Word 'liberal’ does not deserve the put-downs
Joan Stratton’s letter (July 25) included the words 'liberal” in a less-than-complimentary manner. This word is often used by politicians and others to negatively portray someone or some issue.
That being said, I thought it might be helpful and useful to offer the dictionary definition for “liberal” and a related word, “liberalism.” According to the American Heritage College Dictionary:
* “liberal” means “tending to give freely; open to new ideas for progress; broad-minded; free from bigotry; tolerant of the behavior of others; generous; favoring proposals for reform.”
* “liberalism” means “(a) political theory favoring civil and political liberties; government by law with the consent of the governed; protection from arbitrary authority.”
To be liberal and embrace liberalism are very American and also reflect the faith values which are a guide for many as they strive to serve God and those in need.

I agree with you Mr Kollar. Let's get some members of the "religious right" together and discuss the situation. Or maybe some "Neocons".
Thanks

I really dislike being negative, Bob, but those who post here use it like a cuss word. And unfortunately, they are so steeped in rhetorical political bulls--t they seem unable to grasp the real meaning of the words. Party first and foremost; thought second.

"l “liberal” means “tending to give freely; open to new ideas for progress; broad-minded; free from bigotry; tolerant of the behavior of others; generous; favoring proposals for reform.”"
That is the classical definition of the word, but lets look at modern political realities that have perverted it's meaning:
"“tending to give freely"--When it's someone else's money. Wealth re-distribution is a key element of the evolution of Liberalism into it's more refined form, which is socialism.
"Open to new ideas for progress"--Every new idea points to wealth redistribution but is gilded in heartfelt worthiness. Al Gore and his Climate Change initiatives are geared towards a carbon based economy, the biggest wealth redistribution scam in the history of the US. Mandated Gov.Health Care--bureaucratic growth of the government requiring more taxes and the inevitable decline of services, What government program was ever created that was superior to what the private sector does? I won't even go into Welfare, Food Stamps, Gov. Housing and things that sap the basic fundamentals of self-sufficiency from humanity.
"free from bigotry", Countless media hours devoted to Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Skip Alson, Nelson Johnson, Sheila Jackson Lee, The entire black liberation movement and the Congressional Black Caucaus. No bigotry there?
"Tolerant of the behavior of others"--Unless it's praying in a public venue, Calling Christmas, Christmas, a kid wearing a religious shirt in school, a confederate flag flying, declaration of a need for a "fairness doctrine" in broadcasting, or using the word "Liberal" to describe nutty ideas or actions.
"Generous"--individually it's a choice regardless of political leaning. Wholesale it's always with someone else's money.
"favoring proposals for reform"--Well DUH! how else will ideas that redistribute wealth, and change societal behavior get implemented without reform?

Modern liberalism promotes equality (at any cost) over freedom and individuality.

“Countless media hours devoted to Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Skip Alson, Nelson Johnson, Sheila Jackson Lee, The entire black liberation movement and the Congressional Black Caucaus. No bigotry there?”
Let’s start with your reference to the bigotry of the Congressional Black Caucus. I took the following from an article from the NY Times. “While Democratic black voters embraced Obama by ratios of 8 or 9 to 1 in a lot of districts, the 42 House members in the Congressional Black Caucus, for a time, split more or less down the middle between Obama and Hilary Rodham Clinton, and the country’s leading black ministers and mayors trended toward the Clinton camp.” So, we see that the Congressional Black Caucus, black ministers and mayors were actually more diverse when it came to their support of the democratic presidential nominees.
I can picture the hate that would literally drip from Sen. Helms’ lip whenever he would talk about anything that had to do with civil rights. His emotion would overcome his logic (which he rarely used) and he would fall back on his biases and prejudices towards blacks, which I think that you hold. The AMA recently issued an apology to the NMA. The NMA was started because the AMA wanted nothing to do with black doctors. The AMA’s members thought that black doctors were inferior and not worthy of their respect. I don’t think that you are too far removed from their thinking.

Anyone recognize the name of the famous socialist Norman Thomas (born over 100 years ago, so I won't fault you if you don't)? Have a quote:
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."

How does the American Heritage Dictionary define "People" and "Republic" (as in "People's Republic of North Korea")? Please. Trotting out a dictionary definition is the lowest form of intellectual activity, banned in all school assignments after 9th grade.
Like "conservative," "liberal" has many meanings. Some are good ("liberal democracy"); some less so ("card-carrying liberal"). Picking your favorite to score a cheap point isn't especially persuasive.
By the way, the Oxford English dictionary defines "conservative" as: "a well-bred person of impeccable morals, intelligence, and good taste uniquely suited to govern the lower classes."

In this election, being a 'Liberal' is something to be proud of. After eight years' of failed government, the GOP proved it could get elected, but it could not govern. How can a group of numbnuts who rail AGAINST government, actually make it run better?
Answer: They can't.
The GOP congress and the GOP President ran up the deficit and spent like 'drunken sailors'. They cut taxes on the wealthiest and to add insult to injury, they did it during wartime.
Einstein said it best: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
The right wingers, and neocons took over the party of Lincoln and paraded themselves about like saviors, until...until...those chickens came home to roost! An off budget war costing in excess of TEN BILLION per month, and every single reason they used to take us to war proved to be wrong.
Now they want us to think a man who voted with Bush 95% of the time can fix it???!! That dog don't hunt.
I never really liked Jack Cafferty, but this little ditty from him makes so much sense:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/18/cafferty.mccain/index.html
It was the "Conservatives" who spent us into the crapper, and ran up a wartime deficit while cutting taxes on the top 2%. It was the "Conservatives" who decimated our military and it was the "conservatives" who voted against the GI Bill!
What's "Conservative" about any of that??!!
I recently finished a book by Mickey Edwards, titled "Reclaiming Conservatism". I would recommend it to anyone out there whether right or left leaning. It really shows how out of touch the current GOP is, and how it sold its conservative soul to the religious right and the neocon movement.
Very sad how the "head in the sand gang" just repeat what they hear from Sean Hannity, Rush, and Bill O'Reilly and defend McCain when common sense tells them something entirely different.

