Choice for vice president requires serious thought

I have been married to a fine man for 65 years. I am a woman who votes.

When I was 44 years old, I had five children. I knew then, and I know now, that my primary job in life was to nurture and raise these children to be good citizens in a healthy family. I had an excellent college education. I was extremely busy because I was also teaching high school science to help with family finances.

If an elderly man who wanted to be president had suggested that I be the vice president of the United States, I would definitely have thought he had very poor judgment about the real needs of this country. Please be serious about voting. It is not a laughing matter, even though it is very odd.

Ruth, you were right. Women are for nurturing, not for holding positions of power. Another over the level of high school teaching is beyond the reach of the female species. Thanks for not overreaching the limitations of your gender. I just wish the uppity gals of today like Sarah Palin would follow your lead.

LOL !!! This is too much fun!!!

Where have all the fire breathing Clinton/Ferraro feminists gone? All of a sudden the 'feminists' think a woman's place is in the kitchen or the bedroom serving her superior male counterpart's needs.

It's not about feminism...never was. It's about liberalism.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Ms. Maynard has been married 65 years. Assuming she got married around age 20 she is in her mid '80s. That means Ms. Maynard's mother was amongst the first women allowed to vote. Interesting.

Yes Ms. Maynard, women didn't run for VP back then. Like you my mom stayed home with 5 kids. Times have changed.

The very ones who loved Hillary for saying she wasn't going to stay home and bake cookies are now asking Sarah Palin to stay home and bake cookies. You are right Neo, the double standard is clear when there is an "R" behind the name.

hugh [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Ferraro has been consulting on some of the networks lately. She appears to have had a lot of the feminist rough edges polished off over the years and seems genuinely pleased with Palin.

Wonder where all these letters were, when Pelosi, took over the speaker of the house, when she had 5 children. Lets face it, if Palin had been a liberal, the media would have love her. Ruth, Alaska has a 5 billion dollar budget surplus, so I hear. Tell us how much budget surplus NC, has. Seems she knows how to run a state. When Kane of Virginia was a VP candidate for Obama, his experience was never question by the media. He has far less than Plain, plus he has screwed the budget of Virginia up big time. Hugh you are right, I saw Ferraro on tv last night, and she shocked me. Nothing but praise for Palin.

Dont you think it is a little different. Hillary has 1 child, that is a grown adult now. Palin, has 5, plus one teenager that is clearly trying to act like an adult.

Say either McCain or Obama were elected and something happened to them(which has pretty good odds either way), I would choose Biden over Palin. It has nothing to do that she is a woman but more of the way she has lived. She eloped with her husband when she was 24 and her family now doesnt have the best track record.

I know that is somewhat corny to look at it that way but I really dont feel either choice is a good one.

I also think McCain clearly was swinging votes, picking a woman after Obama didnt pick Clinton. And then to choose someone nobody knows nothing about. Backdoor slider...dont you think he will do that to the American people as well?

Oh really? Really? Well, what did I miss from these great GOP quotes:

“Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”

Or these great lines from a man who really and truly respects women:

“At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c_nt.”

~ John McCain, to his current wife Cindy McCain, in front of reporters

“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.”

~ John McCain at a GOP fundraiser in Washington

Or this jewel:
“They need the education and training.”

~ John McCain on why he opposed equal pay legislation designed to ensure women who already have equal education, training, and qualifications be paid comparable salaries as men in the same job positions.

And From Dan's fave, Rush Limbaugh:

"I have long told you, for example, Undeniable Truth of Life No. 24, written back in 1987: Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society."

Or another Limbaugh pearl:
"We must not allow ourselves to be deflected by the feminists who are anxious to force us to regard the two sexes as completely equal in position and worth”

Sure neo. Right. Once again you show how ignorant you really are. So if you want to see your thoughts, then take a look at this clip:

I'm smiling because you and Dan are laughing inside. :)

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Laughing inside? ...No, my little Canadian flag sporting friend, I'm laughing out loud. My daughter just axed me what was so funny.

The feminazis who supported Hill/Ferraro because they were...ahem... 'strong women' have now decided, oddly enough, that a conservative uterus just doesn't quite fill the bill. They were content to put up with the feminine rinos like Snow, Whitman, and Shays, but when they were faced with the real McCoy, their panic and worry became palatable.

