Partisan political jokes should cut both ways

Recently, President Obama, speaking to a group of media people, commenting on why Dick Cheney was not at the gathering, said, “He’s writing a book on how to shoot his friends.” Funny stuff, I must admit, making light of when Vice President Cheney accidentally shot one of his friends while hunting. And most agreed it was funny. Hardly anyone said it was out of line.

So last year, suppose President Bush, speaking at a media function, had said about Ted Kennedy, “He’s writing a book on how to get drunk, drive a car into the water, leave a girl out there to die while managing to save himself.”

Since the mainstream media have the same standards for everyone, I have no doubt those remarks by President Bush would have been taken the same way as the clever quips by President Obama.

Add the comediennes jokes about 9/11 & Limbaugh being the 20th hijacker but was too high on oxycontin to make the flight, and wishing Limbaugh had kidney failure.

I one fell swoop she insulted 9/11 families, people working to overcome drug addiction, and people who suffer from renal failure. Obama sat there and laughed through it all.

When I'm reminded of Mary Jo Kopechne, I also think of other Democratic women such as Rielle Hunter, Monica Lewinsky, Donna Rice, Chandra Levy, & Lucy Mercer.

What, Dan? You mean Wanda Sykes was not PC and P.BO was complicit? Oh, the shame.

Plenty of Presidents make tasteless jokes themselves. P.BO just hears one and is to be criticized? I'm sure families of soldiers died in Iraq were really laughing when W. showed pictures of himself 'looking' for WMD's under tables and around the White House. They were at least as disconcerted as all the folks with renal failure must be about having Rush Limbaugh join their ranks.

Sawdust [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

It's all well and fine to make fun of Limbaugh or Bush, but no one had better poke fun at the Messiah, he does not take well to jokes at his expense. And there is such a treasure trove there!

conundrum [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

rahrah, excellent point about Pres. Bush joking about WMDs in his office. I am sure that the families of the five US soldiers who were recently killed by one of their own, can find some respite from their grief when they think about that joke.

Dan, put Sykes' joke about 9/11 in its true context. She was commenting on Limbaugh's hoping for failure for Obama. And how she viewed that as being treasonous. Objective people would see that she tried to correlate the hijackers destruction of the towers (America's destruction) with the destruction of America as wished by Limbaugh based on his dislike for Obama. And when you read the stories about the press event, the stories say that Obama winced when Sykes made those jokes.

Fred, don't forget the liberal cartoon of Bush calling Dr. Rice "Brown Sugar". Referring to the bamster like this will likely get you expelled from this blog.

Once again, the needle on my hypocrisy meter is jumping all over the place. So Pres Bush is allowed to make fun of Cheney shooting his friend, but Pres Obama isn't?

And Rep Foxx can deliberately misrepresent facts and people leap to her defense because of harsh treatement by the PC police, but if a comedian (not an elected official) says something inappropriate about an entertainer (also not an elected official), then Obama should be somehow blamed?

Am I the only one here who sees this inconsistency? Surely I'm not.

Howie G [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Surely Molene is alive and well on an Aryan Nation joke blog.

truth [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

You'll never see Obama get roasted. You can't make jokes at the expense of a black man.

I saw a blakc comedian the other night speaking to a black audience howling with laughter.

He said he didn't like hockey cause it was a bunch of white guys with sticks going after a little black puck.

He liked bowing where it was a big black ball knocking out a bunch of white pins.

Har har har, really funny, right.

However, let's say it was a white comedian addressing a white audience and he said he didn't like bowling but like hockey for the same reasons above.

He'd be banned from television, fired, sued, humilitated, maybe even jailed for hate speech.

There are Molene Gunch's on television and the news every day and they are celebrated and praised and paid big money for their wit. The difference is, they are black. They're called comedians, reverends, community organizers, and politicians.

Molene is accused of being a white-supremist Aryan Nation member.

Ahh, the hypocrisy.

No, that is not what the President said. The President said (I'm paraphrasing, but it's much closer than the above to what he actually said), "Dick Cheney couldn't be here tonight. He's writing his memoirs, titled 'How to Shoot Friends and Interrogate People.'"

I don't think stand-up comedy is in Mr. Pearlman's future.

Truth, were you watching TV Land? That joke's at least 25 years old.

Anyway, spare me the 'Woe is Molene' garbage. He/she chose to use language that was inappropriate for this forum, and has paid the price. That level of discourse had no business in these (mostly) civilized discussions.

No, it wasn't TV land. It was current. Guy tried to pass it as his own material. Pretty lame, huh?

But the audience ate it up.

My point is still valid. There's a double standard when it comes to humor. Personally, I find most black entertainers pretty damn funny when they make fun of white people or at the expense of white people. However, those same generalizations directed at black folks aren't tolerated.

