ACC Hall of Fame, pool don’t belong at coliseum

The city of Greensboro should not spend millions for an ACC Hall of Fame or an indoor swimming pool at the Greensboro Coliseum complex. Last summer the city’s outdoor pools could not operate full hours because of a shortage of money for lifeguards. Our children must come first.

On the same subject of our money-losing coliseum, I think we need a new director, and I’m sure a qualified person with a business background could be hired at half the pay of our present director.

It seems that our priorities have become backwards because of a lack of good leadership that borders on unethical, if not worse decision-making by our elected officials.

A better idea is for the city to get out of the coliseum business completely. Let the director put together a group of interested investors. Let them buy it and let the city unload this bottomless money pit.

The city dictators talk about how much tax the coliseum brings in, through hotel and resturant business. If the city were to sell to private investors the city would still benefit from the tax generated by hotels and resturants when events are held at the coliseum, but they would not have the expense of the Lee St. White Elephant. Ownership could change, but the benefits would not.

Little late to the party there guys/gals. The city has owned the CVM for 50+ years or so and the pool passed in the last bond. Move on.

Note: I wholeheartedly agree with holding off on many of the bond projects until a later date.

Idea: The pools that will be used for the next Olympic trials will be for sale. Richmond Va bought the last ones. Might be an idea worth pondering. Sounds odd doesnt it. But it works and is very do-able.

One more thing:

Why would someone buy a losing venture? You yourself say it loses moola. Here is a tip: That is exactly why many CVMs, Pools, etc are publically owned.

When all revenues are tallied I feel comfortable that the CVM works for our city.

Maybe it is a "losing venture" because it is a city owned facility. Matt Brown doesn't have to make a profit because he knows the coliseum is subsidized by tax payers. Private investors would run the coliseum like the business it should be and not like a tax subsidized money pit that it is.

Just imagine what kind of money could be made if they changed the coliseum to a Wal-Mart.
