When a deal hits your eye like a big pizza pie

Pizza delivery rivals Domino's and Papa John's are offering pretty good deals on pies these days.

It's Tuesday, so you can take advantage of a buy one large pizza at Domino's, get the second one for free deal.

Or get three mediums for $15 any day of the week.

Papa John's is serving up a deal on toppings. Buy a large for $10.99 and get up to five toppings for free (a large with one topping normally comes to $12.07).

Have to admit that's quite the deal.

What bothers me is that the last two times I ordered from Papa John's (which I prefer) there was a dollar ($1) delivery fee on each pizza.

I don't think I've ever had to pay for delivery in my life. I always tip the driver's well, as I know how important a good tip can be...but I guess some don't share my view, which must be the trouble behind the new policy.

Very strange.

I did an informal office poll this morning. No one recalls paying a delivery fee.

Is this the one on Spring Garden Street? I'll call and find out why because I'm curious too.

I did a quick Google search after my boss recalled hearing some scuttlebutt in the news about how some pizza deliverers were tacking on a fee because of rising gas prices.

That turned up a few stories, including one
that ran last year in the Arizona Daily Star ("Gas pains spreading to deliveries, services"). (http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/relatedarticles/22593.php )(no reg. required).

Turns out the top three pizza chains including Papa John's had also been plotting at least since 2002 assessing delivery charges but not at all of the stores, according to a pizza industry trade article.
