The U.S. isn’t poor
Your article on income disparity made me so angry, I got up without finishing my lunch to write this letter. The graph on “gauging poverty” says “only Mexico and Turkey had poverty rates higher than the U.S.” How utterly ridiculous when the measure of poverty is not real income but those “making less than 50 percent of the population’s median income.” The average U.S. income is roughly 10 times higher than that of most of the world’s population. Also, the survey is of 30 westernized nations.
Having lived in several developing nations, I have seen real poverty, where the majority of the population struggles to get two meals a day. Yes, there is some poverty here, but very, very little compared to 90 percent of the world. Yes, our economic times are hard. I’ve taken losses like everyone else. But we are so, so blessed compared to most. Let’s keep it in perspective.

OK I admit that I didn't read the article and maybe it was stated badly but the the writer says the article was on income disparity and I suspect that the point was that there was greater income disparity in the US than these places.
Perhaps deserves a letter about the inexact wording on the graph but not to get your drawers in a knot.

Typical lamestream media shenanigans, Marcia: "America Sucks", "America is a racist nation", "America is the only industrialized nation that doesn't provide free health care for it's shillrun", blah, blah, blah.
The media has signed on to the liberal agenda and this means portraying America in the worst light possible.
Just look at the little messiah's infomercial a couple of days ago. Victim after pitiful victim paraded across in front of the cameras so Americans could see first hand just how terrible America treats it's citizens. (of course, to right this terrible wrong perpetrated against these typical Americans, all we have to do is vote for the democrats)
Little wonder the lamestream media and their parrots in the cable news outlets are suffering tough times. People who work hard to provide for their families and save for their own future are told 24/7 by the media how selfish and unpatriotic they are for resisting the notion that they owe someone who never worked for it part of their income.
Disgusting.

I fine this ongoing argument a continuation of divisiveness. The real discussion should be about how to improve the lives of American People.

Wonder if getting a job, just might help you live better? I have been coast to the mountains twice in 2 weeks. I have seen countless stores trying to get help at over $9.50 per hour. Check out the Sheetz store on Wendover, I think their sign said $9.75. Can any one tell me one place that pays minimum wage? It hard to compete with the governments sit on your ass plan!Sounds like a good story for the NR.

Where in this world has government'"improved the lives" of people? Let's see, there is much less income disparity in Cuba, North Korea, Haiti, the West Bank, Antigua, and scores of other places, and how "great" are the lives of the people there.
Cuba has free health care. Anyone of you liberal morons want to move there! If so, I'd like to help with your moving expenses.
In the twisted minds of folks like Mr. Rockefeller, it is not divissive to print blatant lies about poverty here, but it is divissive to reply to that never ending liberal practice of tearing down this country. In case you "good" folks haven't noticed, unlike many of those Utopias with smaller income discrepencies, no one is keeping you from leaving, later today if you choose. Good bleeping riddance!

"Can any one tell me one place that pays minimum wage?"
So you support the minimum wage law since it impacts no-one. Cool.

"Where in this world has government 'improved the lives' of people?"
Start with Norway and get back to us, Mr. Baloney.

"Start with Norway and get back to us, Mr. Baloney."
Beautiful country indeed, especially the fjords. The Norwegian govt. has helped it's citizens with, eeeeeevvvvviiiiiilllll BIG OIL!! My God they actually drill offshore, where is Greenpeace when you need them?
Note to JDR, Norway is expensive. I went there in '06. As an easy example, my required daily bottle of Diet Coke (20 oz.) set me back $5.50. You can get the same or a buck 39 here.
As for poor, go to Africa. I saw people living in huts comprised of sticks, mud and cow dung. Even had the pleasure of entering one!! They come complete with bedding, fire hole in the middle for cooking, and of course a place to keep the cows so the lions and other predators won't kill them at night.
The higher end houses are comprised of cinder blocks, most without electricity, few with running water. And you thought West Virginia had it bad.

America, home of the world's only fat poor people having two cars, 175 cable channels, big screen plasma HDTVs, unlimited soft drinks, fast food on demand, pizzas at the door, free education for at least twelve years, and so many clothes that they give them away.

We should use the Norwegian model, I am all for it. 40%++ of revenue to the State, no subsidies, heavy production taxes and environmental laws that would terrify the Sierra Club. Let's make it happen! Let em pay for their own oil rigs, production costs, labor and cleanup.

I hear Conservatives tear it down far more often. They are usually bashing one group of Americans or another, running up huge deficits, undermining our military and financial systems and nationalizing banks.
If I were Republican right now I would just hide in the corner and keep my mouth shut until I cleaned up my own house. Most animals don't crap where they eat.

Mr Rockefeller, I'll even help you relocate to Norway, if you prefer that to Cuba, or N. Korea.
Fortunately, Norway is so insignificant that no one, except their Muslim immigrants, wants to attack them so they have no military of any consequence, to fund. I think you'll like it there! Please, take all of your like minded friends with you. I'll do my best to find sponsors for all of you.

