Obama’s religious beliefs shouldn’t matter to voters
Barack Obama’s religious allegiances have been a hot topic during this election process. The son of a Muslim father turned atheist and a Christian mother turned agnostic, schooling at a Catholic as well a Muslim school, and attendance at Christian churches and Buddhist temples. It’s hard to know for sure just what he believes.
However, the bigger question is, “What does it matter what Obama believes?” He’s running for president, not pastor at a church.
In what way will his presidency be affected if he prays to God or Allah before he goes to bed at night? Why is it when we look at someone who has chosen to take a different spiritual path, we conclude they can’t possibly hold dear the same things we do?
The sad thing about all of this is how we have treated the Islamic faith as a disease that our Democratic nominee hasn’t been able to rid himself of. I am a Christian, as is Obama, and I am not so arrogant and misinformed to think that my faith has a monopoly on morality.

I don't care that Obama is a whatever religion. I do care about his inexperience.

Here's my rankings for the political desirability of different religions:
1) Christians
2) Jews
3) Catholics
4) Native Buddhists
5) Evangelicals
6) Non-evangelical atheists
7) Mormons
8) Hindus (higher castes only, please)
====== voting threshold
8) Pagans
9) Evangelical atheists
10) Muslims
11) Buddhist "converts"
12) Unitarians
13) Mindless New Age Hippies
14) moveon.orgists
15) Canadians
So if Obama is really a Muslim like they say, I'd never vote for him. Aren't those the guys who try to blow up everything?
Posted on September 1, 2008 4:24 AM
No, wait, I just read the letter again. I realize now how close-minded I was. I repent. All religious persuasions are now acceptable to me. I'm voting for Obama even if he is a Muslim.

Heck, I thought Liberals did not believe in God.
How wrong I was.
Michael Moore, Gustav proves there is a God in heaven.
Don Flower. Gustav proves God is on our side.
Doug Clark, we do not need more wind from the republicans.
Amazing many liberals could care less about the suffering these poor people. Let just keep pushing our liberal agenda.
Of course John McCain,we now must realize we are all Americans.
John, does that include Moore, Flower and Clark ? Who put there liberal agenda first.
Of course saying that Obama, said we must put politics aside now.

A video clip of Don Fowler. A large natural disaster is approaching and he can think of nothing but political ramifications. Pathetic but not surprising.

McCain is doing what a president should do, putting the lives of fellow Americans first.
As for Obama and religion, I simply find it hard to believe he could subscribe to the hate spewing teachings of Jeremiah Wright for 20 years. Oprah had the sense to get out of that place.

Odd how the agnostic/atheists flock to the lower case messiah while branding anyone with a little 'r' beside their name as a religious fanatic when the word "God" is spoken in one of their speeches.
****************************************************
Dog, speaking of hurricane Gustav, have you noticed that the Blanco/Naggin 'Hurricane Emergency Plan' has been shelved this time around? That 'plan' being sitting on their backsides and screeching "it's Bush's fault" while their constituents stood frozen like deer in the headlights and watched the waters rise because their gubberment didn't come and pick them up in time.
...can you say "Jindal"?
Posted on September 1, 2008 7:16 AM
well, maybe not odd...maybe hypocritical is a better word.
Posted on September 1, 2008 7:19 AM
"I am a Christian, as is Obama" (maybe that's the issue?).........."In what way will his presidency be affected if he prays to God or Allah "........ perhaps we should start with commandment #1 and work from that premise and examine what ramifications one might face by worshiping 'other' gods !
calling oneself a christian is not what we say we are, it is who we are, how we live and what we believe.

Those shameful, godless liberals. Don't they know this is how to show concern for loss of life?:

Mr. Bedrosian, your view on Obama's religious leaning is best summed up in the last sentence of your letter. Those who think that Obama is a Muslim, don't hold the same view that you do when it comes to religious tolerance. Though he has said that he is not a Muslim, there are those who keep perpetuating that lie. I can't remember the exact lines of his speech, but, Obama said something to the effect that Republicans then resort to fearmongering to smear their opponent(s). They don't care how they win - just that they win. It almost boils down to having little or no morals.

