Slanderers now target Michelle Obama

The following is a Counterpoint

By Al Mankoff

In a city fortunate enough to have matured from Quaker roots, it’s a pity to see the state of racial relationships with the likes of Billy Yow and Charles Davenport Jr.

Davenport’s “opinion” (read diatribe) of May 25 was a deplorable example of just the kind of rhetoric this country does not need in the crucial months that lie ahead. If this is a portent of what’s to come, we are, indeed, in dire straits both as a community and as a nation.

In the early George Wallace era, it was “barefoot and pregnant”; today, it’s “dissing” — not just women, but black women, with the prime target being Michelle Obama. She’s sassy and she’s uppity, and she is, above all, honest in speaking her mind and thoughts — such a refreshing change from plastic Pat Nixon, smarmy, “Just say no” Nancy Reagan and the sugary Laura Bush.

The myopic rightists — as in “The Night of the Living Dead” — are staggering out from their sodden pits, relentlessly pressing their mindless message of hate and divisiveness on yet another generation of gullible innocents.

For the record, I call this right-wing, largely Republican assault on black women “Mammy Myopia.” It is obviously a swift-boating maneuver — but this time, let’s hope that the majority of Americans see it for what it is, a deliberate attempt to slander a woman of grace and beauty, destined for greatness, orchestrated from the same Stygian depths that gave us Watergate, Iran-Contra and “Mission accomplished.”

The writer lives in High Point.

Al,
Man this is an election year and everthing said is fair game. Michelle Obama did all of this to herself. "Destined for greatness? You must be kidding!!!! She is obviously well educated but she is still riding on the coat tail of her "changing" husband.

This country is ready for a black president but Colin Powell is not running.

There is more vitriol in this lte than Jerry Wright ever spouted.
Are you suggesting that public statements by the life partner of a candidate for the highest office in the land are somehow exempt from examination?
"She’s sassy and she’s uppity..".- careful- your racist roots are showing.

Libel
(From Merriam-Webster)
" a written or oral defamatory statement or representation that conveys an unjustly unfavorable impression "
"The myopic rightists — as in “The Night of the Living Dead” — are staggering out from their sodden pits, relentlessly pressing their mindless message of hate and divisiveness on yet another generation of gullible innocents."
Sounds like libel to me- How about you, Mr. Davenport?

Mr. Mankoff, you are correct. Mr. Davenport's problem with Michelle Obama is that he views her as being uppity. In his mind, she doesn't know her place. This is in contrast to Oprah, who a lot of whites find "safe." Until now, Oprah never had to defend her choices, but, since she has come out behind Obama, she is catching hell.

The south is full of men like Davenport. As long as a black person is limited by education and economics, the Davenports of the world are content. But, once a black person has ascended beyond a routine education and economics and can actually form a complete sentence, that's when the Davenports of the world start to bitch. ML King Jr. once said that "a man can't ride your back unless it is bent." Davenport is used to seeing blacks with bent backs.

“Mammy Myopia.”?????? Could you possibly come up with a more racist term? I doubt it! LOL!!!

What Michelle Obama says now is fair game, but what she wrote in a master’s thesis twenty-five years ago is not.

Charles Davenport’s column was, in fact, deplorable. It was titled something like, “Michelle Obama Not Fit to be First Lady.” He seemed to concentrate on some misspellings found in her master’s thesis and heavily implied that the woman’s success had been undeserved and only the result of Affirmative Action.

Regarding the master’s thesis: Most college graduates I know, myself included, would cringe if someone scrutinized essays and papers written back in our college days for grammar mistakes. As much as I hope it’s not the case, I wouldn't be a bit surprised that there could easily be errors in what I’m writing here. I seriously doubt Mr. Davenport would really like anyone searching through his college papers (that is, if he went to college) for careless errors in order to declare him “unfit” for some role over twenty years later. At the time, Ms. Obama did not have the luxury of proofreaders and editors, a service I’m sure Mr. Davenport takes advantage of before his diatribes go to print. It’s worth noting, too, that Ms. Obama’s thesis was written before the days of computer Spell-Check. And irony of ironies, it’s pathetic that Mr. Davenport would try to use such a point to denigrate the woman considering he no doubt supported George Bush, who can barely get a coherent sentence out of his mouth.

And his point about Michelle Obama’s career success being the result of Affirmative Action? Affirmative Action may have assisted her in getting admitted into Princeton (I think that’s where she went), but it does nothing to assist one in receiving actual degrees. Mr. Davenport made it a point to stress that in her last job she made $315,000 per year, suggesting that it was somehow undeserved. Apparently the company she worked for didn’t seem to think so. And that salary sounds like a pretty good case FOR Affirmative Action to me. I don’t get these right wing kooks. They complain when minorities rely on any governmental assistance, but yet, at the same time, they seem to resent it when the benefits of an obviously successful program results in financial success for them. And just for the record, although I don’t think it necessarily originates from anything sinister (although the result may be sinister), affirmative action for whites goes on all the time—in college admissions in the way of legacies, by deals made on country club golf courses, and by the unpreventable, perhaps subconscious, human tendency of people in hiring positions (who often are white) to show a little bit of favor toward people they consider more like themselves.

Regarding Mr. Davenport’s column, it is particularly galling that he would use such meaningless details from a person’s past to declare her “unfit” for the role of first lady, a position we don’t even vote for, but it’s especially so since John McCain’s wife was once addicted to pain medication and stole pharmaceutical drugs. That’s a fact. Seems to me it would be easier to declare her unfit for the role.

His column was nothing but a cheap shot and a low blow.

