Auditorium renovations should have passed

I am glad that the election has finally ended and we will not have to be bombarded with political phone calls and venomous commercials from both sides. My real disappointment is the votes that were cast for bond issues.

We vote to build a $12 million swim complex but turn down a vote to repair the War Memorial Auditorium that is more than 50 years old and hasn’t had any major repairs since it was built.

In addition, I as a homeowner was not happy with the vote on the 1/4-cent sales-tax increase. All that will do is add more expense to our property taxes.

This city can be as great as Raleigh and Charlotte, but we will have to make some drastic changes to accomplish that end.

Don,

Since you referenced Raleigh and Charlotte, I suggest you review the $250,000,000 parks and recreation bond that was just passed by the citiizens of Mecklenburg County, as well as the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Raleigh has put together for their parks including pools. Mecklenburg County is improving Revolution Park with new facilities and services that will support and enhance their already large aquatic facility. These two municipalities are very advanced and in tune with the needs and demands of their citizens.

It was unfortunate the auditiorium bond did not pass, but please do not sour over the projects that passed by majority support of the voters. And do take a serious look at what is being accomplished by other North Carolina cities!

Your property taxes will go up regardless Don, even though your property value likely has gone down.

This sales tax increase has been shot down twice, hopefully it will be laid to rest.

Greensboro Coliseum has been mismanaged for years. Pouring another dime of taxpayer money into that place should be a crime.

While I didn't vote for the sales tax increase, it does humor me to see it show down. It makes me think that the average voter is either really stupid or really smart.

Those who don't pay property taxes directly vote for every single bond on the ballot. However, when it comes to wanting to increase their sales tax to pay for some of those items, they balk. They either don't realize that their property taxes are going to increase or they think it's somebody else who has to pay for them.

One last thought. During this economic CRISIS, our leaders should have more sense to even think of putting debt-creating bonds out for a vote. They know our voters are dumb enough to vote for just about anything and now is not the time to be incurring more debt and raising taxes.
