Whose pool is it?
Regarding the story, “Coliseum site for aquatics stirs up waves” (May 22): In response to Councilman Mike Barber’s statement, “This is not a community neighborhood pool. The primary purpose of this is for economic development,” I would like to encourage him to read the mission statement of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. It states that part of the department’s mission is to “provide ... recreational facilities and programs for the citizens of Greensboro.”
Mr. Barber, if this is not a “neighborhood pool,” as you say, then why should the citizens of Greensboro be expected to finance it with $12 million of their money?

Excellent question, Gerald. I would love to hear Barber's answer and justification for using taxpayer money for private enterprise.

Not saying either of you are wrong but I can't exactly go shoot hoops on the coliseum basketball court any time I want, either.

I hope it is constructed as a top notch competitive pool BUT is used by the community for health, safety, free swim, programs, etc. It doesnt work very well the other way around.
As truth noted above there are numerous limitations on public use of public facilities. Carolyn Allen Field, Bryan Park, CVM, War Memorial, yada blah yada.
Charlotte does a good job of running The Mecklenberg Aquatic Center with differing uses.
What we need now is Corporate sponsors to get on board and help pay for operating expenses, upgrades, etc. How about some help there Greensboro Sports Commission ???
