I hate to break it to you, but the GOP congress broke all records on spending, replacing the Democrats as the party of runaway spending.
Now take your medicine, roll over, and go back to sleep.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd wager that Mr. Hahn is an "active" member of the Republican Party.

He would HAVE to be, to write this painful diatribe. I would have more respect for a letter explaining away Bush's overseas comments on Obama, or a letter about what a great President George Bush has been.

But this letter is so unbelievably lame, that I'm truly embarrassed for Mr. Hahn.

No Mr. Hahn. It was not the Democratic Congress....it was Reverend Wright!

He's the one responsible for $4.00/gal gasoline.

He's the one responsible for the cool reception Bush received from the Saudis when he went begging for increased production.

Wright is responsible for the GOP losing the last three special elections.

In fact, Reverend Wright is the one who is causing the polar ice caps to melt, and for the disappearance of polar bears.

That danged ol' preacher is wreaking havoc the world over!

He's the reason we don't have an energy policy!

Jeremiah Wright is the reason people are losing their jobs and why illegal immigration is a problem!

OH, AND DON'T FORGET THOSE GAY PEOPLE!!! They want to break into your house and steal your GUNS! And your bibles!

Liberals! Those damn liberals! Liberals like Jesus, Ghandi, and Martin Luther King have just ruined the world!

Mr. Hahn, I hope my ideas have helped you figure out some more 'bogeymen'.

Great rant Demon Deacon......gasoline, Ghandi and gays. Who woulda thunk it? Congrats!! Keep up the good work. That rant is well worthy of archiving and duly saved. I'll call it the triple G double D rant. I'll thank you and Rev. Wright both for your contributions.

You did another really good double rant recently and I asked you to make it a perfect three to no avail. Can you do it this time please?
