Pitts is wrong, again, about teachings of Bible

Well, here he goes again. The resident writer and chief theologian of the Miami Herald has issued an edict of infallibility concerning who is in step with Christianity and who is not (Leonard Pitts column, “Christianity out of step with teachings of Jesus,” April 28). Only those “in step” with his brand of “modern Christianity” can be counted among the faithful.

Pitts’ source of truth is not the Bible but “modern Christianity.” I certainly don’t agree with the Rev. Hayes Wicker that same-sex unions are worse than slavery. But the Bible clearly puts sex outside of marriage, meaning a woman and a man, in the category of sin. Scripture clearly condemns homosexuality.

The issues of morality are not left up to “modern” men who will exchange the truth for a lie. Read Judges and see what happens when people do “what is right in their own eyes.”
Out of step? I’d rather be out of step with the world and “modern Christianity” in order to be in step with God. The Bible says, “Beware of those who call good evil and evil good.”

You mean like Hagar? Supposedly the woman who's (grand)children ending up creating Arabia and Islam. Or Lot's daughters? Or Jesus' affiliation with whores?

The bible ain't a catch-all man. You can find something for, and something against everything. That is what you get with religion by committee.

I wish I could be certain about anything as much as 'good christians'. It amazes me what mental loops they can go through to always remain mentally unyielding. I might go as far to say they were intelligent, if they didn't let little girls die from lack of health-care in favor of prayer.

If the Christian right would devote more time to Jesus's teachings rather than picking and choosing verses to divide people, we'd all be better off.

Where do these nutz find Jesus supporting guns and war?

Where do these nutz find Jesus condemning people for loving one another?

Where do these nutz find Jesus supporting pre-emptive war?

As the bumper sticker says,

I'd suggest that folks who want to argue about what's in the Bible and not in the Bible, take a few months and actually READ the Bible cover to cover.

I found it to be a worthwhile use of my time. At least now, when people quote scripture, I know where I've heard it and in what context. Makes a huge difference when people are trying to use it for their own motives.

I completely agree. People should read the Bible cover to cover. It will make more Atheists!

I can respect that. People have the choice to react freely to any religion.

What I don't respect is when people try to quote bits and pieces to bolster their own pride and ego.

I question how reading the Bible would make one an Atheist, though. Even if you decide that you don't believe a single word in the Bible, it's hard to imagine looking at the complexity of the Universe (or a rat's eyeball, for that matter) and deriving the belief that there is no higher power responsible for its creation.

But, to each his own. I'm not criticizing, I just can't relate to how an atheist thinks.

Most that I have encountered show a lot of anger and resentment towards a God and religion that they don't believe in.

That's a very funny observation.
I have had a completely different experience with atheists. Two that come to my mind would qualify as "Christ-like" if you watched how they treated others, and worked on behalf of the homeless, the downtrodden and those living at the margins of society.

I didn't say that Atheists were bad people or angry at the world. They just seem to get hostile any time anyone mentions God or religion, especially JudeoChristian topics. Not all atheists, mind you. Some just laugh it off and go on with their lives. Some do really good things, as you mentioned.

Maybe a little bit of selfishness exists in me but if this life and the world we live in is all there is for us, that would be a real downer.
