Easley’s extensive travels put a dent in oil supplies
Gov. Mike Easley responded negatively to John McCain’s proposal to consider offshore oil drilling: “We need to get off gasoline, not trying to deplete what little might be left.”
Really, Gov. Easley? How much fuel did you deplete on your $19,500 first-class flight while on your $170,000 taxpayer-funded trip to Italy? How much fuel was depleted when $51,000 of our money was spent on a chauffeured Mercedes to transport you and your wife? How much fuel is depleted when you use state-owned aircraft to fly to your home in the Southport area?
Peter Schweizer wrote a book titled, “Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy.” Perhaps the sequel could feature our governor.

The silence on Sir and Lady Easley's squandering tax monies and polluting the environment from the usual (green) suspects here is very revealing...

Mr. Imbus,
It appears your issue is with tax dollars spent, rather than hypocrisy, so why don't you just come out and say it that way? Why the diversion to "green/not green" issues?
"How much fuel did you deplete on your $19,500 first-class flight...?" I'd venture it was within a couple of drops of the amout of fuel that would have been expended had he not been on the plane.
"How much fuel was depleted when $51,000 of our money was spent on a chauffeured Mercedes to transport you and your wife?" Would you have preferred if he had driven himself? Would a rented Mercedes with only two passengers and no chauffer have been more suitable?
Your issue is obvious -- and I'll even grant you the point about trips home (not sure how many of these there are) -- but trying to link it to 'green' issue hypocrisy is cheap.

The most unreachable Governor in the history of NC.

Sleasley most likely purchased carbon credits to rationalize the excess carbon spewed into the atmosphere on his Italian holiday.
Indulgences for "sin" are alive and well in the 21st century.

Good Riddance!

You're looking at it all wrong. He was doing his part to stimulate the economy. Heck, he probably stimulated enough for seven or eight people just on the plane flight alone. You ought to thank him instead of criticizing. That kind of vision is what we need, and I'd bet he'll stimulate the economy some more before he decides to retire. I've still got some money left, so the option is there.
It's the same reason he rode around in a rented Mercedes. Never mind that the state of N.C. could've purchased an entry level S-class for a little more than what we paid for his chauffeured ride, he was stimulating their economy.
FWIW, I question the judgment of anyone who would travel to Italy and actively choose to be carted around in the back seat of a large German car.

Here is Easley's excuse....er.....justification for the rented Mercedes:
"The governor rated a chauffeured car because of security concerns, said Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan Beatty, whose agency handles Easley's security. When Easley travels in the U.S., his security team can count on local police for security, Beatty said.
"The governor, to us, is very important. But in Italy you don't know how they will perceive him," Beatty said. "We want to make sure we're familiar with the transportation we'll be getting. The cost is what it is. We obviously don't want to request anything that's not needed.""
How they will perceive him? Give me a freaking break. I've been to Europe many times and most people have no clue where North Carolina is located, much less who it's governor is.
He could have saved $50,995 buy purchasing a $5 Canadian lapel pin and worn it. That's all the protection Americans need in Europe.
This vacation....er.....business trip was to promote Italian business and tourism in NC. A new Italian restaurant did open recently in Summerfield. Anyone seen any Italian tourists?

Dan, all the Lord-Governor had to do was sew a 50-cent Canadian patch on his backpack and he'd been guaranteed an unmolested European vacation.

As the rightwingers, such as little Dan have said whenever George W. Bush's pitiful presidency is brought up:
"His name's not on the ballot! He's not running!"
Easley is history---deal with it.

Give the good governor some tips on how to travel properly whilst in Europe Demon Deacon. It sure would have saved us taxpayers a lot of money.
We went to Canada last month and picked up some patches and lapel pins. I even bought a T-shirt in Quebec with "Je me souviens". Next time I go to France they will think I'm one of them. Extra protection you know

Lots of new faces in here, no doubt many of them wondering "wazzup with the Canadian flag patch bit"?...allow me:
Ned,
This is a great letter and I share your thoughts. As I contemplate another international trip with my family, I am even more disturbed at our standing in the world. While visiting London and France, we sewed Canadian flag patches to our backpacks---it saved us from the ire of many and we met many new friends through that act. I only wish we did not have to do that again.
Thanks again for your letter.

This was in response to one time liberal N-R columnist Ned Cline's LTE demanding Bush follow the new congress' wishes and surrender to the islamofascists in Iraq.
At least Sleezely had the sack to travel abroad sporting the American flag...even if it was bought and paid for with other peoples' money.
