There’s precedence for invoking God

The following is a Counterpoint:

By Mary Ann Underwood

Two wonders of late:

1. News of the economy is grim. Yet, nothing is mentioned in the media about how legalized gambling, a way to get rich quick, is helping or hurting matters. There’s a proverb that says that he that hastes to become rich considers not that poverty will come upon him.

2. Kathleen Parker, known as a conservative columnist, seemed to have departed from her usual tone in the Nov. 19 edition of the News & Record.

Her column, “Religious right is dragging down Republican Party,” makes her appear like Jekyll and Hyde. It’s like fair-weather friends who cheered Jesus on one minute and then cried “Crucify Him!”

Incidentally, it’s not WWJD, but what did Jesus, who was good and kind, do (WDJD) to receive such bitter, vitriolic hatred?

In her article, Parker said that “armband religion is killing the Republican Party.” She’s unhappy that Sarah Palin, whose ticket received more than 58 million votes, mentions God.

Never mind that Abraham Lincoln, a hero of Barack Obama, concluded his second inaugural address with “The Almighty has His purposes.”

Her preference for those who prefer a more private approach to worship is not seen in Scripture. One of many examples is the prophet Jeremiah. His prophesy on Israel’s latter-day restoration shows the ambassadorship of believers. He says, “And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord ...”

Parker ended her column on a dim note. Not to worry. It’s not over.

The writer lives in Asheboro.

"Incidentally, it’s not WWJD, but what did Jesus ... do"

I think both WWJD and WDJD are silly. What Jesus "did" was miracles: turn a few fish into a feast, raise the dead, walk on water. etc.

Easy to gain a following doing stuff like that .. and from my limited knowledge, miracles were pretty common place in these early days when there were no mirrors (looking glasses) or magnets (beyond the rare natural kind) ... not even toilet paper to wipe one's self ... making it a miracle to not have butt rash.

mary ann: don't worry. if jesus ever showed up again, the same 50+ million religionists and saducees who voted for palin would nail his peacemongering, liberal, cheek-turning carcass to a laminated beam with hitatchi nail guns, right after the torturecrats in the party were through with him. His message of reconciliation would not go over big in the Obamanation in the Bush world, unless he added a pre-emptive nuking, plunder, looting, coercion and occupation with a boot on your throat clause to the sermon on the mount. Snap out of it...and JD..yes jesus broke bread with the same hand he wiped and scratched his rash with. I love your theology.

Although we may differ in our religious beliefs, James, I can appreciate your sense of humor. Thanks for the laugh.

Chucka,

Unfortunately, I believe you are right about religious zealots crucifying Christ should he show up in human form today. I would never have been able to come up with the unique way you described the event but I could see it happening.

I can appreciate Parker's take on what I consider extremists. The only issue with I had with her column was her shying away from the term "religious right". While the title of her article contained the term, she used "..the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP.." and "Armband" religion to describe the real culprits.

In my mind, religious right and Christianity are not one and the same. To me Christianity is based on the love of Christ and the goodness of humanity. The religious right sect takes their message of hate and condemnation into the streets, onto the air waves and anywhere else they can get press.

Therefore, it is my opinion, religion per se did not alienate people. The hatred of the religious right did.

and to keep things fair and balanced, so does the extreme left...

there was and still is only one who was good...the rest of humanity falls terribly short of His witness...

Abraham Lincoln, for most of his life, was an Atheist. He even wrote a book on why religion was evil (which a friend told him to destroy because it would harm his political chances). During his last few years, he became a Deist to all accounts, but that is still nothing near the modern evangelical concept of god.

Abraham Lincoln was such an atheist for most of his life that he wrote a book against the evils and fallacies of religion. The only reason it isn't published today is because a friend of his told him it would harm his political career, so Lincoln destroyed it. Later in life, he became a deist at most, no where near the modern evangelical crap that you see everywhere.

Like the Asian lady said Yvonne, a little balance. There are extremists on the secular progressive left as well. Witness that Christmas....errrr.....Holiday Trees are officially banned in the UNC-CH Davis & Wilson libraries this year. Apparently someone got offended.

