Investing in education is well worth the cost

As a Guilford County school parent and Guilford County voter, I fully support the Guilford County Board of Education-proposed budget for 2008-2009.

The $16,049,575 request is responsible and reasonable, and I urge the Guilford County Board of Commissioners to approve the request in its entirety as a demonstration of its commitment to making public education for all citizens a top priority.

The passage of the education facilities bonds on May 6 clearly shows our citizens are committed to investing in quality education in Guilford County.

Continued investment in programs and students that includes maintaining current efforts as well as creating specific efforts to improve the school environment and improve achievement of all students will continue to make Guilford County a wonderful place to live and work and attractive to outside families and companies who might consider relocating to our community.

This funding supports both our students and our economic development and must be approved.

Stephanie Chandler

Money does not equal Education.

Hey, JDR, I was going to say that!

I still say there are lots of improvements to be made that would cost nothing. For example, trade a few high-priced administrators for twice as many teachers or three times as many teacher assistants. Get rid of stupid time-wasters such as "Introduction to Freshman Orientation" and replace them with things like "Read an Actual Book for 45 Minutes a Day."I'll bet we can come up with all sorts of ideas that cost nothing.

Stephanie, once again you prove my contention that the biggest mistake we've ever made is giving women the right to vote!

The problem with people like you is that you seem incapable of understanding that no matter how many hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars spent, the product never gets better, but rather, worse. We have to ship so many jobs overseas that used to be done here by high school graduates, because so many of our high school graduates, the ones who do actually graduate, still function at the 8th grade level. I know, I know, your kids have gotten a good education. Have them call me as I'd like to ask them a few simple questions!

Back many years ago, in the days of Jerome Melton as Superintendent of the Guilford County Schools, when budget time came around he would have his cenral office cronies write letters to the editor and then give them to parents to submit under their own signature. This letter smells just like those did....rotten!

So the voters approval of the school bonds cannot be considered an indication of how our community feels about supporting education? If that is not a thermometer, what is?

Doug H [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JDR, I gotta play devil's advocate and say:

Lack of money doesn't equal education, either.

Stefanie, how do you propose we pay for the bonds? "We the people" didn't vote the sales tax!

mamaboilermaker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Voter approval of the bonds might indicate support for education. It also might indicate that many voters don't expect to be the ones who actually pay for the bonds and they simply feel good about spending other people's money.

School bonds passed, funds will come from property taxes. See this link for details.

Sales tax did not pass.

Ms. Chandler's letter appears to be directed to the commissioners. As voters we do not have direct input towards the county budget, but we do have input as to whom we elect to serve our community.

Ms. Chandler,

"The $16,049,575 request is responsible and reasonable"

How do you know this to be true? Even the school board members do not know everything that is packed into this bogus budget. It is impossible for you to know that the request is responsible or reasonable.

As ChickenLittle indicated, this smells like a set-up letter. It is the second such letter that I have seen recently. It is irritating to me that school personnel or school advocates play this game. It was played to pass the humongous school bonds, and now it is being played to get a pork-ladened budget passed. There can be no doubt that there was manipulation in the election to get the bonds passed, as no one expected it. If Ms. Chandler has inside knowledge that every dollar in this budget request is needed, then provide us a line item review to educate us. If you do not have such knowledge, Ms. Chandler, give it a rest, and give my property taxes a rest.

True mamab, and it was sold very well; "Vote yes for kids". So if you voted no you must be against kids right?

I still think many voters somehow think bonds are someone else's money. Notice the sales tax was defeated, everyone knows that IS their money.

At the moment we are in beautiful Prince Edward Island and it's around 49 degrees outside.

No doubt Canada is a beautiful country and the people are exceptionally kind, it's just expensive.

The sales tax here is a whopping 13%. The exception is groceries, no wait, someone told me that items such as candy, soda and other 'bad' items are taxed at the regular rate. The govt. decides which food items are good or bad and you pay accordingly.

If you drink alcohol, be prepared to pay. We went into a govt. owned liquor store to look at prices. A 12 pack of regular beer, Bud, Coors or basic Canadian beer like Labatts costs around $22 + the 13% sales tax.

I bought a T-shirt emblazoned with the Canadian flag for protection whilst on future trips to France or England :-)

One of the most popular ways that some people try to separate you from your money is to use that old line..."It's for the children". As Dan rightly said, if you are not willing to give generously to these people's demands, you are an insensitive, hateful person. It makes it more egregious when they say that giving your money represents "a demonstration of your commitment to making public education for all citizens a top priority." Education may be a priority, but it isn't being achieved very quickly, if at all, in this county, and more money is not the answer.

Dear Ms. Stephanie Chandler -

Shame on you. Why do you claim to pen your letter as merely a concerned "Guilford County school parent and Guilford County voter"? Why did you not disclose to all that you are Guilford Education Alliance's director of development? Why did you not disclose to all that on May 14, 2008 your organization passed a "Resolution in Support of Board of Education Budget Request to the Board of County Commissioners"? Why did you not disclose that the very publication that you used to promote your agenda, the News and Record, is one of Guilford Education Alliance's Sponsors?

All of that sheds a different light on your letter.

Finally, of the now thirteen comments to your letter, only two were favorable. Both were by "smshaf" please admit or deny whether you, Ms. Chandler, penned these comments? Is it not true that those are the initials of your maiden name? If so, why do you continue to deny to all who you really are in pedaling your agenda?

Interesting--it seems that the News and Record itself should have disclosed her vested interest when it published her letter, if that is indeed the case.

As you stated investing in education is well worth, the amount you stated is too much high.. Although investing on eduction is good only, some reasonable steps are to be analysed before investing..

Educational Schools demand bonds which might indicate support for education.
It also might indicate that many voters don't expect to be the ones who actually pay for the bonds. Much bucks have to be spent on education which needs a preplanned analysis and proper budget generation.