"In this election, being a 'Liberal' is something to be proud of."
Then why has none proclaimed him or herself to be a "proud liberal".
Oh I know, if a candidate defines the definition of the beginning of life as "above my paygrade", well that explains it.

That's a great refinement, and maybe the most telling one yet. Apparently he's gotten some more information regarding the childbearing matter since giving his speech two months ago:
"We need fathers to recognize that responsibility doesn’t just end at conception... Any fool can have a child."
- B. Obama speaking at a church in Chicago, June '08

And last year:
"Don’t think that fatherhood ends at conception."
- B. Obama speaking at a church in Alabama, March '07

Obama '08, suckers.

Liberal, you show be proud of that group in Raleigh. The GI bill was eat up in pork. You should read the thing and not repeat the liberal media pick and chose version. Had this been a straight up and down bill, it would have been passed easily. Have you every noticed that all the Washington Experts, know nothing about what goes on in Raleigh.

Hey Bob, what is the "dictionary" meaning of the word "choice?" I couldn't find anything about slaughtering unborn children!
What is the "dictionary" meaning of the word bad? I understand that in many circles, bad means good! Liberals have spent the past 30 years making the word liberal, bad. No, the actual bad!
You liberals have worked hard to earn the scorn now associated with the word liberal.

Hey Bob:
You just might be a liberal if...
* You're sure the Constitution explicitly guarantees the right to abortion and gay marriage, but not the right to own a handgun.
* You'd be more upset about your favorite candidate being endorsed by the NRA than the Communist Party.
* You think the same criminals who use guns in the commission of a crime will just hand them over to comply with the law if guns are made illegal.
* You know that 86% of all income taxes are paid by the top 25% of income earners and you still feel that the rich "aren't paying their fair share of the taxes."
* You put a higher priority on oil pipelines possibly inconveniencing a few caribou than you do on lowering the price of gas for everyone in the country by drilling ANWR.
* You're worried that Osama Bin Laden might not get a fair trial if we capture him, but want George Bush thrown in prison for being too zealous in protecting us from Al-Qaeda.
* You get infuriated when you hear about the CEO of a Fortune 500 company making tens of millions of dollars, but don't see a problem with an actor, basketball player, or trial lawyer making the same amount.
* You're constantly seeing subtle, coded racism in campaign ads, but see nothing racist about blacks being promoted over more qualified white applicants because of Affirmative Action.
* You think it's obscene that oil companies are allowed to make 8.3 cents per gallon in profit with gas prices this high, but would never suggest cutting gas taxes to reduce the price.
* You think George Bush is a chickenhawk because he wanted to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan despite the fact that he only served in the National Guard, but you don't think the same about Barack Obama, who has never served in the military and probably couldn't find either country on a map without help.
* You think protesting outside of abortion clinics is extremism and should be illegal, but carrying around giant puppet heads while wearing a t-shirt that compares Bush to Hitler is just exercising your First Amendment rights.
* You think the case for global warming is proven without a shadow of a doubt, but that we need another century or two worth of evidence to figure out if capitalism and free markets work better than socialism.
* You believe the best way to fix the government screwing something up in the market is with...drumroll, please...more government intervention.
* You think the first thing we should have done when Russia invaded Georgia was to take the matter to the United Nations, where Russia sits on the UN Security Council.
* You spend your days criticizing the use of private jets, SUVS, and luxurious houses that consume enormous amounts of resources and then ride in an SUV to the airport, get on your private plane, and fly home to your luxurious house.
* You have more nice things to say about countries like Cuba and France than you do about your own country.
* You think the war in Iraq is unwinnable, but victory in the war on poverty is going to happen any day now if we can just get the Democrats back in charge.
* You won't even support English as our national language, but can't seem to understand why people worry about tens of millions of illegal aliens changing our culture.
* You think censorship is absolutely wrong; except when it's applied to conservatives on college campuses or on talk radio via the fairness doctrine.
* You get more upset about an American soldier accidentally killing a civilian than you do about a terrorist deliberately blowing up a school bus full of kids.
* You think Fox News is hopelessly biased to the right, but MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS call it right down the middle.
* You think the real hero of the Cold War was Mikhail Gorbachev.
* You couldn't care less about what Americans in states like Kansas or Virginia think of you, but you would be greatly upset if a Frenchman gave you a dirty look because you're an American.
* You think kids in public schools should have to watch Earth in the Balance and read Heather Has Two Mommies, but no piece of literature with the word "Jesus" on it should be allowed within a hundred yards of a school.

You might be a frivolous, hair-brained imbecile if the only computer skill you have is 'copy-and-paste.'
But then, you might just be full of s.... with no thoughts or solutions.
'Course, you could be both.