Much fun to watch. I'm enjoying it a great deal.

I thought Limbaugh's truth of life concerning feminism was No. 23, although I could be wrong. And thanks for the Chelsea/Reno joke. Do I have permission to re-tell it as my own? Thanks.

Isn't that for Palin to decide? How is it that people now think that a woman doing it all is not a good mother and is limited by her family? Ah, the hypocrisy of the left in the morning.

"She eloped with her husband when she was 24 and her family now doesnt have the best track record."

Huh? Eloping at age 24 is what? Immaturity? I have a hard time understanding the issue here. Can the liberals work a little harder to make some issues here? Keep digging, you are getting deeper and deeper.

"Ruth, Alaska has a 5 billion dollar budget surplus, so I hear."

It's a lot easier to have a budget surplus when your state has like 12 people and has what seems to be a windfall-profits tax on oil companies signed into law by Governor Palin.

THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

rahrah,
You have a great point.

Being Governor of Alaska is like being the mayor of Boston. Same number of citizens.

This pick was a desperation pick for the fringe lunatics of the GOP. And as evidenced from the posts above....ONLY the base is ecstatic. Other than the "clapping for change" folks in Minneapolis----who are the same "clappers" for "W"....not once, but TWICE. Funny how McCain camp is trying to co-opt the Obama campaign. Imitation IS the purest form of flattery.

When you get down to brass tacks, Palin is little more than a circus sideshow at the County Fair. Everyone wants to look, but they all leave making comments under their breath about how freaky it was.

rahrah, in case you didn't catch it earlier, check Karl Rove's bull_hit out on this...the hypocrites fall for it every time.

This VP pick is the gift that keeps on giving.

As a liberal who posts comments here, I have to totally disagree with the letter writer. The number of children Sarah Palin has is an absolute non-issue. The same standard is never applied to male candidates. I may disagree with her politically, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that her children will always be well cared for, and how she does that is exclusively her and her husband's business. The conservatives who have posted comments here are totally justified in everything they've said.

bunny [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Let me get this straight. The Democrats think a woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she does with her body but not have the right to CHOOSE what she does. They appear to be so caring about the welfare of Gov. Palin's children, yet they don't give a second thought to the welfare of the baby as it's aborted.

Democrats: Where's your concern for a person's individual rights? Or do these rights only apply if they agree with your agenda?

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I'm with Mr_Free on this one.

brian444 [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

My feminazi wife agrees with Mr_Free as well. In fact, pretty much any reasonable person can see the double standard at work. That's what's so delightful to behold.

Look, Obama and Biden are playing this straight for a reason. Actually, two possible reasons. The first is that they're decent fellows who see critiques of Palin's non-nurturing tendencies as backward and wrong. The second is that their polling tells them that those attacks are politically idiotic. It's likely that both are true.

Thank you for your post Scott Free, at least a few on the left recognize the double standard.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

BTW, I posted a day or two ago regarding Biden. His wife and infant daughter were killed in an auto accident shortly after he was first elected in 1972. The accident left him with two badly injured young sons.

The job of a Senator is quite demanding. Shouldn't Biden have opted to take care of his motherless children instead of serving?

Interesting email from a friend...any comments?

Sarah did not tell the truth on a number of things in her acceptance speech. I remembered one fact, but researched it to make sure I am correct. She said "Alaska collected too much of the peoples tax so she returned it to them". Well, Alaska does not collect income tax or sales tax from the citizens. The state gov. is funded by a share of the profits of oil companies and state law requires a return of all unused funds to the citizens.

hugh [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

LC/DD doesn't get it. He's not one of the people McCain was targeting when he picked Palin as his running mate.

McCain has already written off LD/DD's vote as the one in three+ Americans who would crawl over broken glass to vote for the Presidential candidate that is farthest left of center.

He's not wasting his time trying to appeal to them, it's a lost cause vote wise and a complete waste of campaign capital to attempt to bring them into the fold.

From your link:

Alaska levies no individual income taxes, joining six other states with the same policy: Wyoming, Washington, Nevada, Florida, Texas and South Dakota.

Alaska levies no general sales or use tax on consumers, joining Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana and Oregon as the only other states with no sales tax. However, Alaska does collect $598 per capita in general sales taxes at the local level. Alaska's gasoline tax stands at 8.0 cents per gallon (lowest nationally), while its cigarette tax stands at $2.00 per pack of twenty (4th highest nationally). The gasoline tax was adopted in 1946 and the cigarette tax in 1949.