I'm not worried about Molene. He/she will be back with a different name/IP address despite the N&R censor. I never said Molene was right--just that there is a serious double standard.

I'm guessing the inappropriate language you are referring to is the use of the word that starts with n and ends in r and has an igge in the middle.

Words, in themselves, don't much bother me like they do some. I've seen a lot more animosity, hatred, and ugliness displayed using the nicest words imaginable in my lifetime. Those are the folks you really have to worry about.

Truth,

The "howling with laughter" thing threw me. I can't believe anyone would still be laughing that much at such old material.

Anyway, to your point. Yes there is a double standard. Is it right or wrong? I don't know. But in the grand scheme of things, what difference does it make? So you can't make fun of black people -- so what?

I wasn't referring to the post that probably got Molene bounced, but rather to the pattern that I saw almost every time he/she posted. The last one was probably a last straw for people who complained. I used to post on here a lot -- for years in fact. Then I left the country for a while. Once Obama was inaugurated, I came home (just kidding). But I've noticed since my return to this blog that there is more overt racism than there was just six or eight months ago. Molene was a symptom of that, but not the only one. It's a little bit troubling to me, but I don't know if it's just the people on here, or a sign of the times. We'll have to see.

That's my $.02. BTW, I have no doubt Molene will resurface. I have a hunch he/she was already a reincarnation of someone else whose name I don't see any more.

Barbati [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I always get a kick out of the "little messiah" bit b/c it reminds me of an acquaintance who refers to Limbaugh as "the antichrist." Yes, both references are fatuous. But hey, today's Friday and I'm easily amused.

truth [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Howie G,

"Once Obama was inaugurated, I came home (just kidding)."

Now that was funny!

I agree with what you're saying about overt racism. I have experienced the same thing myself. I've heard one dumb racist comment after another since Obama was elected. There is definitely an angry white element out there, no doubt. And a vengeful black populace as well.

On the flip side, I'm about to puke about all the First African American to do this and that and the free pass he gets on certain issues just because of his skin color. He's less black than I am.

There is a racial divide in this country and I can't fault Obama or Bush for that one. It's generations old and who knows what the fix is for that? Maybe stop playing the blame game and just be responsible for one's own success/failure?

So far, I'd say that Obama has been nothing but a miserable failure. He's done nothing to address Iran, Korea, the swine flu. He's waffled on Gitmo, detaining terrorist, Iraq and Afghanistan. His plans to bail us out of the recession are ludicrous and he's driving the deficit up even past anything Bush had hoped for. How he continues to enjoy favorable ratings baffles me.

How we got 2 miserable failure presidents in a row is even more baffling. Or should I say 4? The most recent I've seen with an original idea and purpose was Reagan. He wasn't perfect but he was more than the 4 that have come after. These last two take the cake. Inexperienced do-nothings who screw up everything they touch.

I'm just hoping that there is someone (democrat, republican, whatever) out there who can help lead the way to clean up this mess.

I wonder if there is any Cheney apologist out there who understands the joke Obama made about Cheney's non-attendance at the White House Correspondant's dinner. The humor in Obama's "How to Shoot Friends and Interrogate People" comment is in the title of Dale Carnegie's book "How to Win Friends and Influence People". Indeed, it becomes even more witty when people think about Cheney's qualities (or lack thereof) as a personable public figure. With a 13% approval rating, he obviously hasn't made many friends, nor has he influenced anyone.

left-wing conspiracy theorist [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

As for Molene Gunch, he is nothing more than a cowardly piece of crap. Those of you who are Gunch apologists, like the one who described the editor who banned Munch as being "thin-skinned", aren't much higher on the evolutionary scale. I know this observation won't affect you, though, as you probably don't even believe in evolution.

I would very much like to debate issues honestly with someone who is capable of engaging in civil discourse. I am still waiting for a conservative on this blog who is willing (able?) to do this.

Howie G [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

truth,
I'll conclude with two points that probably won't surprise you.
1) I'm not nearly as fond of Pres Reagan as you.
2) I'm not ready to declare Obama an abject failure after four months. The bar for success seems to be awfully high from a group of folks who waited almost eight years to say the first tough criticism about the worst president in history. (Yet another hypocritical double standard.) So I'm going to let this play out for a while before I levy a sweeping judgement. Has he done things I disagree with? Absolutely. Has he done things I agree with? Yes. So we'll have to see where this goes. Have a good weekend.

Tony Ledford [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

" Has he done things I agree with? Yes."

That may be, Howie G, but Obama can't have done anything right.

How do I know this, like so many of our dear friends on the N&R blogs?

1. He is a Democrat.
2. He is black.
