Ask the commissioner about uninsured drivers

“N.C. motorists pay more for uninsured” (letter, March 30) was right on the money. My uninsured-underinsured coverage also increased, as did the premium, from $88 to $154, and when I called to question this I was also told about the state law.

How do we get these un- and underinsureds, anyway? When we renew our vehicle license, as I did last week, we have to furnish proof of insurance. And in the case of an uninsured person driving someone else’s car, he or she is covered by that car owner’s insurance.

I think it’s a scam, and I suggest contacting the N.C. insurance commissioner, Wayne Goodwin, at 1201 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1201, or 800-546-5664, or www.ncdoi.com

You be wasting your time! I been screaming about illegals and no car insurance for years.
Most of the time, I got no response, once I was told, we can not keep up with them!
They pay enough on their insurance to get their tags, then they pay no more!
The key is to , not reissue their drivers permit.
When they have full backing by the liberal professors, and the liberal media, hard working Americas have no chance. So just suck it up and keep paying, the politicians in this state love illegals, they vote straight democrat.
Try prodding one of the liberal medias to do a story on this, I tried for years, no luck, maybe you could do better.

Dog,

While it is true one person's crusade is usually like a lone voice in a great wilderness, collectively people have almost limitless power. Rather than continuing to rant in this venue, do something constructive and start a formal protest process. Gather together a whole bunch of "ones" to farther your agenda. People usually are more effective if they start locally to organize, then take their case to a state level. Just remember, for good or bad, any change generally starts with one person who feels passionately enough about an issue to take that first step.

As to the letter, Mae is right. We need to overhaul our antiquated insurance laws. Right off the bat, $30,000 minimum for liability coverage is a ridiculously small amount of money when you are talking about anything more than a minor bump up. All drivers should be required to carry at least $75,000 liability in order to get tags. Don't wait until one of these $30,000 people hits you to worry yourself with the fine details.

Secondly, NC should combine un and under-insured policies to lessen the confusion, like almost every other state. In the little booklet they send you with your policy, it clearly says "uninsured/under-insured", suggesting they are one and the same. In NC, THEY ARE NOT. They are two separate policies. Don't assume anything. If your agent does not mention it to you, report them as it is illegal for them not to tell you.

Safe driver discounts really should be discounts. When a driver is hit by someone else, through no fault of their own, they should not automatically be considered a "higher risk". My insurance rate went up when I was hit head-on by a drunk driver. I was simply in the right place at the wrong time. Why should I, or any other safe driver, be penalized for some clod who thinks it is OK to speed, drive drunk, drive without a license, drive reckless, drive while eating, on the cell phone, texting or for inexperience?

Mae is right in that we should bombard the insurance commissioner with emails and/or phone calls.

Mae, does it involve an insurance company and the government? Then you can be sure it's a scam.

Maybe we pay our insurance when we pick up our tags ...

You tend to lose me when you do your "liberal professors / liberal media" rants, Dog Breath.

Do the illegals vote straight democrat? In most places they are not allowed to vote -
