Why call Obama black rather than biracial?

I wonder why we (including the media) continue to call Barack Obama “black”? Isn’t the correct term “biracial”? His mother is white, his father was black. That does not make him black. If we accepted this fact, would it make a difference to those who are concerned about voting for a “black”?

My grandparents immigrated from Italy to the United States in the late-1880s. They were from northern Italy and had red hair, light skin and freckles instead of the usual dark olive skin one associates with Italians. I inherited this coloring, as did my three children. Does this make us “Italian”?

A red headed Italian.....never mind I'm married.

Dan, help me understand your logic. So, does Obama’s father’s desertion and his rearing by his grandparents mean that Obama should consider himself white because his grandparents showered him with love and care? I know a white couple who has adopted three, African American boys. These boys are not biracial. Should the boys grow up believing that they are white when their physical appearance obviously shows that they are African Americans? At the end of the day, the boys feel loved; and that is the most important thing.

Obama refers to himself as an African American. I think that most casual observers would view him as such. Tiger Woods invented a new category for himself; it was something along the lines of Cablanasian. I am sure that confused a geneticist.

Calling Barak black is a bit of shorthand and laziness from the reporters. They like stories in (forgive me) black & white simplicity and probably so do we. It make for a more interesting less nuanced story.

It will be much better when we go to that post-racial society.

Could be. It happened to Michael Jackson.

"Well, you know, he's got a funny name, and he doesn't look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five dollar bills"

Saying it four times in speeches to four different crowds, with three of those speeches being on the same day, means it's scripted. It's a calculated plan.

And his campaign admits it:
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Politics/story?id=5495348&page=1

"When pressed to explain the comment, Axelrod told "GMA" it meant, "He's not from central casting when it comes to candidates for president of the United States. He's new to Washington. Yes, he's African-American."

And, like we often see in this forum, no one cares but him. He's got to be the one to introduce it to the conversation because he's the only one that sees it as significant.

Pretty handy to go ahead and set up an excuse for failure, though. Shame how he obviously views his demographic.

No conundrum, just as the author stated, biracial.

Then again Obama is distantly related to Dick Cheney.

That in itself is a good enough reason to play down his white side!

And Thomas Jefferson fathered a child or children with Sally Hemmings in the late 1700's.........biracial presidential children, why not a biracial president? Maybe they are related to Cheney too? :)

That hasn't been proven conclusively and probably never will be. DNA evidence has shown a link but the Jefferson family, but the father could have been any one of 8 men, including Tom's brother Randolph and his 5 sons, who were in their teens and twenties when Sally Hemmings was having children.\

At least that's what the last thing I read about the subject says.

And Wild Bill Hickock:
"...family legend is that Wild Bill Hickok, he's a distant cousin of mine"
- Obama 7/08

Another reason I dislike him more and more as he tries to shape himself. His inherent assumption that everyone is dumb bothers the heck out of me. Think of how he views us when he says things like this. Ask why.

Yes, he's a distant cousin of Wild Bill. And I can say definitively that he's also a distant cousin of Gandhi, Pope John Paul II, and both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Martin Luther (there's a good poll question to determine eligibility to vote...). And King Tut, Mao Zedong, Hitler, and Mother Teresa.

And Jesse Helms.

He's a distant cousin every person reading this. The last number I read put the most distant relationship between any person in the world around the 50th cousin mark. There's a phrase associated with the idea, but I can't remember what it is. Anyway, all it takes is one person to do the trick. Genealogical relatedness between entire continents occurs as soon as one person from X has offspring with one person from Y (example- an Irishman impregnates a Cherokee woman in the U.S. around 1850 and it immediately makes Yeats a distant cousin of Jimi Hendrix. And Obama.)

He thinks the electorate is a collective moron. And it looks like he's probably right.

This is change?

I've been around Rufus. No problem with a black and/or female president, I'd just prefer one that I agreed with politically and Obama ain't it.