Guess we need to ban Holiday Trees from the White House, after all we need separation of church and state in the secular progressive definition.

************************************************

Slaan: I take it you thought your first post didn't take so you rewrote it? The first one references "the modern evangelical concept of god." The second "the modern evangelical crap that you see everywhere."

Interesting change of wording in just two minutes.

rbennet [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Good point, Slaan. Perhaps one of the things Obama admires about Lincoln was his ability to use religion and situations as leverage points that don't require any actual belief.

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave..."

Hey, didn't Lincoln suspend habeas corpus (thereby allowing unlawful detention) as well?

"Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has his own purposes. 'Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!'"

(This is for rahrah ONLY! as it has NOTHING to do with above post!) haha

How do you re-heat yours?
I don't like them warmed in the microwave as they get kinda rubbery.
I generally just eat them cold from the fridge, however they are kinda hard that way.
I have had a couple people tell me that they don't refrigerate them at all, but that doesn't sound safe to me (I mean it IS sausage!)

Please answer! Thanks, Beth

Dan,

Although I was referring to the Westboro/Fred Phelps type of religious extremism (God hate fags, blacks, Jews and fag enablers), I suppose the KKK and skin heads could fall under that category as well. I simply never thought of them as leftists.

Without a doubt, extremism is usually a negative no matter what issue or topic you are referencing. However, the religious left is usually not as affluent and politically powerful as the religious right (or if they are, they keep a mighty low profile). I think they are no less dangerous in their behaviors, which is why you do not see me defending them either.

The ltte referenced Parker's column which dealt with the RR. Therefore my response was in reference to the RR. I do not feel it is my responsibility to cover all the bases when offering an opinion. If that is your style (which I know it is not.), knock yourself out. :-)

BTW, is everyone having trouble with TypePad? In order to post a comment I have to hold my head at at 43 degree angle to the left, lift my right foot off the floor, shift my tongue to the center, twitch my nose and catch the refresh/reload cycle on the 8 1/2th turn. If I vary in the sequence, I get the comment rejection screen that tells me I need to sign in (over and over). One night I signed in ten times within five minutes. I'm really beginning to develop a complex over all the rejections. I think TypePad hates me.

Ellen [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

ooops... I just 'blew' my cover didn't I? Oh well! I thought that THAT was what middle names were for!

Slaan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"Interesting change of wording in just two minutes. "

The second is more truthful to me, but I tried to be nice in the first one. Blame typepad for making me angry!

Hmm... interesting. I have to twirl my chair around, stick out my tounge then sing "singing in the rain," while knocking EXACTLY 5 1/2 times on my desk (don't ask about the other half...), and popping my neck-joint. It is... uncomfortable.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Yvonne, we agree that Phelps, KKK, skin heads, etc. are all sicko right wing extremists. My mention was of secular extremists, many of whom want God out of the public square. Equating a Chris.....errrr....Holiday Tree in a library to a religious symbol is a bit off the cliff to me.

Slaan, try to be nice, Santa is watching.....opppps....there I go with Chris.....ooooppps.....Winter Break symbolism again.

We all agree that Typepad SUCKS!! I even sent them an email to that effect. I just put on some ruby slippers, close my eyes, click the slippers together at the heels and chant "There's no place like home" 25 times and it seems to work fine.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Slaan,

Sorry about your neck but.....at least TypePad is not discriminating against me. Some how it helps to know that. Thanks!

Is this what they call progress? Just when they finally worked out the kinks of TypeKey, they have to muck it up. A little simplicity would work for me.

Oh, Dan, say it's not so! TypePad is not being nice to you either? I guess it has reached epidemic proportions. Would it help to vote on it, forcing them to give us TypeKey back?

Sorry folks, but if I didn't laugh about it, I would cuss and do harm to my computer. I try hard not to say uglies and even harder not to damage expensive equipment

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I'd say definitely keep them refrigerated if you're going to take more than a day to eat them. I usually just put mine in the microwave, 26 seconds for 3 and they don't seem rubbery. About the only other way might be to find the perfect reheating time in the oven or maybe under the broiler, but I'm happy with the microwave.

