Hagan harms the state by raising cigarette tax

To Kay Hagan:

You have let the people of North Carolina down by voting for an increase of 61 cents per pack on cigarettes. If not for tobacco, North Carolina would not be half what it is today. Tobacco has helped people on farms more than any other crop. Also, the supply and equipment dealers would not have been kept in business if not for tobacco. It also helped farmers grow other crops that people need that did not make as much money. Tobacco has helped build hospitals and research buildings in North Carolina.

The paper says that the tax will cost 3,000 jobs and up to $36 million in revenue shortfalls for North Carolina. Also, 65,000 people in North Carolina have jobs connected to the tobacco industry.

We don’t need anyone in Washington who will hurt North Carolina that much. Yes, you are way out of line for voting for tobacco taxes. If you don’t know North Carolina better than that, it is time for you to come back home. We need someone who will represent North Carolina. A lot of people I know feel the same way.

The funny thing about people who smoke is that they tend to buy the product regardless of price.

Yvonne [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Exactly, rahrah. Cigarettes or cigars are not necessities. Food and gas are. Logically speaking, where should the taxes be levied? On things that are necessary for human survival or on a produce that a small percentage will derive benefit from?

Hell 3000 jobs are not important! Only if you are the one losing it.
The important thing about this CHIPS bill it covers ILLEGALS *children. However if you are a working stiff, making a few dollars and are a American, sorry you must pay your own way.
Want to jump on the Mark Binker?
I asked Mr. Binker, if this bill included illegals children, he tried to smoke me. (no pun intended)
Per Brad Millers office.
Per Richard Burr office.
Do not know about Hagan office, they lied and did not call me back.

I had thought Kay Hagan would be a strong supporter for North Carolina. I was wrong. She has no agenda for North Carolina. She is merely following the direction of OBAMA, the idiot who was sworn in as president. Kay Hagan, in record time, has become a Washingonite. Elizabeth Dole didnt do anything for NC, but she didnt hurt us either.

I am very disapointed in Kay Hagan. She will serve only one term and will then be replaced but how much more damage can she do to the people of our state?

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

That's what I liked about Dole. She did nothing. The politician who earns the 'ineffective' and 'ranks 96th out of 100' tag from the leftist lamestream media is worth keeping on the job.

Hagan is just another one of Harry's stooges casting her vote when and where he tells her. No disappointment, there. It was expected.

Big Jake [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Who cares about 3000 jobs? $36mm in lost revenue? She cares but she is programmed how to vote by the likes of Chuckie Schumer, Ted Kennedy, and Harry Reid.

She is going to do nothing but vote to raise taxes and increase defecits.

She also will hurt many business owners with her vote on this pro-union bill:

As a long-time and proud North Carolinian I am ashamed of North Carolina's long historical involvement with tobacco. Those who place financial considerations above public health and personal safety are unethical, immoral, and criminal. Tobacco users are nothing more than foul smelling druggies with bad breath who lack common sense, will power, and personal discipline and there is little difference between American tobacco farmers and Latin American growers of the plant (coca) from which cocain is derived - both groups cater to human weaknesses and make significant contributions to ill health and early deaths. Cigarette sellers and marketers are actually nothing more than drug pushers. Every time I see someone tied to one of those personal portable oxygen tanks with the little plastic tubes running up their nose I approach them ever so quietly and politely and ask them if they have a cigarette I can bum.

ncpatriot [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Monica,
All people who are on portable oxygen are not cigarette smokers. If I had an oxygen tank and you came up to me with your silly assed remark, I would punch your damn lights out.

I dont give a damn about taxing cigarettes, but why dont they tax the liquor and beer equally. Monica, you gripe my ass with your better than thou attitude. Get a frigging life.

W J Ellis [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

".. nothing more than foul smelling druggies with bad breath who lack common sense,"

For a second there I thought you were talking about women who get vanity abortions.

Obviously not- they destroy many more lives.

Beware Monica- whatever your vice is can be taxed into the black market as well.

Oh, and while you are walking on water and healing the lame, perhaps you could shed more of your inspirational insight on the rest of us poor imbeciles.

(are you related to noname?)

firerescuechick [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Amen, WJ.

Monica, it must be awfully high up on that horse you ride. It a wonder you can see any of us little people way down here. Don't get a nosebleed.

