Can America trust its voting machines?

The documentary film “Uncounted” has certainly heightened my concern regarding the way votes are counted in the United States of America. Any lingering hope that the electoral process has improved since the election fraud of 2004 and 2006 has been dispelled with the realization that electronic voting machines can be manipulated and the manipulation never be detected.

It is deplorable in a country that prides itself on being a democracy that registered voters have had their names removed from voter registration files; machines break down, causing people to wait in long lines with many of them having had to return to jobs without ever voting; that a paper trail is nonexistent in many cases, which means that there is no recount of votes if needed.

If the election of 2008 is to be fair and truly democratic, apathy must go. Awareness and involvement must take its place.

Make a difference. Make your vote count.

You know, the machines are going to take over the Planet Earth eventually, whether its Matrix-style domination with human energy farms or the Decepticons and the Cube after they finally defeat the Autobots.

It's inevitable, unless the Martians take over first...just remember, if they try, keep a record of some yodeling music around. It's the only way you'll survive.

I agree about the yodeling and the voting machines, although I see great advantages in their easily manipulated nature. Properly manipulated by the vast right wing conspiracy, the machines could elect a conservative for president (if one were running). Lacking that, they can at least generate a vast left wing paranoia, which is always good for a chuckle (although, to be fair, paper ballots with chads, butterflies, etc. did an equally good job of that).

Remember the difference between a dimpled chad versus and hanging chad Brian?

I have heard that all the voting machines will be put into "Maximum Overdrive" for this election ( at least the one's down around Wilmington).

Screw the machines people . . . worry about the politicians.

Was this a Michael Moore, a Al Gore, or a Oliver Stone film! Where do you "black heliocopter" loons come from? If you are really concerned about voter fraud check out ACORN, who is cited every election period for submitting thousands of fraudulent regristration cards, or Washington State where many absentte ballots were thrown away.

You same nutcakes tried to blame Republicans for the "hanging chad" debacle in Florida despite the fact that the infamous "butterfly ballot'" was designed by a Demo-Rat, and the three counties in question were all run by Demo-Rats. Isn't it strange that the loons always crying fraud have stood in the way of every piece of legislation presented to combat fraud. Finally, the Supreme Court has validated the Indiana iniative over the protests of the ACLU, Indiana Demo-Rat Party, and the ACLU who filed suit to stop the law. If nor for voter fraud the Demo-Rats would never win an election!

As much of an idiot that I think Michael Moore is, security problems do exist with the Diebold voting machines. As an IT security professional with over 15 years of experience, I can tell you it would take less than a minute to infect a diebold machine with software that steals votes.

Anyone who has physical access to the machine, can pick a lock (or in some cases use a screwdriver to remove the housing) and write some rudimentary code in C or assembler would be able to compromise the system. In fact, I believe the Computer Science department at Princeton proved this to be true.

While I am also concerned with the integrity of the machines, I'm more concerned that people can vote without ever showing a single form of identification.

Alright, then, folks. Tell me what the fool-proof, fraud-proof method of voting is. Even when we had old voting methods, election fraud occurred, i.e., Cook County, Louisiana, etc. Basically, there are none, so we better just get on with what we have, and accept it as being less than perfect, and stop whining about it.

I agree with the former comment that one of the biggest exposures to election fraud is allowing people to walk-up and vote with no i.d. ACORN has shown how election fraud can occur. It is said that every vote should count, but I say that every valid vote should count. If votes are counted that are not legit, it only waters discounts the value of my and your vote.

Amen Earnestine. You cannot get on an airplane without an ID, you cannot cash a check without an ID, many places will not sell you alcohol without an ID regardless of age, you are not supposed to drive a car without and ID (license specifically), yet you can vote without an ID? What sense does that make?

Reminds me of the political cartoon in the N&R recently; a voter shows up at the polling precinct and is asked for his ID. His reply "They didn't ask for an ID at the last precinct where I just voted".

PROBABLY CAN TRUST THE MACHINES --- NOT SURE ABOUT THE VOTERS. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE TO SHOW A PHOTO ID. TOO MANY "DEAD" PEOPLE HAVE VOTED IN THE PAST.

ALSO, IF HILLARY WINS AND OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS ENDORSE OBAMA --- COME NOVEMBER --- WE ALL NEED TO VOTE TO REPLACE ALL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES NEED TO LISTEN TO "WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES" --- NOT TO A "WANNA-BE-PRESIDENT-IN-TRAINING WHO HAS RUN HIS ENTIRE CAMPAIGN ON LIES AND HAS TOO MANY TIES TO TERRORISTS AND ANTI-AMERICAN FRIENDS". We American’s elected ALL members of Congress, as well as state and local officials, to be “our voice” --- we are tired of you taking our voices away.

MAYA ANGELOU SAID: “Hillary Clinton is a prayer of every American who really longs for fair play. Working men and women have had their jobs snatched from underneath them, their homes snatched away from them. And what we need, I think, is a person, a President who can make a difference in our country. She intends to help our country become what it can become. She dares to say human beings are more alike than we are unalike. I watched her become interested in public health and in education for all the children. And I watched her stand. I have found the person I think would be the best president for the United States of America.”

VOTE HILLARY 2008!

Earnestine [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Dan, I wouldn't be surprised if that cartoon was a true story.

I recently registered to vote after moving. They sent me to voter registration cards. One on Friday and then another one yesterday. I'm taking both of them and see how many times I can vote.

One last thing to say:

Where's Ross Perot when we need him?