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I believe TypePad merged with or acquired TypeKey, causing all of our problems.

I find that generally, as long as I'm not thinking about it rejecting me, it doesn't reject me. When I anticipate rejection it usually happens.

Of course, since this entire post was about it rejecting me, it almost certainly will.

Ellen [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

rahrah....

26 secs for 3? Three? 3?...
I usually eat between 6-10 in one sitting!
How big are yours?
I have heard that some people make them in those 'mini-muffin' pans and therefore they are larger. I prefer to roll them by hand and they come out a little smaller than golf balls.
I am thinking of NOT baking the whole batch and just baking the amount that I want at any given time.
I also like mine rather on the spicy side as in adding a 'heaping' tsp. of cayenne pepper rather than the 1/4 tsp. that the recipe calls for. How about you?

Ellen [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Oh, and typepad (or typekey) is messed up for sure!
I hate when this site says that you are 'logged in' and then you type a considerably long comment only to get 'You must be logged on to comment'!! I mean....DUH!! I WAS logged in BEFORE I began commenting!

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"How big are yours?"

Yeah rahrah, tell us how big your balls are? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Must be fairly large if he can only handle three at a time but Ellen can handle 6-10 of hers.

OK, rahrah, I have signed in four times to make the one comment above. It keeps telling me I have to be signed in to comment. I DID think positively. I kept repeating "It's gonna take it, it's gonna take it, it's gonna take it" but it kept rejecting me. Is there some special ritual before or after the "positive" thinking?

Six.

Ellen [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

People.... Get your mind outta the gutter!

Me and rahrah know what we're talking about!

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

As long as we're talking about sausage balls, mine are probably about the same size as yours, Ellen. A pound of sausage yields between 40 and 50 balls.

I only eat three because I like to think I have willpower. Balls of meat and cheese aren't exactly the healthiest thing to be eating, so I keep them in the light snack category.

I just snack between 3 and a 11 times a day.

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Yvonne,

The trick isn't so much 'positive thinking' as it is NO THINKING. You've got to trust the system to work so much that the possibility that it won't doesn't enter your mind. No preparing for it, no anything. Just put your faith in the 'Post' button.

Of course my browser [usually] saves my post in the entry box, so if I just hit the back arrow it's sitting there waiting on me which makes it easier to have confidence in the system.

Plus, you know, I'm just a downright cute and likeable fellow, whether you be a grandmother, a toddler, a [former or current] babe, or an unwieldy comment submission program.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"Me and rahrah know what we're talking about! "

Yeah, his balls. A pound will only get you 40 or 50? Sounds like small balls to me.

Me and rahrah?

BTW, this is weird, When I try to post on my (home) office computer Typepad repeatedly sucks.

When using my laptop it works fine every time. Using Firefox on both.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I had to switch to Firefox when the N&R went to TypeKey because IE would not let me sign on any more. Over three weeks and almost daily communication with technical support did not resolve the problem. Switching to Mozilla did the trick. Perhaps I should switch back to IE.

Don't think for a minute the commissars are going to give up their government-funded wealth for your silly causes:

(quote)
Half of all vehicles leased by members of Congress with taxpayer funds are gas-guzzling SUVs, a review of congressional financial records show.

Twice as many lawmakers drive luxurious Lincoln Town Cars – four, at a sluggish 15 miles per gallon in the city – than hybrid Toyota Priuses – two, at 48 miles per gallon in the city.

Charles B. Rangel declares, "There's no way in the world" he will give up his Cadillac DeVille for a new lease.

And Porsche Boxsters are eligible for congressional leases. Nice.

Remember, Obama only jumped out of his nearly-new Canadian-built V8 Hemi 300C (only 20k miles on the odometer) and into a hybrid for his presidential campaign.

I guess since Chrysler might go the same way as the Titanic, straight down, well that explains zero bids for the car. Times are tough. I thought George Soros might want the car, pocket change after all.
