Regarding the story, “Money crunch forces N.C. to delay release of tax refund checks” (March 6):
Isn’t that nice? Raleigh is pretty unforgiving when you are late with your taxes or had taxes under-withheld. Penalties and interest are due for sure. I will be adjusting my W2 to make sure neither state nor federal owes me any money.
Sadly, you cannot trust your government anymore to keep its household in order.

Double standard for the shepherds and the sheep. Problem is there are too many sheep and most don't care as long as long as the shepherds feed them.

I've never understood why people give the government an interest-free loan every year instead of adjusting their W-2 forms to avoid getting a refund at all. The state charges interest and penalties on late tax payments, but we can't charge them interest on the money we let them use over the past year. Frankly, it's better to pay a little on 4/15 than to receive a big refund. A tax refund is a terrible form of savings account.

The Fair Tax would eliminate this problem. (See http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer, along with the two Boortz/Linder books).

Sorry about the triple posts - problems with the server...

For those that want the Fair Tax, I suggest they first read Wealth and Democracy by Kevin Phillips (or one of his other books 'cause he's kind of a one trick pony).

It does not address the Fair Tax specifically, but in part it does discuss how those with large bank accounts have a significant advantage and since day one, they have maintained their edge by simply bullying over the rest of us.

As a quick example: you may have person that help manage your 401K or other stock purchases. Do you really think you have the best (smartest / most savy and schrewd and connected and ... ) person? The really good ones are working for those with the real cash.

Add to that political influence. Another quick example: It use to be Federal Senators were not direcly elected, they were be sent by State Legislators. State Legislators were effectively placed by business men (who used local incluence to get 'em to the state capital) where the State Legislators could then do the bidding of business men. This is one reason why militias were often sent to beat to a pulp those who dared to challange business operations by even threatening a union or strike.

I can go on, but maybe you get the point.

BOTTOM LINE: I do not know much about the Fair Tax, or the Flat Tax on any of that crap - but I not know I do not trust the bastards that would write them into law,

Fair Tax--so easy a Democrat can do it.

Illiterati, couldn't agree more with you, I prefer to pay on 4/15. One time I asked a former co-worker around 4/15 if he owed taxes. Reply "I didn't have to pay taxes, I'm getting a refund". Pitiful.

I headed to the accountant shortly - my first 5 digit check for 2008 Business Taxes goes out Monday, my second 5 digit check for 2008 Personal Taxes goes out next month, and my 4 digit check for 2008 State Taxes goes out in May.

Thanks for your small down payment on the debt your grandchildren and great grandchildren will incur JDR.

JDR,
For those who bash the Fair Tax as "crap", I suggest you first become informed about it before making negative remarks. It makes so much more sense than our current system. It is much different than a "flat tax". It would solve many of our nation's current problems. It's the real "stimulus" that we need, the real "change" that we need.
