Sen. Specter was merely looking out for himself
Wow! I have recently moved to the Greensboro area from South Carolina and see that the News & Record appears to be a liberally slanted paper like the one at my previous home.
A character in the editorial cartoon on April 30 asks, after being told Sen. Arlen Specter has switched parties: “He’s a conservative now?”
This is a less-than-accurate statement, meant to make the conservatives among us look bad. Specter said in March, in a recorded interview, that he would not switch parties because the United States needed political balance.
But after political polls showed he had little chance of being re-elected because of his support of the controversial stimulus bill, he decided to change parties to save his job by hoping for greater support as a Democrat.
Truth is, the Republican Party no longer values him as a member, and Specter was really all about himself than what was good for the United States and its two-party system.

Mr. Sample-
I think you might have missed the point. The cartoon did not mean "to make the conservatives among us look bad." It was a commentary on Specter's voting record and stance on certain issues, in which he has taken a more progressive position than the Republican party itself.

What is true is that Specter saw the poll numbers and decided to jump ship, he admitted that in his jumping ship statement.
You know this country has gone to hell when Al Franken becomes a major deciding factor in the balance of power of the U.S. Senate. What were you nut cases in MN thinking?

Good riddance Arlen Specter...let him embarrass the democrats for a while.
And take the rinos Olympia Snow and Susan Collins with you.

"Truth is, the Republican Party no longer values him as a member, and Specter was really all about himself than what was good for the United States and its two-party system."
Truth is, Republicans bring out this "two-party system" argument when they are not in power and they do not agree with the decisions that are being made. Specter wants to keep his seat and he does not want to expose himself to the logic of some Republican voter who will vote against him because of "his support of the controversial stimulus bill." The man has a 29 yr. record in the senate and people like Mr. Sample will focus on one issue. The stimulus bill wouldn't have been needed if Pres. Bush, the possessor of the Harvard MBA, and the four ex-CEOs that he had in his cabinet, had been prescient enough to realize what was happenining around them.
"And take the rinos Olympia Snow and Susan Collins with you." This is the sentiment that Stuart Rothenberg, a Republican political analyst, said that Specter was trying to distance himself from. Republicans are like petulant children who take their balls home when they don't get picked for teams. There's a reason that your power is limited to the South, and there's a reason that Obama was able to pass his stimulus bill (without much or any Republican support in the congress). The rest of the country realizes that the Republican Party is about as functional as a wisdom tooth or an appendix. It all boils down to one columnist's recent comment about Republicans mastering the art of saying "no" and having no solutions or agenda. A black Democratic presidential candidate won NC, Va and Fl for crying out loud! Do you guys realize how much ground you've lost?

No, THIS is the sentiment Specter was trying to distance himself from:

Don't let the door bang you in the ass on the way out, Arlen...and take those RINOs with you.

Neo-,
I hope the rest of the Republican Party thinks just like you do. If they do, pretty soon the entire Party can meet right here on this blog!

Fyi miktay, I don't care what the republican party thinks, or what you or anyone else thinks of me for that matter.
Hey Arlen, don't let the door bang you in your liberal ass on the way out and take the RINOs with you.

Following the logic of this and many post one would surmise that: There were no democrats to be found in Washington for the last eight years. Only after Jan. 20 '09 did they ride into town to save the day.
A reminder; After the two elections that Bush won, the pressing question posed was "what happened to the Democratic party and where is it going. This question will be asked again in the future.
America has changes in it's weather, politicans and underware regularly.

Specter is not a liberal or a conservative: just self interested like many Senators.
He will not be in office long, anyway and will cause problems for the Democrats like he did for the Republicans.
Ghost: spot on post.
A better question is what will our country do next? We are the ones in trouble, not the parties.

The Republican Party has never won trying to be more like the democRATs. They need to distinguish themselves from the democrats, who for the most part now are a bunch of left wing socialist. The Republican Party needs to once again be the conservative party and not be ashamed of it. To do that the rinos, like Specter and Snow, have to go. To quote Neo; don't let the door hit you in the a--.

conundrum, mitay, panacea, et al. "enlightened posters:" I suggest that we set aside at least one day a week and not post on this blog at all! This arrangement will allow the "unenlightened" right-wingnuts (beachwalker, dan, ghost, gunch, neocon, sawdust, et al. dummies) to "chatter just among themselves," reinforcing again and again, ad nauseum, each others' lunatic comments! And I believe their display of posts would provide exceptional comical entertainment for the rest of us! How about Wednesdays, beginning May 6?

"I suggest that we set aside at least one day a week and not post on this blog at all!"
Great idea truman, we'll look forward to not seeing you on the blog on Wednesdays!!
Most of the "enlightened" posters are capable of having a discussion without personal insults and other troll like behavior.

Is it Wednesday yet?

gosh truman, don't boycott the blog. I'd be lost without the drool and my daily dose of self esteem building insults provided by the lefties.
Hey Arlen, DLTDHYITAOTWO.
And take those two RINOs I mentioned with you.
