Democrats get blame for high gasoline prices

OK, Democrats. Stop complaining about high gas prices. You and your environmentalist wacko friends are responsible for this mess. For 30-plus years, you have prevented new drilling in the United States and the building of new refineries.

You say we “can’t” drill our way to energy independence. “Can’t” shouldn’t be in the American vocabulary. Imagine Jack Kennedy saying in 1961 we “can’t” go to the moon!

Your once great party has decided to nominate another Jimmy Carter for president. I remember the “malaise” days the Georgia peanut farmer brought us and have no desire for a replay.

Oh, I forgot. The media has anointed Barack Obama as our new “messiah.” Maybe Obama can “change” water into gasoline and diesel fuel. After all, he is the candidate of “change.”

Jeff,

Where is the substance to back up your baseless claims? How much would drilling in the US contribute to the lowering of gas prices? A penny? A nickel? A dollar? And for how long?

Until some information like that is presented, you join an apparently never-ending succession of whiners who produce nothing but noise.

If I remember correctly Jeffery Smith wrote letters singing Bush's praise several times in the past. This would explain his current effort to find fault with the dems and Obama. He must be having a difficult time finding a rationale for all Bush's blunders and defending him the way he has in the past.

My condolences, Jeffery.

I don't know. I will say that we can't drill our way to energy independence *forever*.

"Maybe Obama can “change” water into gasoline and diesel fuel."

It's not Obama, and it's substituting, not changing. But...

Rubbish!

Lest we not forget Bush's 2001 "energy bill" that encouraged gas guzzling SUVs with tax breaks while not allowing tax breaks for economical cars.

Lest we not forget that the Democrats have only controlled Washington for 4 of the last 20 years the LTE writer speaks of.

Lest we not forget the lowering of fuel economy standards under Republican controlled congresses.

Lest we not forget that even big oil companies now admit that there is a limited supply of oil.

My brother had a 1965 Opal wagon that got 55 miles per gallon but even today's economy cars are unable to do the same.

And finally, my daily driver is a homebuilt machine that gets 200 miles per gallon that I built from junk in my shed out back. If I can get 200 miles per gallon then why can't the automakers do better than they do? I don't know the answer to that question but I do know that a ban on drilling wasn't the cause.

Jeffrey, actually it's the environmental wackos. With their 'Green' party sputtering along on two wheels they have taken up residence in the democratic party until their own party can manage to recruit a couple more to bring their total numbers to somewhere in the neighborhood of 12. They'll have their own party then, and can tell the democrats where to get off. Meanwhile they're stuck with Pelosi & Co.

Oh, and Carter's follies were the result of the relatively new political 'time lag'. That being he inherited all the down sides of the last republican administration and the good sides...well, there never are any 'good' sides to republican administrations are they? The stage is already being set by the Deliverer's apologists with playbook phrases like "He will have Bush's mess to clean up"...and who among us can expect even a Messiah to govern competently while trying to "clean up" a mess?

Sometimes you think the writers come from some alternate universe. Reps are in total power for 6 years & Dems get a tenuous and nearly powerless majority in congress and all of a sudden they get the blame for everything that went on for the prior 6 years. Weird.

It's funny that some folks think that the worldwide oil market will be revolutionized by a few holes in Alaska. Are the Democrats holding back oil production all over the world in the 97% of the reserves that aren't in America?

It would be funny if some of these folks were decision makers in Washington.

I don't think that the oil market will be revolutionized. However, the logic of supply and demand does make sense. Increase the supply, stave off demand, and lower the price. It's certainly not going to give us $1.00/gallon gas, but every little bit helps.

While I'm no fan of Bush's energy policies, the truth of the matter is that bad energy policies have been implemented by both Republicans and Democrats. We didn't get into this mess by one party's actions, and we're certainly not going to get out of it by a single party's actions either.

This LTE is rather sophomoric in it's style and I don't see most Dems as environmental wackos. They probably don't enjoy paying $4/gallon gas either.

Neo is onto it, the environmental wackos have taken roost in the Democratic party, with global warming as their religion, and Democratic (and some Repubs) politicians cow tow to their lobby.

Remember the commuter from Summerfield who wrote a LTE stating that high gas prices are a good thing? Their reasoning is that sky high gas prices are the only way Americans will hopefully follow their agenda and put us all in govt. subsidized mass transport and outlaw SUVs. They are the ones who sue when Duke Energy or anyone for the matter wants to build a new plant. They are the ones who demonize the coal industry. These people wield alot of power through the courts and now their influence is spreading through the political system under the mantra of global warming. Thank them for the mess we are in.

Billy, a 200mpg daily driver? Are the trade-offs in pollution, protection, performance, peril, or population? With that mileage I'd think at least three would have to be compromised.

rahrah, if I said "flux capacitor," would it mean anything to you?

And Happy Independence Day to all.

Bishop,

There's not enough domestic oil to make a meaningful difference at the pump. Not only isn't it going to give us $1.00 gas it isn't enough to give us $3.90 gas. It's been estimated that opening ANWR would drop the price of a barrel of oil by $0.75 which would translate to about $0.02 per gallon of gas. That would really turn our lives around wouldn't it? This is just a ruse by the oil companies to get to a little morsel of off limits oil. I'd rather keep this little bit in the ground as part of our strategic oil reserves than drain America first.

I'll agree with you energy policy has been a joke under Dems & Reps since the day that Reagan took the oath of office.

A Delorian that probably shouldn't go faster than 88 mph and originally required weapons-grade uranium for operation, then a lightning bolt, then pretty much anything that you could put in a blender.

Bishop, back up your statements with some facts. You like me, have no clue how much oil is in the ground. All the figures you use are made up, with someone with a agenda. You like I have no idea how much oil prices would drop if we drilled in Anwar, are along the coast. Nixon tried to get us on a energy course and was shot down, we did not learn a thing when we stood in gas lines during the Carter years. We have went 40 years and have did nothing. In my opinion, both parties have led us down the path to nowhere. I going to show you just how stupid we are. Harry Reid states oil, and coal makes me sick. Harry, is from Nevada, where Vegas is located. Its in the middle of nowhere, its hot. So they need tremendous amounts of air condition. The best way to get there in on a plane. So he willing to shutdown, this major tourist center. Only to advance is agenda. The Kennedys are all for wind farms, however not in their back yards. We should seek every energy means we can. The first thing is to drill. We could start that today. You see the Pelosi common sense to plan to lower gas prices have not cut it. Lets face it both parties suck, and we are paying the price.

Bishop [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Figures?

Please cite exactly which figures I used. If you had read what I wrote, you'd see it's only applying the logic of supply and demand to the problem.

You made me laugh aloud, Biting Dog, with "Nixon tried to get us on a energy course and was shot down ... "

Ha .. he sounded EXACTLY like the much despised Peanut Farmer.
