For life’s sake, revive assault-weapons ban
Assault weapons like the AK-47, AR-15 and Uzi are a problem for public health and civil society. They can fire armor-piercing ammunition (endangering police officers) and they kill masses of people, including children in schools and people at work and in church. Currently, assault weapons smuggled from America inflame the Mexican drug wars.
Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton supported a ban, which was passed in 1994 and expired 10 years later. One thousand, one hundred police chiefs and sheriffs from around the nation called on Congress and President George W. Bush to renew and strengthen the ban. A majority of the American public agrees.
So what is the problem? Voters have allowed the National Rifle Association to hold our elected representatives hostage through threats (loss of votes) and bribes (campaign contributions).
Obviously, we cannot change the minds of the gun-fixated, but we can take a leadership role.
We can assure our representatives that we will support them with our votes and money if they support a renewed ban. And we can convince others that an assault-weapons ban will not violate the Second Amendment or infringe on reasonable gun ownership.
Not to do so is an example of social irresponsibility.

I agree up to the point, the NRA holds elected officials hostages. The NRA supports your rights.
Acron carries far more weight than the NRA, now who do they hold as hostages?
Acron wants to steal your rights.
They hate honest elections.
They are being investigated in 14 states for election fraud.
NC is not one of them, wonder what Roy Cooper is doing?

What evidence is there? I for one have never seen an Acorn Bumper Sticker.

"Not to do so is an example of social irresponsibility"
Failure to teach children firearms safety is social irresponsibility.

Agreed, Hugh. I like the Switzerland Model:
" .... 19 years of age for male compulsory military service; 18 years of age for voluntary male and female military service; the Swiss Constitution states that "every Swiss male is obliged to do military service"; every Swiss male has to serve at least 260 days in the armed forces; conscripts receive 18 weeks of mandatory training, followed by seven 3-week intermittent recalls for training during the next 10 years (2008)."
... and I heard there is an uzi in every house .. but we'll skip the fact that they are a federal republic with a highly centralized federal government.

"and I heard there is an uzi in every house "
Note to all people who live in fear of inanimate objects, DO NOT visit Switzerland!

Here we go, another uniformed and over reactionary letter about gun control....
1) "assault weapon" is a vague, non-technical term that is constantly abused out of fear or political agenda.
2) Full auto rifles such as the AK-47 are already banned from use except for military and law enforcement. They can be owned only if they are configured for semi-auto only.
3) Semi-auto pistols can also fire armor piercing ammunition. In fact, they can fire rounds that are heavier and produce more internal damage than the typical .223 round that an AR-15 fires.
4) Most mass shootings, like the VT tragedy, are committed with a basic semi-auto pistol. If production of semi-auto rifles is reduced or eliminated (which I guess the writer is trying to suggest) criminals will simply use another type of firearm.
5) Criminals will obtain any type of firearm that they want, so further gun control will only restrict law abiders from being able to defend themselves or their family. If criminals know for sure that they will be better armed than law abiders, gun crime will certainly rise.
6) If gun related charges would result in full or longer sentences, those people who typically cause the most havoc on our streets and communities would be safe behind bars. If people with mental health histories are weeded out in a more efficient manner, they would have a harder time obtaining or keeping their firearms. In either case, gun crime goes down while law abiders are not punished by politicians with an agenda that are backed by ignorant and over reactionary voters.

Why does this letter sound like a high school or college social studies assignment?
There is no evidence that the famous "assault weapons ban" saved even one life.

Fertilizer and gasoline should be banned first.

The real purpose and meaning behind the Second Amendment: the ability to protect ourselves from the tyranny of our own government.
It is true the so called "assault weapons" are generally not used for hunting. They are used for target shooting, protection and defense. That includes the protection and the defense from the tyranny of our own government. What would you suppose we use to do that, a sling shot or a BB gun?
This is a GREAT video. Dr. Susan Gratia knows what the 2nd amendment is really about.

Funny you should mention that. Ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) was banned after the first terrorist attack on the WTC.
Of course, anybody with a rudimentary understanding of chemistry knows that all you need to make something go boom, is an oxidizer and a combustible. Take away one freely available oxidizing agent, and folks will just use another in it's place.

But, the gun ethusiasts need assault rifles to put food on their tables and to protect their homes.
"That includes the protection and the defense from the tyranny of our own government." Isn't this the type of thinking that inspired McVeigh, Rudolph and Koresh? Just asking!

What type of thinking was it for the founding fathers to write the 2nd amendment in the first place?
"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- (Thomas Jefferson)
"The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country..." (James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434 [June 8, 1789])
"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for few public officials." (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426)
"What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." (Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, Dec. 20, 1787, in Papers of Jefferson, ed. Boyd et al.)
Any other questions?

"Currently, assault weapons smuggled from America inflame the Mexican drug wars."
This is a lie. A lie propagated by liberal politicians and their enablers in the lamestream media. A manufactured 'crisis' to keep useful idiots like Jean Gordon mewling about how much we need gun control.

At birth, every American should be issued:
1. A fully automatic rifle and 300,000 rounds of ammunition, renewable at age one,
2. A briefcase-sized nuclear bomb (fission, not fusion, and only one-per-citizen-per-lifetime, these are expensive) and
3. A three-feet-long assegai.

Yet another dumb letter by a person who fears guns and thinks everyone should also.
The letter is full of "facts" that are not facts, only intended to inflame other people who fear guns.

Sorry Bishop, but that is not correct. I saw a pallet load of 34-0-0 at a farm supply store in Reidsville just yesterday. There maybe a limit on how much one can purchase or purchasing in large amounts might require registering the purchase. I really don't know. But it is still available for purchase.

I think you have that wrong, conundrum; as President G. W. Bush once said, it is to "...put food on their families."
