Will Winn-Dixie customers save $ at Harris Teeter?

If you currently shop at one of the 13 Winn-Dixies in the Triad, it won't be long before you have to choose Harris Teeter or another store to buy groceries.

That's because Winn-Dixie recently announced plans to close 326 stores throughout the South, including all of its North Carolina locations.

Harris Teeter made bids on four Winn Dixies in the Triad: 265 Eastchester Drive in High Point; 5322 Liberty Road and 1605 New Garden Road, both in Greensboro; and 2727 S. Church St. in Burlington.

So if you want to continue grocery shopping at those locations because it's close to home, will you be spending more or less if it becomes a Harris Teeter?

Let's look at a few of the current sales - stuff you'll need for the grill and the cooler for July 4th weekend - and see:

Sodas

Harris Teeter beats Winn-Dixie but on different brands, so it's apples and oranges unless you enjoy Coke just as much as you enjoy Pepsi:

Two 12-packs of Pepsi products are $6 at Winn-Dixie.

Harris Teeter has four 12-packs of Coke products for $10, so you'd save $2.

Corn

Winn-Dixie has eight ears for $2. Harris Teeter has four for $1, so it's a tie.

Beer

Harris Teeter has Bud Light, Miller Lite and Coors Light on sale for $11.87 a case.

Winn-Dixie has 12-packs of Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft bottles for $7.99, so you'd save about $4 buying brews at Harris Teeter unless you just can't drink out of a can.

Hamburger

Depends on whether you prefer ground round or ground chuck.

Winn-Dixie has ground chuck patties for $2.49 a pound.

Harris Teeter has ground round patties for $3.69 a pound.

Ground chuck has more fat, but that isn't a bad thing when it comes to burgers.

Turns out it's the preferred meat for burgers, according to the Food Network, because it contains enough fat (15 to 20 percent) to give it flavor and make it juicy.

The leanest (around 11 percent fat) and most expensive of the ground meats are ground round and ground sirloin.