"Alaska Property Taxes: Comparatively High
Alaska is one of the 37 states that collect property taxes at both the state and local levels."

Alaska also has the 5th highest corporate tax in the nation. (something that should make you liberals experience blissful orgasm after blissful orgasm)

Where in your...ahem...'e-mail' did Palin state that Alaska collected too much "income and sales" tax?

Bless your heart.

Gallup says this morning that 29% more are now 'more likely' to vote for McCain because Palin is on the ticket. Evidently, Americans aren't swallowing the bilge put out by the lamestream media. (nor that put out by...ahem...e-mails making the rounds through the Koz crowd)

Fun to watch.

Ms. Maynard has a valid point whether you want to acknowledge it or not. Gov. Palin has Five children, one special needs child and one(unwed) teenage pregnant child.

It sounds like abstinence may not be taught at home and if it's not taught at home how can a leader expel those thoughts and ideas to others?

Where is the "Moral Majority" that was so prevalent in the 1980's in the Republican party?

I can see Dr. Jerry Falwell turning over in his grave with this Republican Vice-President nominee.

I feel a hint of hypocrisy here, perhaps some of you are smitten by Gov. Palin's beauty.

Let's all agree on one thing here. Obama is better looking than McCain and Palin is better looking than Biden (or Cheney). ;-)

We are all stuck in the goo ... thems' think they’s better then you .. thems' being elite .. and you are the salt-of-the-earth. The funny thing is “the other side” believes the same thing – and can prove it equally well: you believe you are better then they .. which makes you the elite .. and thems' be the salts-of-the-earth.

This is a game, a deliberate nasty political game, and we have all become stuck. Everyone is made to believe they are an “ordinary American pitted against a system which doesn’t give a damn about what’s really bothering the people of this country today”.

We’re all a bunch of suckers. This divisive game really takes hold after the Kennedy assassination(*):

Goldwater vs. Johnson - Voters pull the “Democrat for President” lever because to do anything else would cause the end of civilization.
Nixon vs. McGovern: The same voter pulls the “Republican for President” lever because to do anything else would cause the end of civilization.

Violence under Johnson provides “proof” of the rationale: Black vs. White; Hippies vs. Young Americans for Freedom; The first wave of ‘nam vet’s (pre-’67’ish) vs. the second wave of ‘nam vet’s (post-’67’ish).

Ronald Reagan in 1966: “Look at that sign over there, ‘Make love, not war’—I bet that guy can’t do either.” … ha ha ha … countered by the other side’s risqué suggestion he’d appoint then sex symbol Elizabeth Taylor as Superintendent of Public Instruction … ha ha ha
Ronald Reagan also in 1966: “I’d like to harness their youthful energy with a strap.”

Nixon’s “Silent majority” and “Law and Order” campaign(**).
Spiro’s nattering nabobs of negativity vs. the hardworking salt of the earth.

It continues to this day, except on the conservative side it’s morphed from “Hey hardworking salt of the earth: Vote conservative because we’re going to pull you up into the middle class” to “Vote conservative because we’re consistent with your moral values.” The Liberals are still arrogant - less so - but they still want to take money from their version of elites and give it to their version of the hardworking salt of the earth.

It’s Americans alienating themselves from Americans - with rare times of unity like the few weeks after towel-heads drive big airplanes into tall building. Then it’s back to Us against Them. This election year is no different; sucks for America.

You're right again, Neo. Americans aren't swallowing the bilge put out by the lamestream media .. They are swallowing the bilge put out by the likes of you - that the Palin's of the world represent a truely Moral Majority who will assure - through the elimination of government - that individual responsibility and accountability will lead us to the promised land, and they will keep the government in your life to assure you are acting in the individually responsible manner they dictate.

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Whether they're swallowing bilge or not, the polls are undeniable. You're entitled to your opinion as to why...I to mine.

The frantic 'e-mails' being posted, a small army of liberal 'journalists' crawling all over Alaska looking for dirt on Palin, and the stupefied liberal cable 'news' hosts latching on to every little negative tidbit that can get their nervous little hands on and throwing it at the wall, hoping some of it will stick, isn't working too well.

Fun to watch.
