Don’t cast aside illegal immigrants

The following is a Counterpoint column.

By Deborah Kelly

I appreciate the clarity in the message that the News & Record editorial on immigration brought to the surface (“Ending illegal entry,” Aug. 2).

It is naive to believe nobody benefited from the entry of immigrants into this country. If so, they never would have been allowed to enter.

If it were not in the self-interest of the powers that be to have low-wage workers in this country, this situation never would have presented itself.

It’s probably hypocritical at best that, when the general perception becomes that these people are no longer of use to this country, we cast aside a whole generation, or two, of immigrants who have made the United States their home.

It’s important to consider that, although it was not all of our doing, we played a lead role in the situation at hand. It’s also important to consider that laws are supposed to reflect the moral imperative of the land and, in this case, they don’t.

We cannot, in good conscience, say, on one hand, “Work for us,” and on the other, “Don’t be human. Do not bring with you the weary or the tired. Do not misbehave, for we will hold the many accountable for the few.”

More importantly, we shouldn’t say, “We are done with you. Go back to where you came from because you have become more trouble than you are worth.”

When we say that, we are creating the environment of hate for which we condemn other countries.

I also believe it is a fallacy that, because many of us advocate for immigration reform, that we, somehow, do not wish safety in our streets or for criminals to be held accountable. One issue does not void the other. It is not all or nothing.

Comprehensive immigration reform must reflect reality. And, until these laws are reformed, we will continue to separate families and send youth back to countries they did not envision in their futures. These individuals did a job well, were not a drain on our social services, created family and were a part of our community.

It’s sad that it should be OK not to address these issues with some semblance of compassion.

The writer is a health educator who lives in Greensboro.

Deborah,

You are reacting to this issue based solely on emotion. The is no practical benefit in allowing illegals to stay in a country they broke the law to enter into. The mere fact that they know they are breaking the laws of the US and choose to ignore that fact shows a blatant disrespect for our laws and us. Since they start out breaking the law, they see no reason to obey other laws, such as license, insurance, true identities.

As a health educator you should be aware of the burden these folks put on the US economy. As a citizen you should be aware of the erosion of the middle class, fueled by illegals.

You keep referring to how WE have used and abused these people. I am here to inform you how mistaken you are about "WE". The average American citizen has nothing to do with them being here, has nothing to do with them staying here and is not responsible for their decisions. Big businesses are the culprits, not the average American. Therefore, I refuse to accept blame for anything I (and most of my fellow Americans) had nothing to do with.

Most Americans do not want them here (as proven by the outcry when Bush wanted to give amnesty to them) and do nothing to encourage their entry nor their choice to stay.

Charity begins at home, Deborah. Let us stop rewarding law-breakers by giving away the store to people who disrespect us and are undermining our economy.

BTW, I do not hate these people. I simply resent my tax monies being used to support them since they have such a detrimental effect on our country. I resent the food vouchers, the free health care, the subsidized housing, the free schooling, the concessions made for non-english speaking individuals, all the freebies. And I especially resent it when an American citizen comes into my ICU unable to breath because they have not had the money to buy the necessary drugs while illegals get their drugs free.

Then illegals have the gall to demonstrate and "demand" their "rights". (Seems I got a little emotional myself. I do admit I get a little steamed when someone tries to shame American citizens into lying down and letting illegals walk all over them.)

Ditto everything Yvonne wrote! I might add to the point about them demanding their "rights" that they have NO rights here! They aren't citizens of our country and they are here illegally. They are breaking the law, and they're criminals by the fact that they have broken the law. Sorry, they left their "rights" in Mexico!

Deborah, I must ask you what part of "ILLEGAL" do you not understand? These people are welcomed to come here IF they do so LEGALLY.

I noticed the writer carefully avoided the word "illegal." Apparently our laws (made by "WE" the people) don't matter to her?

If the lte writer gets to choose which laws she obeys and disobeys, can I choose which laws I obey, too? I've spent half my summer (not really, but feels like it) at the DMV getting kids tests, permits, and upgraded licenses. It would be more convenient for me to ignore the licensing laws and just let my kids drive anyway. Would you be OK with that, Deborah? What if I decide I want some free stuff like the welfare moms get and falsify an application for assistance? Maybe I could use a dead person's social security number to do that. What if everybody did that?

Hard cases make bad law. Using an unfortunate instance or two to justify ALL illegals is wrong. Yes, children suffer when their parents act illegally. Life has always been that way, and no feel-good government policies will ever change that.

If either presidential candidate would actually understand what Yvonne, Bunny, and I have said, and lay out a sensible policy for ENFORCING EXIXTING LAWS, that person would have the support of the majority of Americans of all parties and win in a landslide. The question is, why don't these guys grab the one issue that would get all the "undecideds" into their camp? Talk about uniting the legal American people--that would do it!

