Residents uninformed
Regarding recent letters to the editor:
It feels like I’m living in a different world. Indeed, I did move back here and now notice the lack of knowledge about our city, county, state and federal governments.
The Washington Post, New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times and many other sources for news are available online. If one does not have a computer, surely a family member or friend could keep you up-to-date on what is going on in the world.
Many well-informed people are moving to the Southeast, which will, I think, balance out the racist, extreme-right residents. For that, I am very glad.
As for drilling off the East Coast, it’s far too close to my backyard for my comfort. Until more information is available, that should be the last resort. Much of the Southwest — including Louisiana — is simply ugly; drilling detracts from the beauty of the tourist attractions. If I spend the money and time traveling, I want to see beauty — not oil rigs.
And “Yes, we can ...” elect a biracial man as president. The South is benefiting from more informed people moving here. Hurray for the well-educated and well-informed. We need many more of them.

This is a joke. Right?
So much vitriol, elitism and snobbery in one letter begs belief.
Oh, by the way, you neglected to reference the dailykos and moveon.org. Pantheons of enlightened truth.
"Many well-informed people are moving to the Southeast, which will, I think, balance out the racist, extreme-right residents. For that, I am very glad."
On second thought, there is the smell of true believer in this sentence. What a charmed and genteel life you must lead.
I don't think even the crusted-over hard left respondents on these blogs would stoop to the seventh level of hell you are writing from.

Could you manage to tell us why we should vote for Obama, without using the words hope, change and believe?

I grew up in the north, and there are ignorant people everywhere. There are also wonderful people everywhere. Why are you so hung up on geography?
I love NASCAR and fried chicken after church and gospel music and sweet tea........if I didn't I'd move back north and shovel snow for the rest of my life (BORING!)

This should help you assimilate well with your neighbors in Gibsonville, Carol.
Smart move. Do you tutor?

This letter can't be serious. No one is that moronic.
Posted on September 2, 2008 7:16 AM
you can not travel with out oil rigs. Your hot air may, work well in a hot air balloon. It will take your car nowhere.
Why do northern people retire and move to the south?
Know of one in the south that retires to move north.
What happens if China , drills for oil off the Carolinas coast?
Must be a Bev Perdue support. She also full of it.
Many of us wrote her a letter, about drilling off the coast of NC, no one I know received a reply. She says she all for drilling of the coast in her ads. So why want she answer our question.

Carol Smith: "Many well-informed people are moving to the Southeast..."
She's right about that. Few well-informed people move to the Northeast; those that do (like me, for 25 years) tend move back South.
The flow is all towards the South. Now, why might that be?
My theory is simple. Fair amounts of North Carolina and other parts of the South have not YET --- the operative word is "yet" --- been messed up by big government liberals; that is, has not yet rendered living in North Carolina exceedingly expensive --- via exorbitant levels of taxation.
That's the direction we are headed, of course. But we've a ways to go before the North-to-South exodus ends because quality-of-life-per-dollar-spent is equally bad everywhere.

"I don't think even the crusted-over hard left respondents on these blogs would stoop to the seventh level of hell you are writing from."
I beg to differ WJ, just wait and see.
It's curious as to why such a smug, elitist, holier than thou person like Carol would opt to reside in tiny Gibsonville, home of Kay Yow and Torry Holt. If she is as well educated as she claims then certainly her skills could land her employment out of fly over country.

Carol sounds like Keith Olbermann in drag.

I laughed out loud after reading this letter to the end. And I knew most of the people who post in this blog would respond with righteous indignation, which made me laugh again.
Carol was right about ignorance in the south. She simply forgot to mention there are ignorant people and actions throughout America and the world. Ignorance has no monopoly in the south any more so than the north, east or west.

Based on its sheer obnoxiousness, I have to think this letter is a plant from the McCain campaign. If so, it's brilliant, since it will surely swing votes his way.
Posted on September 2, 2008 10:18 AM
+1 on it being a McCain plant.
"Much of the Southwest — including Louisiana"
That's hilarious considering the "well-educated" praise Carol ladles over herself.

