Raise the drinking age

Where in anybody’s right mind is lowering the legal drinking age a good idea? All one has to do is look around and see car wrecks, domestic disputes, robberies and deaths caused by consumption of alcohol. I’ve seen four of my family members die from alcoholism.
How can we say alcohol is a good thing?

I know people like to party and have a good time, but I just can’t see how the buzz from alcohol is worth it. If anything, the drinking age should be raised.

I’m watching my generation (ages 15-30) fall apart from alcohol abuse. Why are we discussing this? We ought to be improving things rather than making them worse.

It is really less about the legal drinking age, and more about the culture of drinking in this country.

If we want to decrease the problems with alcohol, we have to change the way in which we view drinking. College kids binge because they think that's what having a good time in college means. High school kids think the same thing.

But Prohibition doesn't work, and never did. Raising the drinking age will just increase the size of the populace who drink illegally, and therefore to excess because a big part of the thrill is flouting the law.

Support for a lower drinking age derives from a concept called "adulthood." In earlier historical periods, "adults" (or "grown-ups") were considered to be responsible for themselves, able to make their own decisions and to be held responsible for them. Naturally, modern liberalism opposed the concept, since "adults" did not comprise either of their core constituencies: paternalists do-gooders (who think they know better than everyone else what's good for them) and perpetual children (who believe it their right to suckle at the beneficent governmental teat throughout their lives). Hence the taboo that surrounds an 18-year old consuming a beer.