And all this concern for potential disaster victims is touching. If only we didn't remember the vitriol so many of you had for the victims three years ago, one might buy it as sincere. There were people who did what they were told, went where they were sent, and followed the instructions. And they died. So when the outrage started to flow, what did you do? Blamed the victims.
"Hypocritical" is a good way to describe this mock outrage about a couple of off-hand comments that don't amount to squat.

Unimportant. I wonder how often things like this are brought up by supporters to direct discussions away from the important things. Like oil reserves, for example:
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-s115/text
(sponsor- Obama)
SEC. 101. TERMINATION OF CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF THE ENERGY POLICY ACT OF 2005.
...
"(5) Section 357 (42 U.S.C. 15912) (relating to comprehensive inventory of OCS oil and natural gas resources)."
--
"Obama's "Oil SENSE Act" would repeal the 2005 Energy Policy Act's authorization of these inventories. S.115 would leave decision makers with Carter administration maps drawn with pre-PC technology."
"In... 1999, President Clinton's Energy Department evaluated the environmental quality of 1970s' 2-D equipment against last decade's 3-D technology. With the latter, Energy concluded, "Overall impacts of exploration and production are reduced because fewer wells are required to develop the same amount of reserves."
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/374020_murdockoinline08.html
It looks like the intentional roadblocking of modern technologies to evaluate our potential for energy independence with an established infrastructure by a presidential candidate. But yeah, let's talk about Muslim nonsense.

His religion hasn't been my concern at all, but the church he has attended and supported and the "preaching" of the "reverend" Wright causes me GREAT concern!

Howie G:
With Katrina, there were mistakes made all up the line. Lessons were learned. To put blame on any one person or one party merely shows one's stupidity.
With Gustav, what were the Republicans supposed to do? Go ahead with the convention as planned? You would have criticized that too. It just kills you to think that there are compassionate Republicans, doesn't it?
Posted on September 1, 2008 3:20 PM
Bunny,
I know many compassionate Republicans, just as I know many compassionate Democrats. I was responding to the portrayal of liberals, and reminding some of our recently compassionate neighbors how they behaved three years ago, when people died and lost their homes, after following the orders they were given. And how they were blamed for their own deaths and loss. You can twist it all you want, but these "compassionate Republicans" posting here have not always been so compassionate. That makes them hypocrites.
I didn't say a word about the convention. I think the wait and see approach is the right one, and will probably prove to be prudent. Next time you want to know what I think, just ask -- don't guess on my behalf.

"when people died and lost their homes, after following the orders they were given. And how they were blamed for their own deaths and loss."
What orders are you talking about, Howie G?
Posted on September 1, 2008 5:10 PM
The evacuees who were not able to leave NO, were told to go to the convention center and the Superdome as shelters. They did as they were told. Days later, they were still without rescue or services, and in fact dying. And some of the "compassionate brethren" were criticizing them for their circumstance (while the victims were still waiting for relief). "What do you expect when you live below sea level?" "What do you expect when you start riots and revert to gang mentality?" (A rumor that was never substantiated.)
The fact is that more people evacuated NO and the gulf than any other evactuation in history. Close to 90% got out if memory serves. And for those who couldn't get out, rather than rescuing them, people started bickering. Then, the greatest indignity of all, their fellow Americans turned on them. Disgusting. And to try to portray a couple of stupid off hand comments with this mock outrage is a joke, considering the indignity displayed for years now toward these people who suffered so greatly.
That's what I'm talking about Roger.

Gustav:
Jindal: "Stay at your own risk"
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article4645522.ece
Katrina:
Ray Nagin: Flooded School Buses Not My Fault
"New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said Friday that it wasn't his fault city school buses weren't mobilized to facilitate the Hurricane Katrina evacuation he ordered.
Appearing on NBC's "Dateline," Nagin was asked by host Stone Phillips: "What was mobilized? I mean were national guard troops in position. Were helicopters standing by? Were buses ready to take people away?"
"No. None of that," the Big Easy mayor replied.
"Why is that?" an incredulous Phillips asked.
Nagin replied: "I dont know. That is question for somebody else."
*********************************************************
Not "mock outrage"...just pointing out the difference when competency is displayed. NO was evacuated and there will be no pointing the finger at Bush and blaming him for all their woes.
Posted on September 1, 2008 6:51 PM
Howie, emotional posturing doesn't concern me much. Both sides are using it for themselves. Some claiming hypocrisy, some decrying lack of whats-it.
Which exact orders are you talking about?
Posted on September 1, 2008 6:52 PM
".can you say "Jindal"?"
Blanco/Nagin and Jindal plans were about the same. Jindal just executed his plan 3 days before instead of 12 hours before the hurricane.
Posted on September 1, 2008 7:18 PM
Howie, I have close ties to Louisiana, I had just a much concern, then, as I do now.
I also had concerns for the floods in the mid west, and the victims of all of the tornadoes
Now just how much press did they get?
Blanco, screwed up every thing she touched. She was to busy, styling and profiling.
I can tell you, that hurricanes in Louisiana, are not new. Nor was Katrina, the worst. It was used as political ploy. The people on the Gulf Coast took care of their selves for years.
Did you folks see any one crying for Mississippi, during Katrina? It was all about NO.

