Western North Carolina isn’t too far out of the way

I noted that Gov. Beverly Perdue chose not to attend the ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, citing travel costs.

While that’s commendable, I found it strange that the governor’s spokesperson said the ceremony was “too far out of the way.”

Does this mean that Gov. Perdue only intends to govern in places that are easy to get to?

The governor of Tennessee apparently didn’t find it “too far out of the way,” or perhaps he has a deeper appreciation of what a wonderful asset the park is.

Since Nag’s Head is way out there on the Outer Banks, when is that going to be considered too far out of the way?

not that it matters, but Nags Head is at least 100 miles and an hour and a half closer to Raleigh by car than the Great Smokey National Park and almost 2 days closer if traveling like Jesus.

Inconsequential pomp and circumstance. The Gov. gets a pass on this one.

Just another writer who has life so good he apparently is unconcerned with the real meaningful woes the rest of us face. How totally juvenile to have such a narrow base for complaints.

Kudos to Gov. Perdue for saving taxpayer money. Governors should travel on the taxpayer dime only when necessary for govt. business, this event was not.

Lets look at it from the Gov's point of view. Two choices, either take a helicopter or plane and be compared to former gov.Sleasely's travel excesses or take an 11-12 hour round trip limo ride. She did the right thing.

Maybe our Governor was waiting to see if a/the poohbah from D.C. would (yet again) hit the road and broadcast a message to THE PEOPLE from the Great Smokey Mountains NATIONAL Park.

Such a media-frenzy event in the "out-of-the-way" mountains probably would not rise to the "town meeting," but it might make it to the "cove meeting" level.

I'll bet the Governor of Tennessee welcomed the opportunity to attend the event. Just hope the Tennessee Governor didn't slip up and ask "Are we at Dollywood yet?"