As for the tax, I smoke and a 61 cent increase isn't that much. I don't mind as long as they increase the tax on smokeless tobacco a similar amount. It is unfair to tax the people that smoke, but not the people that chew or dip.

ghost from white oak [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Monica, I guess we can put you down as a non smoker?

Please, be careful up on your soapbox, we wouldn't want you to fall.

Molene Gunch [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Tobacco has to be grown somewhere, so why not here? It's not illegal to smoke.

Our red clay is perfect for tobacco, as it is for carpet cleaning companies.

All the money it would take to solve our problems does exist, but the government can only get more of it by coming up with new ways to steal it. And they're very good at it.

As for churches, I'd be worried. WAAAY too much money for the stealers to ignore. Somehow, some way, some day, the feds will have their guy waiting at the altar to get their cut. For some reason, I picture that guy and his armed guards leaving during the sermon.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"The funny thing about people who smoke is that they tend to buy the product regardless of price."

That from a guy who drinks cheap beer at $13/case.

**********************************************

Sin taxes to pay for health care for the children, what benevolence. If it's govt. seizing taxpayer money "for the children" then it must be good right?

Anyone remember the large tobacco settlement that was supposed to pay for smoking cessation and treating sick smokers?

"In the 10 years since the landmark deal, the states have received $79.2 billion of the settlement and another $124.3 billion from tobacco taxes, but have spent only about 3 percent of it -- $6.5 billion -- on tobacco prevention and cessation programs, the groups said in a report."

http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE4AH1AS20081118

3 percent. This reveals the dirty truth is the states don't want people to stop smoking. When they get $12.43 billion a year from tobacco taxes why would they? This would dry up a significant revenue source for their pork projects.

Now honestly, who expects the states to put ALL of this new money towards health care for the children? Any some of you people actually trust the govt. to run the health care system?

***********************************************
As a former smoker (9 years clean now) I know both sides. Monica is correct (although a bit holier than thou) that smoking is nasty and addictive, I knew that when I smoked. I personally know that it is hard to quit and some people frankly don't want to, they enjoy smoking.

***********************************************

As Neo said, don't expect Kay Hagan to vote differently from how King Harry tells her to vote.

Ms. Better that thou Monica said
"I am ashamed of North Carolina's long historical involvement with tobacco"

The tobacco money in this state has built more universities, hospitals, and sports arenas, churches and schools than any other industry in this state. Tobacco money has employed more people, provided more homes, jobs and decent living wages than any other industry in the state. If you are ashamed of the heritage of this state I invite you, while you are on you high horse, to take that horse and ride it right out of North Carolina.
YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE!
Before you leave, be sure to give ALL your belongings to the tobacco industry. Because most likely the tobacco industry in this state paid for most of them.
You should be ashamed of condemning an industry, which has provided you with so many benefits.

rahrah [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"That from a guy who drinks cheap beer at $13/case. "

I don't see how that's relevant, nor did I ever say that I drank the cheap beer. I'm much more into craft beers--barleywines, milk stouts, ambers, belgian whites, an oatmeal porter....mmmm. They don't sell these beers at 13 bucks a case. They really don't even sell them in cases.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Ahhh, c'mon rahrah, you lauded the weekly 13 simoleons that Obama will put into the working person's pocket in the form of a case of beer.

It is relevant to smoking as beer drinkers will too continue to buy the product regardless of price.

I can go with you on the ambers and whites, but stouts are.....well.....stout.

The Mrs. and I used to homebrew but we've not had the time since becoming parents. Hope to get back to it some time soon.

Just wait, the Feds and/or states will ratchet up taxes on beer, wine and booze soon, of course to benefit "the children". I'll likely go back to homebrewing at that time.

My son and I are watching NCSU/MD at the moment, the Pack is down 25-18. We're pulling for them!!

What a charming bunch of people you turned out to be, especially for a Sunday. Even if Monica stepped on your toes, she does have the right to her opinion.

You (collectively) are right there behind her as long as she expressed disapproval of the same as you, but turn on her when she expresses something with which you disagree. There's a name for that behavior...um...uh...oh, yea, hypocrite.

Twilla [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Monica, while you have the right to express yourself, we have the right to disagree.