Howie g,
Ever wonder how these radical right wing zealots would have reacted if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant when she was 16?
I think we KNOW how they would respond.
Guess that "abstinence only" education doesn't work after all. LOL!
Seems that "family values" gets a face lift every time a right wing religious nutjob hits a new low. They now say Ted Haggard is "cured" from being a homosexual....and might make an appearance at the GOP convention.
Sarah Palin has experience commanding the Alaska National Guard--gee, that's about the size of a good sized Boy Scout Troop from Mebane. Palin reminds me of Thomas Eagleton in '72.
But I do enjoy the "experience" quotes from Hugh.

Brian007,
I just wanted to include those groups you missed.
16. Conservative Ideologues.
17. Those wearing button down oxford shirts.
18. Anti choice Zealots.
19. “True” Christians.
20. Late night comedians, the priests of high humor.
21. Bushites, the new religious/terrorist group that requests obedience to it's policies of tax, spend, waste, shoot and think later.

"Ever wonder how these radical right wing zealots would have reacted if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant when she was 16?"
The subject matter is Obama and morphed into Gustav, yet Demon Deacon contributes with the latest juicy tabloid tidbits from the Kos/Micheal Moore/Huff Post/Mediamatters/Soros directives.
Don't I remember Demon Deacon trashing the National Inquirer recently regarding John Edwards dalliances? Seems when it involves anyone related with an "R" he changes stances.
Even Sen. Obama expressed a respectable opinion today, kudos to him:
“Let me be as clear as possible,” said Obama, “I think people’s families are off-limits and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.”
Obama said reporters should “back off these kinds of stories” and noted that he was born to an 18 year-old mother.
“How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that’s off-limits.”
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/01/obama-palin%E2%80%99s-family-off-limits/
You may want to take a lesson from Sen. Obama Demon Deacon. He is clearly a much more decent man, and I stress man.
He certainly shows much more class than you and your Kos/Micheal Moore/Huff Post/Mediamatters/Soros sycopants. Enjoy the swill.
Posted on September 1, 2008 9:26 PM
BTW, my bet is Howie has much more class than to buy in with your tabloid sensationalism Demon Deacon. Let's see if anyone else does, I doubt it, otherwise you are isolated as usual. That includes Sen. Obama to his credit.

