Depressions and GOP frequently go together
I decided to look up the recent history of depressions in the United States. I wanted to know which president was presiding, and whether he had inherited a bad situation.
The depression of 1873-1879: U.S. Grant, a Republican, was president from 1869-1877.
Rutherford B. Hayes, another Republican, was president from 1877-1881.
The depression of 1893-1898: Benjamin Harrison, another Republican, was president from 1889-1893. Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, was president from 1893-1897.
The panic of 1907: Teddy Roosevelt, another Republican, was president from 1901-1909.
The Great Depression 1929-1941: Calvin Coolidge, another Republican, was president from 1923-1929. Herbert Hoover, another Republican, was president from 1929-1933. Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, was president from 1933-1945.
The second great depression: 2008-?: George W. Bush, another Republican, is president.
In 1905. George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
I remember the gas lines from Nixon/Ford. I remember buying my house at 12.75 percent interest under Reagan. I remember the 1990-91 recession under Reagan/Bush. Do you remember Bush Sr.’s “Read my lips”?
Can you afford to elect another Republican? Vote Democratic. Vote Obama.

Tom,
You're correct but I'm afraid you're preaching to the choir-- those on the right will never let facts get in the way of their agenda.

It's a lot more complex than Tom implies.

My daddy was a yellow dog Democrat and a Quaker, my mama was a Republican and a Southern Baptist, so I heard a lot of "discussions."
My mama said Democrats led us to war and my daddy said Republicans let us to depression. Seems the Republicans in the last 7 years have managed to do both. Is this called crossing the lines?

Carol,
You make the matrix of the letter manifest.
-------------------
George W. Bush will go down as the Herbert Hoover of our time. Hoover was known for the quote, "Prosperity is just around the corner" as he supported his base---not so dissimilar from the Wall Street fat cats who overwhelmingly lean to the GOP today.
John McCain offers nothing short of a symmetrical administration with Bush.
Instead of "Hoovervilles" we would have "McCainvilles" for those without jobs, houses, etc.

I was in New York last fall, so I must be the cause of the current Wall Street crisis.
1873-1879 Post Civil War, bank failures - no central bank in US.
1893-1898 Caused by railroad overbuilding and shaky railroad financing which set off a series of bank failures and a run on the gold supply.
1907 - Attempt to take over the copper market failed.
1929-1941 Post World War I. Caused by the vast economic boom in the 1920s while the rest of the world had not recovered. Central bank playing with the money supply.
1973- Arab Oil Embargo from OPEC's reaction to Yom Kipper War.
1981 - Carter Malaise - Reagan inherited both high interest rates and skyrocketing inflation. It is the primary reason Carter did not win reelection.
1990 - Gulf War and spike in oil prices.
Point being that one can cherry-pick information without looking at the total picture and draw most any conclusion they want.

I do remember having 20% inflation and 20% interest rates while Jimmy Carter was president.

Billy said: "those on the right will never let facts get in the way of their agenda."
He could have said "those on the left will never let facts in the way of their agenda".
This was a thought I might have had while parked in a gas line durring Carter's turn in the barrel.

Can you afford to elect another Republican or Democrat? Recent events say no. Vote Barr.

Oak Ridge Runner remembers “ .. having 20% inflation and 20% interest rates while Jimmy Carter was president.”
We all do, ORR. Can you detail a single – and I freaking mean ONE – thing Carter did to cause that? ONE freaking thing - after fifteen years of assassinations, Vietnam, the final release of the Gold Standard, Nixon’s Price Controls, Watergate, OPEC 1 with a 5% base rate of inflation before OPEC, OPEC 2, a recession in 1974-1975 and the resulting Humphrey-Hawkins bill, and a long declining economy - Carter did not do that he should have do to prevent it? If you cite “Carter Malaise” you need to be specific .. but check out first the inflation rates in Germany, Japan, and especially the United Kingdom .. they were all higher than here in the USA.
So in 1979 Carter gets a Volcker-led Federal Reserve that quickly put a first priority on controlling inflation at the
risk of a deeper-than-usual recession ... which Reagan suffers though in 1982 and by 1984 becomes the Hero.
Here’s some Irony – from the “Malaise” speech (he never used that word, btw): “"In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does but by what one owns." … sound like the Rhetoric we now daily from the CON’ies criticizing everyone but their own.
I’ll hold my breath ‘til death … waiting for from ORR … a reply.

"In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does but by what one owns." …
That is where we are today, and I don't see changes coming soon.

Too simplistic is right, but Republicans tend to deregulate even though most major businesspeople are outright crooks repeatedly prove they cannot be trusted.
And before you jump, I own a small (28 employees) business and I hate taxes, too.
But since ethics is not even taught in business school government must regulate and enforce. Do you believe that ads tell the truth? If you do, I have a bridge in Alaska I want to sell you. If you do not, ask yourself why we allow lies to be told to our children and to our fellow citizens? Because business is corrupt and corrupting when operated by people without ethics, morals or boundaries. That means most business people today, if not always.
So we should rebuild the regulatory system destroyed by the Republicans...
One more thing, each new law passed should include a statement invalidating "Signing Statements" and indicating that such statements hold no force, are to be disregarded and cannot be attached to any official document.
It's time the legislative branch reassumed the mantle of "The People's Representatives".

I am stupefied everytime I read a post from Oak Ridge Runner. Seldom do they contain facts, and seldom do they make any sense. Someone unhook him from FoxNews....stat!