It must be lonely being you. However I don't feel sorry for ya.

If I ever see you walk up to someone on oxygen and ask them that question, hopefully you will have your wings on. You will need them to escape. Oh, and the halo would be a nice touch too. *griN*
*mutters* Devil woman*, that's what she presents as.

Fibber Kay. That is all.

Monica, don't pay any attention to these blow hards on here they try their best to run anybody off of here that doesn't agree with their warped thinking. The "noname" that they are referring to, and several others were run off of here because of their bashing and criticisms.
You do have your right to your opinion, and I agree with you. Smoking stinks and is a health hazard to everyone who must inhale second hand smoke.. and you are correct, smokers destroy more than they create. How many forests, homes, businesses, etc have been destroyed by a careless smoker? Alot more than smokers would like to admit.
But like I said, don't let these jerks get to you , they will try their best to do so, but if you don't engage in tatamount with them they won't have anybody to fuss with. Most of them are just full of hot air and hateful to anyone who doesn't agree with them. If they get too out of hand with hateful remarks to you call Allen Johnson at the N&R he oversees these blogs and can ban people from being on here if they get enough complaints about them.
I don't care who you are no one has the right to be mean spirited and hateful just because you don't agree with another person's opinion, but that just goes to show you, like Yvonne said they are a bunch of hypocrites.

I think they (tobbacco farmers) should all change over to either cotton or corn, both are grown well here and and needed more than tobbacco. Tobbacco is a blight on this world and should be eliminated totally and made illegal. It is a large part of the reason that health insurance, and medical costs are so outrageous.
Altho those of us who have the good sense not to smoke can have some solice in the fact that the smokers will kill themselves early in life and we will be rid of them, unfortunately unsuspecting victims will go too, like their kids and spouses but they don't care as long as they can light up. But of course there is always some other dumb ass out there who starts so I guess it is a vicious cycle of *cough...cough...cough* smoking and polluting the air for others. I knew a man who smoked up until the day before he died of lung cancer from smoking. He would even smoke with the oxygen in his nose.

So far on here there is only one among you that I would consider a good christian and that is Yvonne.
The rest of you could care less if a homeless man died in front of your eyes, you would probably just step over him to get to your lunch date. Can't miss that, it means more money for you.

You may want to check the archives before posting about being mean spirited and hateful itsallgood. You just stepped in it, suggest leaving your shoes outdoors tonight.

"Tobacco is a blight on this world and should be eliminated totally and made illegal."

Let me substitute one word just to make an example:

Abortion is a blight on this world and should be eliminated totally and made illegal.

Now for the reason I did this. Pro-choicers oft use the argument that if abortion is made illegal then there will be a black market for abortions, "back alley" abortions is a common term. Agreed that there will be some.

If tobacco is outlawed the exact same thing will happen, there will be a black market for it. If you don't believe it, just look at the market for illegal drugs.

Don't hold your breath daytrader, tobacco will never be outlawed. As I pointed out earlier, the govt. is just as addicted to tobacco taxes as smokers are to nicotine.

Oh, yeah, Monica I forgot to warn you about Dan he will really try to engage you in a confrontation so just ignore him as he is one of the biggest blow hards on here. Dan has a tendency to take things very personal and thinks that all derogatory comments are directed toward him, I suspect he has mental issues.
Also be aware that several on here have more than one identity and will try to badger you with several different ones commenting like on this blog here, it's probably all the same person. This site is a joke and really not worth the time it takes to read and compose, but I find it entertaining.

I just want to point out that all of yall calling people against Monica hypocrites are hypocrites yourself. You say that everyone is entitled to their opinion and we need to leave Monica alone. You then turn around and state your opinion as the one and only truth. You are doing the same as everyone else just to the other extreme. Now to itsallgood, you said no one has the right to be mean spirited because they have opinions other than others. Well when Monica walks up to a person on an oxygen tank and asks for a cigarette, that is EXACTLY what she is doing! That is one of the rudest, meanest things I have ever heard and I am very disappointed that that is what living in the bible belt gets you. Nothing but a bunch of holier than thou, selfish hypocrites. It makes my heart sad to see all of this. Maybe before we start judging others, we need to take a look at our own lives. He who lives in a glass rock should not throw stones!