LTE Carol Smith stated, ". . . I did move back here . . . ."
Why? (big fish, little pond, perhaps?)
The contents of your letter elicited (note use of a four-syllable word from a North Carolinian) the following:
I am sad (oops -- only one syllable) that your attitude has found a home in NC .
I take umbrage (oops -- only two syllables) at your comments.
I will not be mollified (oops -- only three syllables) by any explanation of, or excuse for, such disparaging (four syllables again) comments as you made regarding the intelligence and/or level of education of the many fine people who have lived in North Carolina for generations.
I could go on with words containing five, six, seven, or more syllables, but I deem a two-syllable word a fair assessment of your attitude toward North Carolinians: HOGWASH.

Why bless your heart Carol I feel I need to quote an educated favorite son of the South, Lewis Grizzard, "Delta is ready when you are". And may I add that odd numbered interstates run North as well as South and the closest ones to you would be I-85, I-77, or I-95. Please have a safe trip, don't come back ya'll. All my best to you and yours.

Mr. Ellis,
It is not that Mr. Obama can give us hope and change as it is that we are running away from tax, spend, waste, create a larger government, shoot and ask questions later, type of leadership and political party full of religious “my god” zealots. It has been a complete disaster.
These are the reasons why people are attracted to Obama. Most are willing to take the risk to escape more of the same; irresponsibility, failure, cronyism, corruption, loss of law, war without reason, and even lack morals....what other reasons does a sane person need to know who to support.
Former Republican

Molly,
Obama/Biden offers the same tax, spend, waste, creat(tion of)e a larger government, shoot....etc. as the Bush admin. Just the other side of the same coin.
By the way, there are as many "my god" zealots in the democratic party- witness the comments by party bigwigs as Gustav approached LA., and those who seem to have developed a perverse sort of morality in attacking Sarah Palin's daughter for the same activity that a large portion of their constituency engages in.
Your anti-Christian bigotry is showing.
Again, you offer no reason to vote for Obama, just more leftist rhetoric.
Never been a republican.

MTD, are you insinuating that anyone who doesn't support Obama is insane?

Very uncomfortable to watch, no matter what your political persuasion might be.
Anyone who DOES support Sarah Palin is so far out of the mainstream they can't be taken seriously. Guess the abstinence only thing didn't work out too well for her family, now did it?

Mr. Ellis,
The Clinton Administration reduced the federal government employment to lowest in 40 years, secondly, he left the government while running a annual budget surplus over most of his tenure. He also had a economic policy that beared more fruit for the citizens of this country, rather than having a rotating door for the Treasury Secretary as in the Bush Adminstration. This is not same of the old stuff!
Dan,
One does not have to be sane to support Obama or McCain. Their are ill informed voters, blissful voters, insane voters, sane voters, one issue voters, bury your head in the sand voters, and many others. I am sure there will be some insane voters for Obama.
Many of us only hope that good debate based on facts and logic will somehow shine through
even as some citizens create there own sense of history to fit their values or resort to name calling as a way to sway someone or create a blogger alliance.
One can argue values to support a candidate, but changing history and facts or denying what has occurred in the current administration and ones of the past is simply destructive and fruitless for all the readers.

Carol, I'll bet you are really popular in Gibsonville, being so much smarter than everyone else. You must be be one of the "enlightened" ones.
As for oxymoron, he never could follow the meaning of an LTE, without saying something dumb that has little or nothing to do with the letter. His gift is "a rant againt anything other than his liberal BS"
Posted on September 3, 2008 9:13 AM
"Here's the darling of the conservatives..."
Yep, I understand anyone of Christian faith who publically admits it scares the daylights out of the likes of Demon Deacon & Co.
"Many of us only hope that good debate based on facts and logic will somehow shine through..."
Agreed MTD, unfortunately the the current campaign debate and media coverage has been reduced to the pregnancy of a 17 year old girl.