I love your first paragraph verelse. What is considered poor here versus many other countries is entirely different.
As for Norway, I've oft seen folks comparing the Scandinavian countries and their policies, suggesting we mimic them. Keep in mind that there are 2.2 million more inhabitants in NC than in Norway.
What about the cost of goods in Norway? Care for a $5.50 Diet Coke?
Posted on November 3, 2008 1:26 PM
Verlese, if you hear conservatives tearing down this country either your hearing needs to be checked, or your mind needs to be checked!
"Bashing one group of Americans...! The only ones we bash are liberals, and calling them Americans is questionable! Being a citizen does not make you an American!
"Undermining" our military? What planet do you live on. I spent 9 years in the military! It's you liberal lunaticsa whio continually call our troops murderers. Compare them to Soviet Union Gulag guards. Talk about them
terrorizing women and children in the middle of the night in Iraq. Those were all statements by by liberal Demo-Rat members of congress. Given the space I could produce many similar outrageous remarks. "The war is lost, we can't win!" Harry Reid, senate majority leader. "The surge failed!" Barry Obama, Socialist, U.S. senator. "If you don't study, you'll end up in Iraq!" John Kerry, Demo-Rat senator who "voted for funding the troops before he voted against it!"
I'm sure you can provide some similar statements by prominent conservatives. Oh, you did get one thing right, they did run up unconscionable deficitswhich will look like piggy bank stuff by the time Obama is finished!

TonyMo,
I predict a long bout of PMS for you starting soon.
More on this tomorrow..................................

"The only ones we bash are liberals, and calling them Americans is questionable! " You prove my point. You can't hate the people and love the country; they are the same thing. While I disagree with some conservative ideology, at least of recent vintage and particularly the hate-filled rhetoric espoused by those who call anyone that does not agree with them "un-American", I do not hate my fellow countrymen. One cannot hate them and be a citizen.
And tonymo, I am certainly not a "librul", though by your definition anyone who does not agree with you must be. I also served in the military, as did my father, grandfathers (both), great-grandfathers (3 of 4) and every single gg-grandfather. My son returned from the surge in April (third tour). I'll wager you'll find at least as many Democrats in the military as Republicans. We are drawn from the working classes after all.
Republicans do not have a monopoly on patriotism. In fact, I would call undermining the middle class, tax credits for shipping jobs overseas, transfer of military technology to China and discrediting our financial institutions downright un-American, but that is the legacy of the current Republican party.
I have never heard a "librul" call our troops "murderers". I have heard Republicans tell lies to start wars and get troops killed needlessly, however. "Talk about them
terrorizing women and children in the middle of the night in Iraq." Funny, my son was on the 82nd Airborned, 2d Brigade Combat team and he said he hated terrifying women and kids in the middle of the night. He said they would kick in a door and set up a sniper station on the roof. Anyone in the house could not leave for obvious reasons. I understand it had to be done but don't pretend like it was fun for everyone.
And remember the entire was was started on fabricated evidence and outright lies so George Bush could get revenge on Saddam Hussein.
I agree with your portayal of Reid and Pelosi, but then again, I am not a Democrat, just an American.
Republicans need to get over themselves. They're starting to claim they created the country while busy trying to destroy what it stands for, undermine its citizens in the middle class, debase the Constitution and separation of powers and establish an aristocratic bureaucracy.
It's not for you to decide who is American and who is not.

Dan,
It's true. I am sick of people who are supposedly poor working half the hours I do, watching a 52-inch plasma flat screen and ordering out. I have to work like a dog to keep my business running, pay for college (son is undergrad, wife is back in grad school and I am taking some grad courses at NCSU) along with starting another business. There ARE poor in America, just not very many and most of us have a fabulous life that others could only dream of.
The good thing about us Americans is we are never satisfied and we believe if we work hard we can make the country even better.
I think we should make more loans available through SBA along with restoring vocational education and teaching kids that they can change their own lives. That is why I am not a Democrat, either.
Right now we have to get our financial house in order and there are too many in Congress beholden to the crooks that got us here. I intend to help get rid of all of them one by one.
"Care for a $5.50 Diet Coke?" Nope. I already live in the best country, though I would love to visit Norway.

Marcia....
Nothing, I mean NOTHING should upset you so much that you read in the 'News and Fishwrap' that would make you NOT finish your lunch!

"I have to work like a dog to keep my business running, pay for college..."
I can understand verelse, although luckily I only have to worry about a one person business, but it requires constant attention. That's ok, I'd rather put in the extra hours than work for someone else.
Not sure of your income level but the Obama tax hikes worry me. The $250K level seems to be dropping. Frankly it will have to drop, there is no way taxing the top 2% even more will pay for much. Are you prepared to have more of your money, money that you work like a dog for, confiscated by govt.?
This may sound callous but here 'tis. I agree there are poor people in this country, but the definition of poverty in this country is NOTHING compared to many countries of the world as you pointed out. Most poor people here have much more resources than 'middle class' folks in the 3rd world.
Good luck in your quest to rid govt. of crooks. I'm too cynical at this point.
Go to Norway and surrounding countries. I had a good friend from Denmark and got to spend quite a bit of time there. The people are wonderful, the women beautiful, and their economic systems seem to work well given their small populations. However it is expensive!!
All the best to your son.

"The $250K level seems to be dropping."
Where are you finding this drop?

Ask Joe Biden:

Face it rahrah, you can't raise taxes on only 2% of income earners and pay for all the promised programs.
Even Obama realizes this:

Just wait though. President Obama, if he wins, will await the havoc of special interests looking for the bacon.