Molly the Dog: "21. Bushites, the new religious/terrorist group that requests obedience to it's policies of tax, spend, waste, shoot and think later."
Dear Molly,
In your hysteria, you have used the contraction for "it is" rather than the proper possessive form of the prounoun "it" ("its"). Although I share your concern over the excessive taxation and spending that have taken place under the Bush administration, I cannot condone this sort of solecism.
Posted on September 1, 2008 10:08 PM
"Ever wonder how these radical right wing zealots would have reacted if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant when she was 16?
I think we KNOW how they would respond"
DD/LC, do you use Tarot cards or a Ouija board for your clairvoyance?
Posted on September 1, 2008 11:25 PM
the neObamacons have the same religious leaning as the BushLite team....political power. This is most corrupt cult humans can participate in. When power is achieved it must be used on someone. Few individuals put it down after having it in their hands. The most dangerous situation is that Bush the Dimmer stumbled into power by representing a party which decided longer term power seekers were less electable. The less electable is now their candidate. Now the power given to Bush will fall into the hands of 2 people who are pretentious with their qualifications to lead or change with no mention of the Constitutional encroachments of the last regime. Mussolini said that men will grow weary of liberty and return to the infatuation of political power, away from the rights of the individual, away from individual liberties and away from the burden of responsibility which goes with liberty.
Posted on September 1, 2008 11:36 PM
Jack-
Are you clinging bitterly to your religion?
Posted on September 2, 2008 8:49 PM
The "dumbing down" continues with this great video of Sarah Palin praying for a pipeline! Gotta love the Republican GOD-----just pray for prosperity, pipelines, etc and "PRESTO" you'll have it! No depth here, just pretty basic 16th century nutjobs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k
Whew! What nutjob! Doesn't believe in birth control---unless you consider "Abstinence Only", and she thinks creationism should be taught in schools!
And what about those "Feminazi's " that Rush has ranted against for thinking they could have it all.....now all of a sudden the worm turned and they are gushing and giggling over this lady for being able to rear a family and leave a new born for the campaign trail? Methinks the hypocrisy has hit a crescendo.
McCain's judgement is now a HUGE campaign issue. Poor Romney.
Posted on September 3, 2008 8:13 AM
oxymoron, can't you ever comment on a letter for it's content? No, you have to use them for your own little soapbox.
Your rants just reaffirm what I've always heard. If you say nothing, people may think you are dumb. However, after opening your mouth you erase all doubt.
Posted on September 3, 2008 9:32 AM
Notice how Demon Deacon got whacked by Obama's own words regarding the juicy tabloid pregnant daughter post, so now he switches to the fact that Palin openly admits she is a Christian and prays!!! Oh the horror!!! A few days ago he posted internet tabloid rumors that Palin's daughter actually gave birth to Palin's 5th child.
From someone who blasted the National Enquirer for it's story regarding John Edwards, methinks Demon Deacon lowers himself below the level of the NE. Please keep up the jewels.
Posted on September 3, 2008 6:43 PM
You are not going to believe this Demon Deacon. A white man, John Shillington, and a black woman, Ruby Brown, sung "America the Beautiful" together at the RNC a few minutes ago. I'll remind you, the lyrics of America the Beautiful contain the word........brace yourself.................God!!!
What 16th century nutjobs.
Posted on September 3, 2008 7:15 PM
Danny boy,
I'll concede to the John Edwards story, the Strom Thurmond story if you will concede that this woman is a flaming hypocrite whose credentials are suspect. In fact, this VP choice says more about McCain's judgement than it says about the poor right wing extremist whose state's population would fit into Minneapolis-St. Paul almost FOUR times!
FACT: If Sarah Palin had not been an "ABSTINENCE ONLY" advocate, this would not have grown legs. She is a but another right wing hypocrite, who scares the bejesus out of most moderates and independents---she believes that abortion should be outlawed even if the life of the mother is in danger or there is a rape or heaven forbid, incest!
She prays to God, publicly, in church, for a pipeline across Canada!
Gosh, I suppose I should quit praying for the poor in spirit, the meek, and peacemakers!
Obviously, this woman bothers God with material matters, political matters, and who knows what else! Wonder if she prayed for a new car at Christmas?
She attends and speaks at rallies of the Secessionist Party, of which her husband is a member!
So I say to you, little Dan, if Reverend Wright was "unpatriotic" and if Michelle Obama was "unpatriotic" then what in the hell is a woman who has advocated Alaska leaving the United States of America??? Cat got your tongue?
Posted on September 3, 2008 8:03 PM
"A white man, John Shillington, and a black woman, Ruby Brown, sung "America the Beautiful" together at the RNC a few minutes ago."
Dan,
The RNC should be ashamed of itself.
The (36) thirty six African Americans who are in attendance are getting trotted out constantly, and should be PAID for their face time. Of course, based on the Armstrong Williams fiasco, they might be getting compensated for their on camera appearances.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-01-06-williams-whitehouse_x.htm
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A56330-2005Jan7.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/08/national/08education.html
Why do you suppose the GOP cannot attract people of color? Maybe their opposition to civil rights back in the sixties? Maybe McCain voting against a Martin Luther King Holiday? Oh, what am I thinking here......it has to be the fault of the Democrats...that's what Rush & Hannity say!
To boil this down to terms you might be able to understand, that means you have about a 1.5% chance of seeing a person of color at the GOP convention.
Dan, I am sure you just rationalize it all the way FoxNews tells you to do it...but I just wonder how you square it with your "family values" and your Catholicism.
