Helms rates far below a truly great senator
“Within my memory, Jesse Helms is the only statesman North Carolina has ever sent to Washington” (letter, July 12). Obviously, Thomas Harrington has not lived in this state very long.
Sam Ervin was truly a great North Carolinian and American statesman. He made us proud of our representation in the Senate.
Helms could not hold a candle to that really great man.

"The President is a servant of the Constitution and not it's master. There is nothing explicit or implicit in that instrument which exempts him from a duty the law imposes on all competent human beings in our land."
"I'll have you understand I am running this court, and the law hasn't got a damn thing to do with it!

Ervin has earned his position high on the liberals' pedestal because of his puppet role in Watergate and the media's lauding him with praise for his 'courage' in bringing down a sitting (R) president.
Old Jesse was dragged through the mud by the liberal media on a daily basis for his speaking the truth about affirmative action and other popular liberal programs that they deemed helped those incapable of taking care of themselves.
Funny I don't recall much media attention given to the fact that "Senator Sam" opposed almost all 'civil rights' legislation in the 60s and the equal rights amendment in the 70s upon his death.
Guess it just slipped the liberal editors' collective minds...that happens sometimes.
