Remove Leonard Pitts and add Walter Williams
What’s the chance of adding a regular column by Walter Williams, the black economist, and removing the tirelessly racist Leonard Pitts?
Consider poor Leonard’s March 25 column on hate, in which he tells us about the Southern Poverty Law Center report, which cites a 50 percent increase in hate groups since 2000.
Soooo, there oughta be more hate crime, right? Well, not exactly.
In the FBI Strategic Plan 2004-2009, under the sub-heading “Civil Rights Forecast,” it is reported that “most hate crime statistics have remained relatively constant,” the exception being an increase in crimes against Muslims and Arabs since 9/11.
Whom are we gonna believe here?
Let’s remember the SPLC is a group of self-appointed lefties whose business is hating other groups. They can call anyone a hater or racist because they are funded by leftist wing-nuts like themselves.
Indeed, the SPLC, like the NAACP (racist by the definition of its title, incidentally) and individuals like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and, of course, poor Leonard, are together a pack of scoundrels preying like hyenas on the carcass of racial division.
Walter Williams, on the other hand, writes about the human condition, transcending race. Please dump the racist.

Great letter Chuck, I fully agree - all too often Leonard appears to be little else than a black man complaining about being black. And if Walter Williams is too expensive for the N&R maybe Charles Davenport could step up the pace, his observations shed much light and offer much insight -

There is a perpetual group of victims in this country that need to see their racist views expressed in print over and over again. Pitts tells them their racism is justified and they are indeed victims.
It's supply and demand.
Walter Williams has left the plantation behind, thus he is of little use to those who still live in antebellum.

Charles Davenport's most recent op-ed reflected Pitts obsession with racism and also mentioned the SPLC:
"The organization's multimillion-dollar headquarters in Montgomery, Ala., is known to locals as "the Poverty Palace." The SPLC's assets exceed $150 million, but in a recent year, it reportedly spent 89 percent of its income on fundraising and administration. Its director, Morris Dees, pays himself a salary in excess of $280,000. Fortunately, authentic hate is not necessary to provide lavish facilities and salaries; the carefully crafted illusion of "hate" serves the purpose."

$280K?? Perpetuating unending victimhood of racism and hate can be very lucrative.

It appears that Chuck and Monica want only conservative, right-winged columnists spouting their agendas. If that is what they need to be "balanced", then let them read their faves online and leave the printed versions to carry a real balance. (Williams is so far right he is almost out of the ballpark altogether.)

In my opinion, Pitts is brilliantly eloquent and insightful. I, as a white man, have never felt threatened by his writings which, while often address issues of race, are never vitriolic. Further, for one to site Charles Davenport to make an argument regarding Pitts "bias" as Dan has done would be laughable if it weren't so pitiful. Pitts is articulate and thoughtful ... Davenport in contrast seems to be of limited intellect and reactionary
