New gadget for cars could smooth out traffic

I believe I have come up with an idea that may save us thousands and collectively millions of dollars. I have been a properly licensed driver for 28 years and have noticed a need for some type of device installed on our vehicles that would indicate to other drivers our intention to change directions. If such a device were available, I believe it would help avoid rear-end collisions, confusion at intersections and simply maintain a fluid motion of continuity.

I have mulled it over and, from the best I can ascertain, it needs to be installed where the driver can easily and mindlessly get used to using it. Maybe on the left side of the steering column. When activated, it would start a chain reaction of lights flashing — left-side lights for left turns and right-side lights for right turns.

I am sure I am on to something. If someone would please let me know how to get such a device patented, I would really appreciate it.

I got a better idea, David. How about inventing a device that will brighten our headlights into oncoming traffic so we can see them better? I'm sure that would be a much more useful device :P

David, while this sounds like a good idea on the surface, I don't think it would catch on.
Drivers would not take to this change as both hands are already in use. Sometimes one hand is on the steering wheel. The other is is either holding the cell phone or the sandwich they are eating.
Maybe you should invent a device that works alone without any input from the driver/talker/eater.

I would like a device added to cars that senses on coming traffic and prevents the driver from pulling out in front of the on coming traffic.

But Dan, I might have a good reason to pull out into oncoming traffic.

What if I'm being pursued by a giant gorilla, a T-Rex, or, more realistically in my case, thousands of scantily clad females?

I've got to get away.

And ghost wants a mind-reading car....

rahrah, my reference is on two lane roads with a 55 mph limit. Here I am doing 59.95 mph and some clod pulls out in front of me, starts going about 25 mph, drives 1/4 mile and turns. I want a sensor to prevent said clod from performing such maneuvers.

The sensor would lock the brakes and audibly tell the clod: "think idiot, it you wait 6.5 seconds, let this car pass by, then you can go 25 mph and turn".

Never been chased by a T-Rex, but I do remember the scantily clad females. Enjoy while you can, they eventually disappear after marriage and children :)

The girls chase me everywhere, even country roads, especially country roads.

I'm sure you've never had to pull out in front of somebody ever...maybe when you were ditching cops on your escape from the crack house.

But, yeah, follow traffic laws.