I find it interest thst the writer did not address a single of the many issues put forth by Davenport. Liberals, after defending the "Clinton Crime Family" for 15 years have now decided that character actually is an issue, but now, not for the Obamas! That's what make them liberals!

The writer, Mr. Dumbkopf says he lives in High Point, but I believe he's awaiting a deportation hearing!

First, George Wallace was a Demo-Rat. Next Davenport's column was not about Black "women" it was a about a specific woman who happens to be black (an as arrogant as they come!).

"Message of hate and divissiness?" Why is Mr. Dumbkopf bringing Jeremiah Wright into this! Apparently Mr. Dumkopf has not been watching the Demo-Rat primary season. These "open-minded" liberals have been playing the race card, and the gender card like they take aspirin.

The Obama campaign called the long time liberal, Geraldine Ferraro a racist for merely telling us what we all know that the only reason Obama got to this point is because he is black. His ideological clone John Edwards was a white Obama, and his Marist message went nowhere in two presidential tries!

I just recently saw Ms. Ferraro on television calling the Obama campaign racist. It all began when Slick Willie tried to paint Obama as the "black" as in Jesse Jackson. It's not even close, Jackson is an eloquent speaker.

Now Mrs. Clinton and her supporters are charging sexism. And mr. Dumbkopf lashes out at Republicans for doing what his beloved Demo-Rats are doing, but rather than just the demagoguery of the left, we are actually seing it play out, in front of our eyes, on national televsion!

One respondent suggested that Mr.Davenport trashed the "lovable" ("swarmy" Nancy Reagan, plastic Pat Nixon!) for misspelling words when she was "only" a senior in college, an Ivy League college. They were not misspelled words, THEY WERE NOT WORDS AT ALL! Separationist is NOT a word. She meant separatist!

Then of course Mr. Dumpkopf brings up Watergate, Iran-Contra, and Mission Accomplished, none of which has anything to do with the question at hand. He forgot slavery, and Jim Crow!

He didn't use the term "typical black women" as did Mr. Obama when calling his grandmother a "typical white woman." He didn't say the gracious Mrs. Obama was "bitter and clings to her Marxism, gun control, and Black Liberation Theology" as a crutch!

I've still not found a specific issue from Davenport's column to which Mr. Dumbkopf refers to in idiotic tirade!

Mr. Mankoff showed a card there if any of you are willing to see it.

I argue that it's the belief, as Mankoff said, that "she is, above all, honest in speaking her mind and thoughts" which causes so many to reject her. We can all acknowledge that she says exactly what she believes. Our differences come because some of us agree with her and others don't. The nifty part is where disagreeing immediately becomes "dissing" and is turned into some sort of blanket prejudice against an entire shaded gender.

As much fun as it seems to make everything about color, a great deal of us don't pay attention to it. It's interesting to note the ones that do...

Mr. Mankoff, Mrs. Obama is an out-and-out racist, pure and simple. There can be little doubt of that, regardless of what Mr. Davenport or Mr. Yow have to say on the subject. Only a myopic moron would require their input to discern that fact.

Further, regardless of your opinion of Mrs. Nixon, Mrs. Reagan and Mrs. Bush ... and I do find it fatuous that you would compare M. O. to any of them in the first place ... none of them are/were the steely-eyed bigots that Mrs. Obama so obviously delights in being.

Senator Obama recently resigned from the Trinity United C. of C., but I have not heard or read of her following suit. And while that may be more indicative of his propensity for hypocrisy than her white-hate, it certainly speaks to her racist predilection quite articulately.

Democratic Presidents have independent, strong-willed wives--Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and maybe Michelle Obama; although there is the slightest chance that our new independent wife will be Bill Clinton.

They're going to take flak and have to deal with it. It's politics and Obama is just pretending that he doesn't play the game while he's playing it as hard as the rest of them.

This lte sounds like a preemptive strike to silence any critique and limit the use of Ms. Hussein Obama's primary campaign statements in the fall campaign, which show her to be the America hating bigot that she is and a lame attempt to stop the upcoming revelations of the iceberg that TUCC is just the tip of.

In other words, if you dare offer any critique of the Obamas, be prepared to be branded a 'racist' by the liberals and their parrots in the lamestream media.

...surprise, surprise.

BTW, many of the white female teenyboppers seems to be coming out of the fog they have been in over the last few months and are fleeing the Deliverer and his message of 'hope and change' in droves...not very encouraging for one who promises to 'unite' America, huh? Perhaps they have decided to do some research for themselves and stop relying on the tingle that travels up Chris Mathews leg to base their decisions on?

Back from a restful vacation and see the race threads are alive and well, with the exception of our favorite race baiter.

My favorite quote of the day belongs to conundrum:

"As long as a black person is limited by education and economics, the Davenports of the world are content. But, once a black person has ascended beyond a routine education and economics and can actually form a complete sentence, that's when the Davenports of the world start to bitch."

This is the quintessential victimhood mentality of the "man" keeping you down. A guy with your intelligence can do better conundrum.

Actually I like anyone who can form a complete sentence regardless of race, seems more rare these days :)

If Mrs. Obama wishes to publicly inject herself into her husband's campaign that's fine, but her statements are then fair game to scrutiny and comment without the race card being played at every turn.

While I agree that citing spelling errors hardly seems relevant to an argument of fitness to be First Lady, Davenport did bring out an important point. Michelle Obama has made statements that indicate she is a separatist rather than an integrationist. The question then becomes whether a separatist ideology best represents the goals of the Democrat Party and our nation. While it's true that the election is not being held to choose a First Lady, her role is widely viewed as a partnering relationship with the President, and her comments need to be in line with the goals of the party and the nation.
