I’m willing to pay more in taxes to save jobs

County Commissioners Skip Alston and Steve Arnold are determined to have a budget with no tax increase. However, the only avenue open to them is to lay off county workers.

After years of job cuts, there is little fat left, and so the 75 jobs eliminated means a loss of service. Worse, these jobs are held by neighbors who will be tossed out into a recession with no paychecks.

A county resident who owns a $200,000 house will be spared about $50 in tax. Some people are truly hurting now, and a $50 increase would be a hardship.

The county should find a way to lessen their burden. But my guess is that most of us will not unduly suffer from such an increase. The exception is those 75 neighbors who will lose their jobs.

I would gladly pay $50 more to save the jobs of 75 people. After all, we in the Guilford County community are in this together, and our understanding of community is neighbors helping neighbors. We can do little to stop corporate layoffs, but we can help to save the jobs of our neighbors in county government.

Let the county commissioners know that you are willing to do your part to save these jobs.

Jack Jezorek

Looks as if Jack finds it easy to spend money someone else has earned, money that is not his.

the reason they were laid off was that the previous receipts were squandered. giving government more money to squander will not change the nature of the bureaucrats making the decisions. if you're feeling so generous, give it directly to the people hired during the boom cycle of the Fed's injection effect efforts to centrally plan an economy. they will be the ones thrown under the bus during the bust cycle, along with every other wage earner and investor who went long on the boom cycle. i'm in the duet with neocon...nay baby nay, nay and toss the big ass Fed

If paying taxes saved jobs, we would keep 100% employment. If government could create and maintain employment, why haven't they. Taxes take money from the people who create jobs. A job that appears to have been created by government has only created more government. Money that stays in the hands of people who earned it creates demand for more products and services and creates a shortage of labor which drives wages up. Eliminating taxes will increase earnings more than wrestling with your employer for a raise.

I want to jab a sharp flaming stick in my one good eye when i read posts by publicly schooled economists.

also...50 Bush/Obama dollars for 75 jobs puts less than 67 cents into the lint-filled pockets of those who were laid off. I wonder if the nouveau jobless would accept money from a sit-in museum fund, Roy Carrol tax break or FedEx incentives to fill their children's stomachs.

Gosh chucka, what the helll is wrong with you? Do you beat your wife and chidren too?

Nothing is wrong with chucka -- he just recognizes that government is not God and cannot do everything for everybody. Why would you think he harms wife and children? I believe he suggested the flaming pointy stick was for HIS OWN eye, not for others.

The problem with the LTE is the assumption that paying more taxes will save jobs. His argument is:
1. Paying more taxes saves jobs.
2. Saving jobs is a good thing.
therefore: paying more taxes is a good thing.

While this is a valid argument in formal logic (in that the conclusion follows from the premises), material logic demands that we consider whether or not the premises are true. I dispute the claim that paying more taxes will necessarily save jobs, therefore I reject his argument.

As the professor in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe said, why don't they teach logic these days?

What bothers me about all the cost cutting is the lack of transparency. The closed door, "yeah I have the votes but I don't have to take a vote in a public meeting," speaks to "good 'ole boy" backdoor, smoke filled room politics at its worst.

If these people really needed to go, why couldn't the cuts been discussed in a public meeting?

You're absolutely right, Panacea.

Jack Jezorek is loved by politicians. He has fallen right into their tax and spend plan. He has said what ever tax and spend liberal politician enjoys hearing:
"my guess is that most of us will not unduly suffer from such an increase."
Music to the politician's ears. What's $50 here, $100 there. No one will notice $50 this year or another $50 next year.
Just how much taxes is too much? In my opinion my taxes are too high now. Companies all over this country have had to cut back and have lay offs. Why should local goverments like Guilford Co. be any different.

Great point beachwalker, what's another bit here or there, especially if it's for the children? A beloved sheeple adored by politicians is Mr. Jezorek.

How I wish taxes weren't conveniently withheld from paychecks and taxpayers had to hand write them each quarter.

My property taxes are conveniently paid by me, but via Wells Fargo each year. All I see is a statement but I never write the check. It doesn't seem like I pay the money, Wells Fargo does!! Trust me folks, it means more when you save the money and write the check.

Panacea [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Beachwalker, I agree that taxes of all stripes are too high.

What I don't like about what Alston and Arnold are doing is that they are acting like gods on high making decisions that are required by law to be transparent, they are coming up with all kinds of excuses why they are not, and so we don't really know if these cuts will produce savings to hold the line on taxes or not.

In the case of the County Attorney we are going to be spending MORE than if things had just been let be. Which makes me think the ouster had more to do with personalities than cost cutting. I suspect our late county attorney tried to tell Alston and Arnold they were breaking the law, and they fired her for it.

Beachwalker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Panacea, I like you do not trust Skip Alston. I think he always has alternative motives. He is as crooked as they come. Some have suggested Alston will replace many of these laid off employee with hand pick servants, who will be able to keep the Skipper in power for a long time to come. So please don't think I am a fan of Alston, I am just against high taxes.

Please teach me conservative logic. And why do I need logic oppose to emotions?
