Despite what some say, Bush does indeed read

It was certainly interesting to read Ross Howell’s letter in the Sunday, Jan. 11, News & Record, in which he stated that President Bush “does not read.”

This is a statement that calls the question as to where he got this information. Mr. Howell’s letter comes hard on the heels of a recent article in The Wall Street Journal by Karl Rove discussing how much President Bush does read and naming the far-reaching subjects of a few of his recent selections.

President Bush’s choices were certainly not ones I would pick up when wanting light reading. The books were heavy on history and nonfiction. There was no “fluff” among them.

The cry during the Bush presidency was how stupid he is. Yet he graduated from Yale University with a “C” average in the days before grade inflation and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University’s School of Business. How many of those casting stones about President Bush being stupid can say the same?

I wonder what books are on Mr. Howell’s bedside table.

We all know President Bush reads. He reads children's books, upside down. To each his own....

"heels of a recent article in The Wall Street Journal by Karl Rove discussing..."

Is Karl Rove really a guy we can trust when it comes to telling us about the real George W. Bush?

Ms. Picklesimer, liberals equate not drinking the swill of left wing authors with lack of intelligence. (You must read 'differing viewpoints' by bitter liberal authors who have axes to grind with conservatives in order to be brought fully into the light) They are prone to posting links to Amazon.com in order to prove their points. (apparently they think Amazon.com lends credence to the liberal swill)

... in the "held because it may contain secret code to plotting terrorist" video Osama released on the eve of the 2004 election .. bin Laden says:

"[Bush] reckoned that it was more important to preoccupy himself with the talk of the little girl about her goat ... than with the planes and their strike on the skyscrapers, giving us three times the time required to carry out the operations, thanks be to God."

Glad to see Osama bin Laden is a proponent of reading.

I am always amazed at what charges folks up enough to write a ltte. Bottom line, if Bush had read "War and Peace" six hundred times, it still did not help him make intelligent, informed decisions.

History and nonfiction are the best reads. Reality is much more interesting than fiction, unless the fiction comes from an incredible writer.

My recent recommendations:

We were Soldiers Once, and Young
Marley and Me

Since school is out (wimpy Guilford County Schools) why not take a kid to the library today? Somebody needs to educate them.

Carol Dunn [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Again...black ice...one death of a child on the road is not worth keeping schools open. In the past, we have lost students when not enough caution was take. Better to be "wimpy" and err on the side of safety.

Good...no, excellent point, Carol.

Carol,

Can you share with us a recipe for one of your awesome casseroles?

Thanks.

We can't make life 100% safe. I could be hit by a drunk on my way to the grocery store, or somebody could pass a stopped school bus on a perfectly clear day and kill a child.

If a few roads are icy, wait till the sun comes up to open school. But this business of shutting down the entire system all day if there is a slick road anywhere in the county is overkill, IMO. Parents could always use their own good judgment regarding allowing their children to drive or driving them themselves or walking them to the bus stop or keeping them home.

Got to go drive my kids to school now.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

mamaB,

You have given the impression you home school your children. So I gather, by your comment, they are "home-schooled" by someone else.

If you choose to drive your children to school, that is your choice to make. But the school system is responsible for making decisions for ALL public school children. That makes their decision a lot harder than your decision regarding your own children. Besides, not all children who attend public school have parents who can "drive" them.

mamaboilermaker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I homeschool and/or private school, based on each child's individual needs each year. This year I am doing both--for different children.

The children who attend public schools still have individual parents/guardians who are ultimately responsible for their children. What is wrong with having school open for those who can safely get there? Those who can't will simply miss a day of school and make up the work, like they would if they were ill. I'm not expecting people to walk miles through the snow (like I did: )) but I don't see what's wrong with trusting parents to use some discretion.

BTW, neighborhood schools would make it easier for all parents to get their children to school safely, without long, dangerous commutes.

I apologize to society for being rich enough to drive my children around in my well-worn, internal combustion vehicle. Sorry I can't but one for everybody else.

Death Corn (from the Sweet Potato Queen's Book)

1 box Zataran's yellow rice, cooked without oil
1 can Mexicorn
1 can Cream of chicken soup
1 stick melted butter
1 cup shredded cheese

Mix and place in casserole dish. Top with more cheese. Bake at 350 until bubbly.

Carol, I am checking my pantry for ingredients--that sounds incredible! Cheddar, jack, mexican blend, what kind of cheese?

Obviously you are not a school teacher...This would cause several problems. We do have an attendance policy for one. If schools are closed for a day, that full day is made up; there are provisions in the school calendar for this.

I fear many who rail about school closings are just upset because their baby sitter is unavailable for the day. I understand the problem; but as you say, this is the parent's problem.

Also, Bush's term is over. Why dwell on his failings and attributes any longer...same with Clinton, Carter, et al.

Carol,

That was really kewl of you to post that recipe. Having eaten @ Yvonne's, I pretty much already knew how to slap bologna on Sunbeam... (but her Coke's were extra fizzy).

MG,

What you ate while at the cottage is what you brought. My provisions were a step up, straight from Mickey D's or Subway.

Carol Dunn [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

So, MG, you know Yvonne...interesting...do I know you? Wondering why you asked about a casserole recipe from me...my grandson and husband are "allergic" to casseroles, so I don't make them often. This one I sent is a keeper.

I'm incredulous you've forgotten me Carol. I was the smitten bouncer that walked you out to your car to protect you from your lap dance clientele.

MG,

I think that last comment was out of line and uncalled for. Carol seems to be a nice person.

Yvonne, in the "notorious/lipstick/pig" LTTE blog where you and I were discussing gospel music, just curious but to whom were you referring with the "JSD" designation?

Whoever "JSD" is, it is not me.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Nothing worse than a fanatic,

My apology, please. I zone sometimes, think I am in a different thread, responding to a different person.

So my thanks go to you instead. What I heard was alluring. I will be purchasing the CD. I am calling Barnes & Nobles tomorrow to see if they have it in any of their stores rather than ordering it online. I am not sure my computer has not been hacked into so I do not trust ordering it off the internet. If they don't, I'll make the trip to their store to order it.

I have learned a great deal today from the blogs.

Back on topic, I'm just glad Mr. Bush has plenty of time for reading now!