"I noticed the writer carefully avoided the word "illegal."

The PC term used to be "undocumented" workers or immigrants, I guess now they are simply called immigrants regardless of legal status. That's a slap in the face to immigrants who are here legally.

When I submit LTEs to the N&R they choose the title. Notice the word illegal is contained in the title.

"More importantly, we shouldn’t say, “We are done with you. Go back to where you came from because you have become more trouble than you are worth.”

When we say that, we are creating the environment of hate for which we condemn other countries. "

Oh puulllllleeeeezzzz, we are condemning other countries and creating hatred? Yvonne is correct, this letter is based solely on emotion.

You people above (aside from the letter writer) are cold hearted, anti-social and don't speak for the majority . . . of anyone.

. . . I think the problem here isn't illegal vs. legal really . . . you are just satisfied and willing to profile anyone who you think is illegal . . . or looks immigrant . . .

Why don't you bunch of 'throw rugs' help a human out, stand up and be a person BE AMERICAN for once in your lifes . . . instead of stumping for the beheading of all illegals and immigrants of this country . . . rah rah rah

. . . get off your fat lazy asses, get out there and help some of these people in need, help them out for God's sake . . . isn't this what AMERICANS do . . .

. . . wouldn't you take any chance to better your lives or your families lives if you could . . . I know I would and do every day of my life . . .

JPRT, Phencyclidine use is illegal too.

tonymo [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JPRT is a perfect example of what we get when pay for our people to be (ill)educated in our failing government schools. They spend 12 years being brainwahsed by mostly liberal/Socialist "educators" who turn out abject fools like JPRT who thinks that anyone who thinks our laws should be obeyed, or enforced is not an American.

Perhaps JPRT should move his family to a border town in the Southwest and then tell us how un-American it is to want our families, and our property protected. JPRT is typical of today's liberal who from the comfort of his living room spouts the same lunacy ad nauseum.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

methinks JPRT is using a bit of sarcasm, either that or phencyclidine.

I doubt it. If it's a D's idea, the R's will find something wrong with it. If it's an R idea, the D's will most likely tear it down.

Anyone who's had work done on their home, hotel rooms or offices cleaned, or bought vegetables at the supermarket has probably benefited from low-wage illegal workers. The businesses using this low-cost human resource have benefited the most.

As for the social cost, here's my understanding (I invite anyone to correct me if I'm wrong.) Illegals use fake social security numbers & pay both income and FICA taxes. Given their low wages, the FICA taxes are the larger part. The Social Security Administration graciously accepts those taxes, without verifying whether they came from someone who qualifies for Social Security benefits. If they later apply for SS benefits, then the SSA checks for eligibility & denies benefits since they're not citizens or legal residents. The past FICA taxes, however, are not refunded.

The illegals are simply second class citizens we allow to handle our menial jobs so long as they don't get too uppity. The people who are really hurt are the unskilled American citizens who's wages are being bid down.

Real Tour, I think most of Americans are against illegals. That why the Bush Amnesty Bill got shot down. Many are paid in cash. Real Tour, I am not fat, I am not lazy, spend 6 years in the Army, bleed red, white and blue. So be careful who you call un america. They committed crime more than anyone in the USA. They drive with no car insurance, are a main factor in ID thief. They are breaking our health care system. I could go on, but I hate these SOB with a passion. We had a 80 year old woman in our neighbor hood, that was broken into by these illegals. I did not see it, my wife said it looked like they had killed pigs in her house. Damn I love Texas! I agree with a poster, I will vote for whoever, takes a strong stand against, the illegals.

I am not from NC. I grew up outside of and worked in NYC, hence, I've had a lot of dealings with immigrants. The legal immigrants are hard working, law abiding, industrious members of our society. They overcame tremendous obstacales to get here.
I had the honor to work with one gentleman from Poland. He was in the Polish merchant marine and when his ship was leaving NY harbor, he literally jumped ship into the Hudson River for freedom. Of course he was picked up by NYC Police an taken to the local station house for holding. Not considering him to be a threat, they didn't not put him into a cell and at the first opportunity, he "escaped" to an Army recruiting office and enlisted to "earn" his citizenship. He fought in Korea for two years. He was one of the most patriotic Americans I have ever met.
I've met many other "legal" immigrants with hardship stories of how they came here and what they had to overcome to stay and become proud Americans citizens.
On the other hand, we have illegals who crossing our borders think that they can flout our laws and never have any intention of becoming American citizens. In fact, there is a prevailing belief among Mexicans that the entire Southwest should be repatriated to Mexico. They fly Mexican flags, have no intention of learning English and thumb their noses at our country.
On top of this, I've seen several news reports, from reputable sources, of Mexican army personel crossing our border to protect drug smugglers.
